What are the advantages and disadvantages in a general setting.

General setting meaning nothing shady involved.

Culturally, does it matter?

I once wanted to. I still think of it.
It won't cost me a thing.
Reasons: I have always wanted separation from the linage which of course, I know absolutely nothing about my grandfather (paternal) nor of any generation before.
When I noticed some odds, some peculiarities, I began to believe that a change of name might just be the catalyst for a fresh physical and spiritual independence and separation from generational issues which are sometimes exposed during rigorous spiritual exercises like fasting and prayer or deliverance sessions.
I believe a change of name is significant and would trigger a spiritual separation from the family but I know the genes and traits would live on.

As a Christian, there have been revolutionary examples of people whose destiny was marked just because of the name they were given in the Bible. Others changed their name to express their transformation. Say Saul to Paul or Abram to Abraham.

I look forward to bearing a name that portrays the life I want for myself. Think of OluwaGbemileke (God lifts me) or OluwaDamilare (God bless me) as a new surname. I believe this is quite better than being tagged with a surname I barely know the meaning and the worst thing is passing that also via the male offspring to the next generation.

I also prefer the likes of my examples to general names like Joseph, Philips, May, Rice and all the English names modern Nigerians are adopting these days for surnames.

God guide us.

I plan on changing my name, my first and last names are Arabic names and I would like to change it to my native names.

I suddenly find it annoying when Nigerians bear foreign names especially if it's a last name, like a lot of Muslims bear Arabic first and last names and relegate their native name as the middle name and the irony here is that bearing Arabic names were never really a must for Muslims and a lot of Nigerian Muslims don't know this.

How do you think your family is going to react to it?
Are you still a Muslim?

I really don't know but my parents know of my intention of changing my name and they're okay with it so far it's related to the family. My dad isn't big on religion but I'm sure my mom will have a huge problem with it.

No.
