Nairaland AutoMechanics,

I greet you specially.

I had an accident with my 2002 Toyota Camry V6 November last year. The car skidded off the road into a bush and the exhaust got extensively damaged with grass and leaves tucked into it. Catalytic converter, exhaust pot were replaced and some welding work was done.

Since then, fuel consumption has gone over the roof and scanning has revealed p1135 (A/F Sensor Circuit Heater Malfunction Bank 1 Sensor 1) and p1155 (A/F Sensor Circuit Heater Malfunction Bank 2 Sensor 1) error codes.

I do not believe the A/F sensors have gone bad cos it's unlikely for the two A/F sensors at different locations to go bad at the same time. Also, the same p1135 and p1155 codes were present when I first got the car and you said I might need to change the sensors but the error codes disappeared after exhaust work and the sensors were not changed.

I've had 2 other panel beaters/mechanics examine the exhaust and test drive, and they all tell me, "Oga, your exhaust is fine. No let anyone take you chop". They say there's no popping sound when starting the car, no visible leaks and the exhaust is breathing fine.

However, the slight stalling I experience when accelerating (not all the time and not too often), the increased grunt, decreased power & acceleration and the now excessive fuel consumption make me believe all is not well with my car. (Car did not have these issues before the accident).

I don tire, and I wan park the car as the fuel consumption don dey dig hole for my pocket. I'll be glad if I can be pointed in the right direction to get the problem fixed once & for all.

NB: I am in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Are those the only codes obtained?

Are the Air-fuel sensors connected and have their wiring intact?

Do your fans come on automatically or run all the time?

Know if the engine still has the thermostat installed?

YES, p1135 and p1155 are the only codes.

Engine has thermostat installed and the fans do not come on automatically. Fan only comes on 5 - 10mins after the temperature gauge reaches midway point.

The A/F sensors are connected and seem to have their wiring intact.

Your ride wasn't installed with a catalytic converter. Drop exhaust. Check silencer which is an intergral part within the exhaust. Am suspecting yours has been compromised with a wire guaze or foam grin. Hurry before you kill your engine
