I work with a start-up and I have been feeling overwhelmed lately. My job role is not defined and I have been taking on responsibilities outside my job role and it is really tiring. I was enjoying it initially but I've been struggling during the past couple of weeks as I've been saddled with the responsibility of finding sponsors for the company.

I understand we don't have enough hands but having a defined role will ease my work flow. I know there are people here that have worked with start-ups. I would like to know how you guys were able to scale through this stage. Thank you.

Hang in there. You are being prepared for bigger things. Do you best on every task assigned to you and leave the rest.

It was terrible. Start ups will suck the life out of you. However, you will gain good experience on the job.

Beautiful pay when US based smiley Sometimes the work is unstructured, but you have a lot of freedom to influence change and cause the startup to be more structured. For me it's really exciting, sometimes its meeeh but in all, I rather work in startups, save up, invest, build mine some day than take some kind of jobs.

Never in my life...

They have no organogram.

They have no career ladder.

Your appraisal/promotion is linked to eye service.

If you leave them for a structured company, you would be shortchaged most times as the new firm cannot accurately read your level and worth. So they will most likely throw you to entry level even after "years of experience".

Some of them intentionally run like startups for a long time. Masters at emotionally blackmailing staff.

Very soon, you will be sent to oga's house to change baby's diaper, or sent to the market to buy food stuffs to make vegetable soup or oha soup.

Running a business in Nigeria is not easy especially if it's a new business but the problem is that some start up business do not revolve around the core competence of the founder.

If for instance you set up a fashion designing business meanwhile you do not even know how to operate a sewing machine, there is a high probability that the business will fail

You wear multiple hats in a startup.

It’s normal if the company is young and growing, but beware of old companies still running like startups.

There’s a reason they are old but not grown, likely a very deep management problem.

They will likely overwhelm you because they’re disorganized and focus on the wrong things

My experience with start-ups was providing funding.

Most of them are rubbish!

Any money you inject in a start-up business in Nigeria just kiss the money good bye angry

It depends on your experience. $500 - $10k. Remote work is the deal these days. And if you have value to offer, you definitely can reasonably determine how much you want to be paid.

This is especially true for older companies still running like startups. Deep management problem. High turnover etc.

It usually like that, especially at early stage startups. Do you have equity or any significant financial rewards?

There's usually pros and cons of working at a startup. If you plan to launch a startup in the future. You get to do a lot, learn a lot, be there through key stages and apply that learnings when starting your own venture.

The vague job description also mean you potentially could define your scope of work or direction. Since you are literally doing everything for the first time, it is whatever you call it.

If you are experiencing stress in a startup environment, especially when you have no clear job description and are asked to handle multiple tasks. You can consider the following
- communicate your concerns
- prioritize as much as possible
- set boundaries early on. Don't work weekends or till 11pm
- develop your own structure
- use tech to automate your tasks and don't tell them about it. So they ask you to write 10 letters, you already have a template for it and get it done in 5 mins. But yourself extra time and tell them it will take 1 day
- if you still can't cope. Dust your resume and start job search on the side..

Goodluck

Joined a Logistics startup during the End Sarz era. Pay was cool. Business plan was perfect.
We weren't making sales because the managing director was so obsessed with the ideology of the business and didn't treat the business as a business. We weren't making sales. Resigned the 5th month when they delayed salary for some few days. Delay of Salary is the first sign a business is about to go burst. Startups are cool. And you'll get to enjoy privileges if it booms.

Only downside is chances of going burst is very high.

Working for a Startup is like a baptismal exercise. You will probably learn many things and none in particular. But you would be a good pick for graduate traineeship of Big firms. From experience

This is experience talking.

Their structure self will be closed off when available, you can't tell them things that can make them tilt correctly to reality on ground cos it's "ego first" kind of environment.

Last last, in a midterm period, everyone will eventually have to leave and find work.
