The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON, has banned the use of foreign models and voice-over artists on any advertisement targeted or exposed on the Nigerian advertising space, with effect from October 1, 2022. Voice-overs in British and American accents were once ubiquitous in Nigerian adverts, but not anymore.

A statement by ARCON released on August 22nd, explained that the ban was in line with the Federal Government's policy of developing local talent, inclusive economic growth and the need to take necessary steps and actions aimed at growing the Nigerian advertising industry.

The ban would cover all non-Nigerians and will put paid to the numbers of western actors who have appeared regularly on the country’s television adverts.

The statement, e-signed by the Director-General of ARCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo noted that the decision, was based on the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act No. 23 of 2022. He explained that the policy would not affect ongoing advertising campaigns, saying they would be permitted to run out their terms.

The move makes Nigeria the first country in the world to ban white models in advertising.

The statement, added: “All advertisements, advertising and marketing communications materials are to make use of only Nigerian model and voice-over artist.

“Ongoing campaigns are permitted to run out their terms, however, subsequent applications for revalidation for continued exposure of such materials will not be granted by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP)."

Even before the ban was announced brands had to pay 100,000-Naira (about $145) tariff for every foreign model used in an advert, making Nigeria one of the world’s most uncompromising environments on media representation. When the measure kicks off on October 1, the deterrence will become permanent.

Under the new law, organisations giving awards to corporations or individuals will now have to write to ARCON to establish the basis and process of arriving at the awards.

Is this the best way to solve the issue?

Why not add more requirements and increase the fees for ads with foreign artist, voice overs and contents?

That way, you encourage clients to go local, and also make more revenue if they insist on foreign names

A good way to increase patronage of local contents, it should spread to other areas too, so can employment rate can increase and the youths can be encouraged too.

We depend too much on foreign things, that we assume them as superior.

Some people will still criticize this when in actual fact this single move can create jobs for Nigerians or fatten the pockets of current indigenous practitioners

The last time I checked , the border closed for months only left a negative side on our economy. Today, a dollar is almost 700 Naira.

You banned importation of rice yet, no development of home grown rice. No youth agricultural empowerment programmes that could have ushered-in modern method of farming and growing of improved rice yields by importing improved rice paddies, construction of silos, etc. Mr president abandoned the alluvial soil in the south and asked the CBN to concentrate agricultural loan's and grants in the arid North.

This man, by the time he leaves office will remain the worst president Nigeria has produced in history.

Like I've always said, I'm waiting for what the APC will use to campaign. Incidentally, the National Leader of the same failed party is busy shouting oun lokan.

Like seriously some people are meant to wail till death even if u are trying to stop a car from hitting them

Imagine some people still find something to wail about with this news despite d fact that it’s to promote home grown talents

I don’t blame them cos I remembered when hope uzodinma banned alcohol sales at park to void drivers from over speeding n causing accidents, some miscreants wailed about it n said he was trying to kill business despite d fact that he was just trying to help them
