The Journey by Anonymous6o6: 2:34pm On Feb 24, 2023
I couldn't think of a unique name for this thread but I hope it serve its purpose.

I already have a thread in the diary section where I document about my journey as a developer but the essence of creating this one is because, there are times where I require the opinions or feedback of other devs, and I do receive mails with questions a little late, so think here as a safe space.

My diary -

So... About my stack
I'm a front-end developer and a software engineer. Initially wanted to go for backend but due to certain reasons, I realize I enjoyed frontend more. My plan is to do MERN but I will get there while working as a front-end dev - Money must be made to encourage progress.

I took quite some time creating my roadmap because that way I can stay focused without being in doubt if there's more. I will be dropping the link I used and my personal roadmap.

link: https: //www .linkedin . com/posts/satyajitsamal_frontend-developer-roadmap-activity-7007909333627736064-In23?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_android

PS: please ensure you close the spaces in your browser for the link to work

After browsing through, this is my personal roadmap:
- HTML
- CSS
- Tailwind CSS
- JavaScript
- DNS and hosting
- Git and GitHub
- CSS preprocessor - Sass
- React
- NextJs
- Typescript
- React Native
- Data structure and Algorithm
- Testing
- CI/CD

I also have projects I have listed down, some of which I'm current building and some, in the future. Regarding my roadmap, I did state it is my personal roadmap which means you can create yours depending on your research.

Least I forget, I also write in the form of documenting my project, the problems I encountered and also solutions. It honestly hasn't been easy considering the fact that I'm a law student but It hasn't been easy for anyone going into programming.

Current Progress
I'm currently learning react and building projects. It hasn't been long since I started learning React and the reason I had to rush it is because I was referred to a company for internship and the take-home project given to me requires I know React. Though they were understanding enough to give me time but I know if I take too long, It is good as gone.

The aim of this thread is to continue documenting my journey and connect with developers because replying people's mail late is not polite. I also recently created a YouTube channel but still setting it up. I intend to post projects I build there. There are many benefits of having a YouTube channel but the most important one is that it improves one's skill as a developer. This is because you can't record some half-ass video and post there. Making research helps the quality of the content.

That's enough for now, back to work. I'm currently in the Computer Science department watching tutorials and I have plans to do overnight but I'm still contemplating it because of tomorrow's election.

We can properly communicate here Tobedated and I will check out the Twitter clone, also check out the latest project I posted.

I created a habit for myself; irrespective of what I'm learning, I will always build projects daily. Either a new one or an unfinished one.

So today, aside the election that took place, I continued my react tutorial, built a landing page called Jobconnect with Tailwind css.

It is a website where users seeking for jobs sign up, update their profile and get recommendations based on their profile. I couldn't finish it because there was no power supply today.

I got the inspiration from a website I saw online, I loved the user design and decided to build something similar. Would drop the link when I'm done and hosted it.

So I intend to study React overnight (due to constantly spending the night in computer science department), I find it hard to sleep at night and even when I try, I end up waking up between an hour or two later.

I spoke with a colleague of mine today and we decided to build projects together, though individually.

We decided on three projects to show as our major projects:
- Google search bar
We will be collect google api from rapid api website and building it with React Js.
- Airbnb Clone
I already have the figma design so it will make it easier for us but there's a lot of work to do and I'm excited
- Recipe website
We're unsure of the template so we will be surfing YouTube for templates. I already built a recipe webpage and I'm still working on it though I made use of Html, css and JavaScript but I intend to use React Js for this one.

Aside that I have few unfinished projects that I appended because of React. I got lucky when I made friend with a UI/UX designer in the CS department, tho he is a already graduate. He provided me with some of his work, the figma design to work on.

I feel like I'm able to vibe more in a conversation when it is about programming and projects.

How I downloaded GTA v on my laptop but yet to play it because I feel like I'm wasting my time.
Alas... What a hassle.

Re: The Journey by Anonymous6o6: 2:53pm On Apr 22, 2023
It's been a while since I came to this platform. A lot has happened within that time so let's talk about it.

First of all, I landed a job!

So initially, someone referred me to a company where I was interviewed by them and was give a take-home project. Honestly, I wasn't too enthusiastic about doing the project because it was a Nigerian company and we know how many of these companies use devs without paying them all in the name of giving them experience.

Back then I had to learn React to build the project and I was still in the process of learning JavaScript! Long story cut short, I ignored the project and was focused on learning only to learn I could have been paid if I did intern with the company.

Eventually, I reach the stage of depression, I was flat broke and my dad barely take my calls. Well I don't blame him because we're as much as the loud house so he gets billed daily.

I was so broke that I couldn't buy pure water sometimes and had to drink from the compound tank. I was getting fed up of everything but I couldn't give up. I slept in the computer science department most times to save me the cost of going back and forth to my apartment because they always had Light and free WIFI but it was of no use.

I can't recall the exact day of the week it happened but then a collogue reached out to me and someone who needed a frontend dev for his project. I messaged the person but didn't get any response. Well, I didn't have high hopes of getting the job anyways but then I got a response from the client in the evening time.

We hopped on a call where we spoke about the project, the pay and deadline. After that, he suggested another meeting the following day to finalize our agreement before ending the call. That night I couldn't sleep.

I was so excited and grateful to God. I listed out things I would like to buy with the money e.g half bag of rice, beans, cream, slippers and many more. I had no food stuffs and the only old slippers I had, was very old and lifeless.

The following day, we spoke and he shared his screen to show me the dos and don't of the website. After which he sent half payment of the job. Omo when I saw the alert, I unconsciously screamed. I was very very happy.

Part of the money, I sent to my mom and siblings. They were all very happy and grateful.

That client also referred me to his collogue, so more work for me. I was very happy!

I don't intend to settle there tho, my plans is to pitch for jobs after this using the ones I have built. Through a guy's post named David, I realized, I don't have to wait for jobs to come to me. I will message companies with my projects, and skills. Only foreign companies tho

Nothing concern me and Nigerian companies.
Also, I'm currently learning React.

I didn't conclude that you are not normal, I was only asking you if you are normal or not so as for you to reply in simple answer with either yes or no. Rather, you took it personally as if I said that you are not normal which I didn't. Anyways, your response helped me with the right answer I needed.

You can visit any psychiatric/rehabilitation center close to you. By God's grace you'll get the needed help to solve your abnormalities problems/challenges as the case may be.

They are a couple of Youtubers I follow. Honestly, I don't hold a strong opinion for paid courses because you can get great courses on YouTube depending on who you follow. Here are the ones I follow:
- Code Evolution: His react courses are broken into short videos which makes it easier for you to follow. And he also covers Typescript and Redux but the course was recorded 4years ago and the playlist has over 100+ short videos.

- Netninja: Theirs is also a playlist consisting of 38 videos or so. But it was recorded 2 years ago.

- freecodecamp: There's this react course I downloaded. It is over 14hrs long but it was recorded few weeks ago so you can find all the latest update there. The course is being taught by John Smilga and it is very comprehensible.

Thanks for the response. It is nice hearing some of this guy's from you.

I have the full course of that Codevolution downloaded some months back, although I have not been using it at the moment.

On Netninja, the guy is super good for me, that's why I have been following his playlists. His CSS and CSStailwind and modern JavaScript courses really help me a lot. I wanted to start this React course last week, but it was unfortunate I could not create the react application with the normal way of using "create-react-app". I thinking react is moving away from that. Reason I picked his next.js which is a framework of react. I still discovered that some things have to been learned in that react. I tried to work on it yesterday but I couldn't create it. So how are you creating react app now that the create-react-app that is popular isn't working anymore.

Okay, I will check that of the Freecodecamp, I have been using Freecodecamp tutorials mostly taught by Dave Gray but I think this guy isn't simplifying things enough, although the guy is good, I am happy he's not the one that taught this latest one you are talking about. I'll check it out.

Thanks and Well-done Anonymous.

I suggest you use Vite to create react application, it is quite fast and simple. Let me explain the process:
- start by typing this on your terminal
npm create vite@latest
- press enter and it will show a pop up for the project name. You can either rename it or press enter to leave the default name.
- After which you will be given options to pick a framework, pick React and press enter
- Next, you will be required to pick a variant btw Typescript or JavaScript. Pick JavaScript and press enter
- Then you will be prompted to run three commands:
- cd project-name
- npm install
- npm run dev

This will run your app on the browser and you can start building your react application.

You'll get more confused if you use John Smilga running your React for the first time.

There is a short video on youtube of about 11 minutes you can watch to create your first React app. Also make sure you got Node.js installed before installing React. Very smooth trust me.

Use PedroTech or Arcade Mind to soften the ground before John Smilga. Though I'm learning with John Smilga now, the confusion I'm experiencing can easily be bypassed because the aforementioned helped me.

Don't bother about Vite for now to avoid confusion. Learn the (normal) basic - create-react-app.

Thanks.

First of all, create-react-app is quite outdated and no longer in use by meta.

Which means you can use it but will miss out on the latest updates on React.

Secondly, there is nothing too complex in Vite unless you decide to see it so. It is quite simple, straightforward and faster than create-react-app.

Thirdly, people's understanding differ. John Smilga's course may have been a little confusing to you but will be different for others.

I don't know what is confusing about a course where he literally explains things slowly and from scratch.

Dear Diary, Happy Sunday.

I miss being here. So you know how I got a gig through referral right? well, eventually the client also referred me to his friend. And also wanted to refer me to another but something came up. I also found out my client is staying in UK mehn... I was surprised cause I would have charged more if I knew.
Anyways I intend to make a good impression so our relationship last a long time and hopefully, he keeps bringing clients my way.

Aside that, I recently lost a writing gig. Well it's all my fault but let's talk about it.
So the person was looking for a Technical writer who has experience with API documentation. Someone who has written something similar to Paystack.

Well I had a Hashnode account but I only had one article there. Nothing special to help with their requirements and so that was it.

I was pumped up from losing that gig so I started writing again. I didn't just write for writing sake. But I set a goal, Today's Friday 5th of May and I intend to get a writing jobs before Next week runs out.

I recently wrote an article and surprising, I gained engagements and followers from it. My followers went from 2 to 9. Ya think that's easy? lol

MONDAY 8/05/2023
I have a Test this week and a deadline for the second Job. Mehn... I'm stressed out.
I also set a goal this week to get a writing gig so I will be documenting the steps I took and the final results.

My first goal is to publish one article per day. Well I know it's not going to be easy, especially with the fact that I have test and a project deadline but my resolve is not weak.

I was up since early morning and have been browsing through the interest on Technical Writing. Also read articles about developers who made it through Technical Writing and the steps they took.

I didn't do much on Monday because I had Test on Tuesday morning so I had to study. After the test, I went to the Law library to work and ended up doing overnight in school.

Lately, my articles views keeps increasing. I opened an account on dev platform and I already have 60 followers. While on Hashnode, I have 10.

I got a repository of companies to apply for writing jobs. I have written to few. I have articles I wanna write but my current job doesn't spare me the chance and my client keeps reminding me of the deadline.

Also, I haven't been able to save because I keep getting request from my family. I love helping them but that keeps me in the same situation as I was before - Broke and miserable. For the current job that I'm on, Almost half payment is already dedicated to my family due to promises and problems.

For my next job, I will be cautious. I still recall how I spent 80k in 4 days. Not just for personal use. Sigh

I have been sleeping in school lately because I'm trying to finish this job. My apartment has no Light - Well Solar is in my wishlist after getting a new apartment.

I have learnt a lot from building projects for my clients and I have to say, I'm really excited to learn more.

Taking my writing to the next level because.... Money must be made! Also I'm a good writer.

Check out my Hashnode account and give a feedback please.

I also apologize if I haven't responded to any person's mail here.

Good Morning Developers and Tech people.

I have a little gist. So I finished the two project applications I was building. Mehn... It felt really good getting paid. I learnt a valuable lesson before getting paid.

Well I was initially given half of the payment before I started but I was careless in my spendings so it finished real quick. I was honestly frustrated and had to borrow from others to survive.

Well after getting payment for completion of both projects, I paid my debts, bought a lot of food stuff. Before then I use to eat out (one of the source of my careless spending). I bought food stuffs, shared with my younger sis in school.

Since then I was managing myself but you know the truth, the money will eventually finish. And I was back to being broke!

I knew I can't depend on anyone but myself and God.

I also felt guilty because I couldn't be of much help to my family then. Well things worked out great for me by God's mercy.

I got a full-time job as a frontend developer, remotely. I also got accepted as a Technical writer for two foreign companies. Currently I have three jobs but with the way I'm currently accessing the situation, I will be getting more offers soon on Technical Writing.

Bosses in the house, my issue is that I'm still contemplating on the means to receive payment. I heard the official exchange rate is 460. Can someone please recommend a good payment method with that has a higher exchange rate? A colleague told me about grey but is there anyone using grey here please?

One of the companies I work for require I either use PayPal, Paystack, American bank or Stripe.
