I'll talk about ethnic groups in southern Nigeria; do not have much to say about the ethnic groups in northern Nigeria because my knowledge about the various ethnic groups in that part of the country is limited.

As somebody who is intimately familiar with most of the ethnic groups in southern Nigeria, the most friendly ethnic groups are from the so-called minority groups:
1. Edo (Esan, Bini)
2. Efik
3. Urhobo
4. Ibibio
5. Kalabari
etc.

The so-called major ethnic groups (Igbo and Yoruba) seem to be in a perpetual state of competition, which gets in the way of hospitality, friendliness and genuine kindness. They are generally less friendly than the so-called minority groups.

In all honesty, I think that friendliness is not a realistic element in the possible set of attributes of any given ethnic group. Friendliness should be considered an individual trait and not an ethnic parameter. Be that as it may, many people deal with the complexity of social identity by grouping people, traits, attitudes and behaviors in poorly defined compartments. The challenges are to always allow for a good degree of flexibility in such groupings and to know when to outrightly discard such ill-defined compartments.

The owner of this forum, Seun Osewa, is a yoruba guy and he lets Yoruba haters have a free reign here.

If this forum was owned by someone from another Nigerian tribe, they would have censored anything bad said about their
tribe.

Obasanjo, a yoruba man, despite his many short comings, had the most all inclusive set of ministers in Nigerian history.

soludo, akunyili, okonjo-iweala, el-rufai, ribadu, ezekwesili, Paul dike (first igbo service chief since the end of the civil war)
Ernest Ndukwe, Liyel imoke etc were many of the top shots of OBJ's administration that were not yorubas.

You can easily see the difference now with a Northerner in power.

Yoruba people's ability to accept others is largely responsible for the success of Nairaland and the city of Lagos.

I believe yorubas rank extremely high when it comes to tolerating others (I'm not saying they are perfect, but
in the Nigerian context, they rank extremely high)
Re: Which Is The Most Friendly Tribe In Nigeria? by Abagworo(m): 9:24am On Nov 18, 2008
One cannot easily conclude the perculiarity of certain traits to certain tribes. The Yorubas(If Lagos groups are considered Yoruba ) must be commended for hosting the highest no of non indigenes in Nigeria.Yorubas are however not liberal. They are too cultural just like Bini. They rever their Obas above their fellow humans. The Igbos and their brothers are so liberal that you can hardly ascribe a particular way of life to them.In Igbo all humans are equal and anyone can lead depending on ones level of success. It must however be noted that urbanisation causes hostility,so one might not conclude for an entire ethnicity based on the hostility of an urban community. This is the case of Port Harcourt. If you visit Igwrita just 10km from PH,you wiill notice difference in stranger acceptance. We cannot therefore conclude that all Ikwerres are hostile.

I don't think so. Nairaland is a business. Controversial topics attract a lot of people. More people, more popularity. Any right thinking businessman from any tribe would let go of his biases for a forum like this to thrive.

This example will not count because it is the number of hits a site get that determines the marketability. If Seun takes side here, believe me this site will be dead in one month and his business will go up in flames.

What do you know about Nok and Igbo-ukwu. Please explain that to me because the last time I read about those two culture they was no friendly attribute attach to these two culture.
@ D house
Yoruba is not the friendliest tribe. We can really say here the most friendly tribe because Nigeria is made up of many tribe I think 250 tribe and on what hypothesis that Yoruba are the most friendliest tribe.

Yoruba seems to be the warmest, peaceful and most accepting tribe in Nigeria. How did I determine this:

1) Other tribes that live in Yoruba land do not experience any form of harassment or whatnot.

2) Least or no crime against another person that is not a native.

3) Inter tribal marriage is very high

4) Yoruba can stick their neck out because they want to protect a visitor at the expense of their own people.

5) Yorubas are more liberal than any other tribe in Nigeria

6) Because I think I am correct .

If I am wrong, please do correct me and tell me the warmest and most welcoming tribe in Nigeria.

Which tribe in Nigeria should be the most aggressive with respect to the factors above?

The friendliest tribes are actually in northern Nigeria in my opinion (not Hausas, not Fulanis)

Deepzone, I'm sure you already know thatĀ  Yorubas are very tribalistic, generally speaking so your assertion is wrong.
And it's a no brainer that generally Igbos and Yorubas don't like each other.
An Igbo man would kick against his daughter or son marrying a Yoruba man or woman and a Yoruba man would also not want his kids to marry anĀ  Igbo man or woman.
The various threads on this forum of people asking for advice on spousal issues related to ethnicity prove me right.
Re: Which Is The Most Friendly Tribe In Nigeria? by okunoba(m): 7:41am On Nov 26, 2008
yoruba`s are accommodating but I won`t go as far as saying they are the most friendly ethnic group in Nigeria. example, u find in yoruba families muslim and christains gettng married and no one is forced to convert.

The crux of the problem is competition. It seems Yorubas and igbos are the only two ethnic groups competing with each other and closest rivals. The hausas get a free pass because they are not threatening to either igbo or yoruba when it comes to business,IT, education, entertainment etc. So the rivalry is buried in competition.

yorubas
just look at lagos the most diverse city in Nigeria
Re: Which Is The Most Friendly Tribe In Nigeria? by londoner: 10:26pm On Feb 20, 2009
The only reason why Lagos is so diverse, is because it was the capital city. It has nothing to do with friendliness, if it were, Lagos would in turn be the "friendliest" city in Nigeria, its not.

I think all tribes to some extent harbour ill feelings towards other tribes, or even those within the tribe, from different areas. Its an individual thing as to friendliness. There are some tribes who have become insular because of their experience within Nigeria as a country, I would not call that unfriendliness, but distrust. It also goes both ways.
