Hi guys, it has been a while since I posted here. I have been busy focusing on my journey to become a better programmer. My focus is on the javascript ecosystem: Javascript, typescript, react, nextjs and nodejs: expressjs/nestjs. I have been working my ass off these pasts few weeks.

Last week my boyfriend decided to take a 'break' on our relationship cos he felt I am seeing someone else cos I don't call or visit or ask to go out as I previously used to. I tried explaining that coding is all I have been doing, but he didn't believe me.

It's not just my romantic relationship that is affected. Even my relationship with my friends and family is taking a hit. I rarely leave the house and i have taken a long break from social media. I don't even check my whatsapp status anymore. All I do is lock myself up in my house and code all day.

I am throwing an honest question to fellow programmers:

Is all my hardwork and sacrifice in vain?

Is my focus on the javascript ecosystem; both front and back end a wise decision, given the current market?

I am not just learning to be an average programmer, I want to be one of the best.

Will Chatgpt and the recent layoffs affect my aspiration to get a good job once I am done learning?

No,Impossible

Leave the back and focus on your front jejely

Okay

It will only help you to become a better programmer if you can use it well, programming is only 20% writing code and 80% thinking

I'm not entirely correct by the way

This is just my own point of view.

Why do you suggest I should leave the backend and focus on the frontend?

Continue preparation meets opportunity but join slack communities, they often share intern resources. Adorahacks is a popular one.

I will, thanks.

I have a question. Should I focus on frontend or also add a Backend Language like Nodejs. Ive been working with express for few weeks and I'm enjoying it.

The junior developer market is very saturated right now and there are lots of frontend developers looking to get a job. I want to stand out. Also, asides Nodejs what other backend language do you recommend?

Nobody here can assure you of anything because GPT-4 is a beast. Fireship's video on it would help put things into perspective

As with everything, you should flow with the tide and not against it. Continue what you're doing but keep your eyes on information and advancements and don't be scared to abandon all the work you've in a heartbeat if you find a path more fulfilling. It might be painful but it's better than being obsolete.

I'd say hit the market now with whatever skill you have and make as much money as you can

try out Shopify App dev if you know Node, practice and see if you can build some apps, you might be able to get Upwork gigs, that is how to stand apart.

The good thing about Frontend is that It allows you to have portfolio to share, while backend requires some experience on your CV. When it comes to backend, i will highly recommend learning GO. If you ask any serious backend developer, that is the answer you'd get. So many companies are moving on from PHP, Java, NodeJs to GO. At least from all the evidences I have in the past 4 years.

You can also choose to apply for volunteering roles just to build up experience.

literally my worries too. i'm a fullstack developer trying to break into tech. i'm very comfortable with react, node, express, vanilla css, i even have some technical articles on the side to show that i'm worth taking a chance but omooo....the saturation too mad. competition too crazy.

still hopeful sha. i''ll be ready for when the chance comes around which i know is goin to be soon.

you mind connecting? we could keep each other up to date about what next step/technology to learn/take to improve our chances of getting lucky.

My dear start networking o. Staying inside your room will not give you job. Stop coding Look for IT companies around you. Go to club and meet execs. Look for IT events and talk to people, share your complimentary. Same goes for remote, start writing to hr directly, join events. Na who you know things.

Plenty of programming jobs out there. But you need to shown them you are coming in to hit the ground running and not coming in to learn.

So my advice is to use your skills to build an SSAS e-commerce shopping application to use as your portfolio and if you can add paypal or any other payment gateway then just post it here and on other social media and you will be the one looking to employ devs to work for you.

Just continue with what you are doing. It will pay off on the long run. There are plenty of jobs to be had, at least here in the US. Don't worry about chatGPT. Good software developers will always be in demand.

Programming is not just about writing code. It takes planning, design, building, testing and debugging and so much more. ChatGPT only write code snippets based on the input it receives from a user. So just focus on what your doing. About the layoff's I guess that would normalize

ChatGpt self is becoming outdated with GPT-4 And all its current addons

I myself was shocked when one of the addons was used to analyze complex data with graphs, complex statistical analysis in seconds.

U ought to be scared and improve your game... anyone who tells you otherwise is trapped in the past.
The only way you'd be left out is if you fail to adapt fast.

There's now a major breakthrough in AI every week

In next 2 years you can literally build web apps including the front and back using voice commands just tell the AI it gives you the code and you paste it.

You must learn how to work with AI if you want to succeed in this field

What you're learning isn't a waste... after all you still need to know programming language to understand what the AI is feeding you.

You have to adapt and learn how to work with the AI simple.

After all more Job opportunities where created after the world was introduced to general purpose computers.

You can think of it this way

The fact we all can get iPhones now and take pictures doesn't mean those people doing photography business no longer feed or make money

Instead they're even making more money now.

Funny thing is, if you decide to quit and move to another field you won't feel safe either.

There's no safety net... AI is everywhere, Doctors will use it, lawyers, engineers, content creators, writers, movie producers, musicians... it will be everywhere

You're experiencing AI revolution in real time

This is your time to act, adapt and build.... This was how Mark, Jeff and Elon adapted and built their empire during the early days of the internet.

In life there's a time for everything. There's a reason I wasn't involved in a relationship because it can be a distraction. For 1 year I never opened this site and several other forums, but I've long passed that stage.
I long realized that you'll lose 90% of your close friends if you start upgrading your life. Maintain your focus and keep your eyes straight but remember you also have to refresh yourself.

No one is coming to solve your problems, your life is 100% your responsibility.
