Its a yoruba proverb

A ki du ori olori ki awodi gbe teni lo

Transliteration: One does not strife to save the head of another, only to have a hawk cart one's own away

Meaning: One should not pursue the cause of others at the expense of one's own priorities e.g.  one should not save others at the expense of one's safety

Words:
A = we, one
ki = does not , do not, not
du = strife, compete, struggle
ori = head
olori = (in this context) He who owns the head i.e. another; more commonly used to mean a leader
awodi = hawk
gbe= carry
teni (shortened from ti eni) = one's own
lo = away

ete depending on the intonation and/or yoruba spelling could mean any of tongue, cunningness/slyness, or disgrace

lapalapa refers to eczema or the Jatropa species plant used to treat such skin infections as ringworm and eczema

Slight typo in my initial post:
lapalapa refers to eczema and not ringworm, while the plant is used to treat both. Ringworm is called eela

Hi, It's actually the other way round. Lapalapa is Ringworm and Eczema is probably Eela but most likely Ifo. grin

I initially thot lapalapa was ring worm, and then on second thot felt I had mixed them up.

Thinking about it a bit more, lapalapa is ringworm like I said initially. Eela should be eczema that often causes irritation, itching, redness and possible ulcer of the skin. It is definitely not ifo, whose primary symptom is the lightening of the infected skin area. Ifo is more likely tinea versicolor

It's a greeting. Usage is similar to how Americans say "hey" when they greet each other.

Re: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by ChinenyeN(m): 9:38pm On Mar 02, 2010
Someone just asked me that same question a few minutes ago. . .
Anyway, this was my response: "never heard it before, but if I'm reading it correctly, then I would guess maybe "pure/chaste woman" (woman of high moral etiquette/standards). That would be my guess."

Don't quote me on it though.
