The article he’s citing is specifically about an Ijesa titleholder (it’s by JDY Peel), who was traditionally responsible for maintaining trade relationships with the Benin royal court. The implication of this is actually the opposite of what he’s trying to argue but I doubt that is quite clear to him yet. JDY Peel’s longer book (“Ijeshas and Nigerians”) is an excellent case study with more information.

But critically looking at it, Oduduwa seems like a legendary mythical figure like King Arthur of England & Merlin, Saint George slaying the dragon, Romulus & Remus breast-fed by a wolf founding ancient Rome about 2,700 years ago, etc.

The first Benin dynasty lasted longer than the current one. Since at least 355 BC. There were other previous rulers though maybe not a powerful single ruler but an elders' council. Their leader was still a quasi king/chieftain. At least 2,500 years old in all as an organised entity led by a central figure. Probably longer even.
