Scriptures That You Must Meditate On While Fasting by victor44843(m): 6:04am On Sep 06, 2017

Fasting is a crucial Spiritual activity that every Christian must do! Some great men of faith such as Moses, Elijah, Daniel, Paul and Jesus Himself fasted so that they might draw closer to God ( Exodus 34:28 ; 1 Kings 19:8 ; Daniel 9:3 ; Daniel 10:2-3 ; 2 Corinthians 11:27 ; Matthew 4:2 ).

There are some important Scriptures we really need to meditate on while fasting that will help us during the exercise, these Scriptures will surely guide you and give you instructions on what to do and what you should not to while fasting.

God bless you as you read:

1. Matthew 6:16-18

16 "And when you fast, do not put on a sad face as the hypocrites do. They neglect their appearance so that everyone will see that they are fasting. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. 17 When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair, 18 so that others cannot know that you are fasting - only your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you. - GNB

This particular bible verse is just an important instruction to all Christians that are fasting, Jesus Christ told us to fast in secret and not for show. If we fast to be seen by men, you have already received your reward and don't expect any other reward from God. Isn't that what you want? To be seen and praised by men? Just because you fasted?

You need to carefully read verse 17 and 18 that says " When you go without food, wash your face and comb your hair, so that others cannot know that you are fasting - only your Father, who is unseen, will know. And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you" , why not fast secretly? and let God reward you openly someday.

Do you even noticed that Jesus said "....When you fast...." he didn't say "...if you fast...", which means that fasting should be done at least occasionally.

2. 1st Kings 21:27-29

27 When Elijah finished speaking, Ahab tore his clothes, took them off, and put on sackcloth. He refused food[fasted], slept in the sackcloth, and went about gloomy and depressed. 28 The Lord said to the prophet Elijah, 29 "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Since he has done this, I will not bring disaster on him during his lifetime; it will be during his son's lifetime that I will bring disaster on Ahab's family." - GNB

God answered Ahab's prayer not only because he fasted, but mainly because he humbled himself before the Lord. When you fast, always humble yourself before God and man and God will reward you bountifully, James 4:6 says ".....God resists the proud, but gives more grace to the humble." It is very obvious that God dislike proud people, God was so pleased with king Ahab that he made some promises to him.

Once again, if you claim to fast but you are full of pride, then it would have been better if you didn't fast at all than to suffer yourself with a hunger strike!!

3. Isaiah 58:3-9

3 The people ask, "Why should we fast if the Lord never notices? Why should we go without food if he pays no attention?" The Lord says to them, "The truth is that at the same time you fast, you pursue your own interests and oppress your workers. 4
Your fasting makes you violent, and you quarrel and fight. Do you think this kind of fasting will make me listen to your prayers?
5 When you fast, you make yourselves suffer; you bow your heads low like a blade of grass and spread out sackcloth and ashes to lie on. Is that what you call fasting? Do you think I will be pleased with that? 6 "The kind of fasting I want is this: Remove the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice, and let the oppressed go free. 7 Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives. 8 "Then my favor will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wounds will be quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; my presence will protect you on every side. 9 When you pray, I will answer you. When you call to me, I will respond. "If you put an end to oppression, to every gesture of contempt, and to every evil word; - GNB

It's not that God never notices those people when they were fasting, but God doesn't answer their prayers. You know why? Let's check God's reply to them "The truth is that at the same time you fast, you pursue your own interests and oppress your workers. 4
Your fasting makes you violent, and you quarrel and fight. Do you think this kind of fasting will make me listen to your prayers?
Now let's check verse 5 where God says " When you fast, you make yourselves suffer; you bow your heads low like a blade of grass and spread out sackcloth and ashes to lie on. Is that what you call fasting? "
Obviously those people want everyone to notice them when they are fasting, they lie on sackcloth and ashes as if they were mourning and they became violent.
As a merciful God, he gave them what they must do while fasting. He said " Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives.
These instructions doesn't apply to only the Israelites but also to all Christians. When you do these things, God said " my favor will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wounds will be quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; my presence will protect you on every side. 9 When you pray, I will answer you. When you call to me, I will respond. "

Amen.
