Most people will think ogboni and olokun worship originated from the yoruba people but they have thought wrongly the yorubas under the canopy of oduduwa wants to steal our identity
The screenshot below shows the narrative of of the benin chiefs descendants who leaved in igbaraOke oke presently at ondo state stating how olokun worship was foreign to the igbaraOke people

Yoruba owns ogboni. They merely brought it to u Benin. Nothing in what u posted from Benin net shows that for a fact that Benin owns ogbeni group.

In as much I understand the reason Edos may be jealous of their brother Yoruba. Although Edo is great but Yoruba is greater and elder is serving the younger as prophesied. But it is high time mods on this forum find something to do about this guy.@gregyboy is derailing the entire culture section with his wild claims. He is actually disturbing any reasonable discussion on any thread talking about Yoruba or he will create thread just to spite Yorubas and our ancestors. It is enough!

Was Ogboni traditionally an arm of goverment in Benin as it seems to have been in many southern Yoruba kingdoms?

I am not asking about the modern Reformed Ogboni which drew membership from ethnic groups besides the Yoruba. I am asking if Ogboni existed in pre-colonial Benin.

Documentary evidence will also be nice.

It is not, and the poster you’re referring to is unfortunately one of our under-educated young people. The article he’s citing is specifically about an Ijesa titleholder (it’s by JDY Peel), who was traditionally responsible for maintaining trade relationships with the Benin royal court. The implication of this is actually the opposite of what he’s trying to argue but I doubt that is quite clear to him yet. JDY Peel’s longer book (“Ijeshas and Nigerians”) is an excellent case study with more information.

The word ‘Ogboni’ itself is quite multifaceted. Anecdotally, it is used to mean ‘cousin’ or ‘relative’ in the Idaasha parts of modern-day Benin Republic, who are also sometimes thought to be connected to Ilesha and the complex of ‘Sha’-related ethnonyms in the Yoruba and Borgu-speaking areas.

Older than Ife. The second dynasty began in about 1170. This is the point Yoruba are claiming Oramiyan/Ododuwa founded the second dynasty. But critically looking at it, Oduduwa seems like a legendary mythical figure like King Arthur of England & Merlin, Saint George slaying the dragon, Romulus & Remus breast-fed by a wolf founding ancient Rome about 2,700 years ago, etc.

The first Benin dynasty lasted longer than the current one. Since at least 355 BC. There were other previous rulers though maybe not a powerful single ruler but an elders' council. Their leader was still a quasi king/chieftain. At least 2,500 years old in all as an organised entity led by a central figure. Probably longer even.

Will be nice if you can explain the part of the article that says "the first Ogboni is said to have come from Igbo Bini (Benin forest)"..
if you say the "igbo bini" is Ijesa, does it mean Ijesa was actually part of Benin Kingdom?

If I sama you e-slap with your moronic lying tongue!

No be only older than Ife. Na older than Egypt you for talk.

Where is the archaeological dating result?

You think every sane person buys into your nonsensical king list of Ogiso and pre-Ogiso jokes??

Bring archaeological results like that of Paul Ozanne or Robin Horton that have variously adduced archaeological evidence dating many settlements in the Ife bowl to at least 500BC.

Not your feel-good imaginations with which you Binis compensate desperately for your inferiority complex.

Nonsense and Oba Ovoranmwen.

There is not one single archaeological dating result for settlements in Benin Kingdom that comes even remotely close to Ife.

If you all stop lying, then I will stop exposing and ridiculing you.

But if you all won't stop, then I am bent on making the Nairaland community see how low you Binis will lie to compensate for your inferiority complexes.

Of course he's a cross dresser posing as a female. I used to think she's an intersex she-male. Even intersex learn good manners.

But by her replies, he is a very frustrated soul. You know those people who feel relevant when they can cause offence.

Feeling offended by their rants gives them satisfaction. Just ignore her.

What has become obvious is that sophisticated people do not have to make a song out of it. Manners show it.

You know in Edo culture bragging is not the norm. Saying I will beat, no try me o or such shakara.

Instead before you know it your head is rolling on the ground or if you are lucky slaps will have landed you on the floor.

It's about action. But these people shout, swear and make plenty of noise but very fearful and no action. grin

We keep complaining about their uncouth manners because it's strange to Edo people. But normal to them.

Hahahaha. Again, the history of the elders from which the first ogiso emerged is out there. Ashanti have said the golden stool didn't come from the sky yet outsiders still claim so.

King Bling Frederick and Ooni in their writings about Oduduwa still do not match. Olugbo even claims seniority to Ooni.
Your people here still claim chain from the hill, sky, Egypt, Israel. grin
