Myth or Reality: Yoruba is closer to the Edos culturally than the East is. by Obiagu1(m): 12:06pm On Feb 04, 2012
This falsehood has being propagated unabated for years and everyone assumes it is true.
When it comes to culture, Yoruba culture is not closer to that of Binis than Igbo is.
When it comes to language, Yoruba language is not closer to Bini language more than Igbo is.
When it comes to physical appearance of the Edo people, they do not in any way look like the Yorubas.

Then how did this myth originate?

They are probably not closely related to either aforementioned parties anyway  tongue

Though according to history, there was a period of contact between the bini's and yorubas where both assimilated each other's culture to a certain

degree like the Oba title and the similarities between yoruba and bini sculptures and artworks.

You should at least pick up a basic West African history book before declaring the relationship a myth.

there's historical connection with binis, but in honesty, today, an average edo can't understand a word of yoruba, and i would agree that the average edo person sees himself as closer in many ways than one, to some1 from warri, sapele, or even asaba than someone from oshogbo. whether you can stretch it further & say an edo person feels close to someone from owerri than a yoruba person, i doubt, but i coould be wrong. ofcourse, there are people in edo state, other than binis, who feel closer to igbos. yoruba language degradation amongst hitherto 'yoruba' folks is edo state is a key factor. not sure if it was ogbemudia or someone wlse who 'banned' the teaching of yoruba language in those parts in the 70s. the result is that only the elderly & those born before that era can speak yoruba. the younger ones now speak the local dialect and pidgin only.

i hasten to add that i'm not an expert in these things, so i could be wrong. what's important though is that, i do not forsee a situation where binis will agree to form a political union with igbos. dont ask me why? they will in my view, prefer to look westward, or join a 'niger delta' country even though that may not be perfect either.

This is a fact. The so called link was Oduduwa and that was it. Nothing relates the Yoruba to Edos.

Today, Edo is must closer to Igbo culturally, linguistically and appearance than Yoruba.

we have our land, you lot have yours .

edo is not related to yoruba , we know that already , we just live close to each other and have had relations for a long time.  end of story.

We are not irrational dummies like you igbos that think that once a group lives close to you,, u can claim them as siblings and then ofcourse u can claim thier land and resources as ur own. buhahhhahhahahahahahahahaa.

imagine an igbo man trying to claim ijaw as sibling, or one and the same , when the two languages are not even mutually intelligible.

If you know that, then why all these Edos are our brothers when in reality their closest brothers are in the East?

Is it Yoruba propaganda or brainwashing?

Don't really understand what you're driving at. . .

The Benin empire once stretched towards some regions of yorubaland.

No yoruba is claiming them as one of theirs even though both groups retain certain strong influences from the oduduwa folklore to some aspects of their traditional dances and dressing.

In the event of a split, it would be up to them to decide which region to join and not the yorubas nor igbos

Would advise you check historical resources all over the internet before you display continued further ignorance.

to say that their closest brothers are in the east , i think is a stretch of the imagination.  and u need to come off it.  core igbo language and culture is not in anyway similar to core edo language and culture. i have never seen an edo man wearing a red cap. and i have never seen an igbo king wearing a neck full of beads

Do not mind the fool.  He is attempting to create a wedge to a relationship that has been there for centuries! How ignorant can someone be.  Yoruba and Edo are culturally fused in some ways yet each maintain its own individual identity. No right thinking Yoruba person will call an Edo man Yoruba and vice versa. Nevertheless, the political dispositions of Edos and Yorubas have most times been the same from the very first republic to the current.  The major stalwarts of Awo were Edo, just as we are seeing in ACN today.
The trend is not going to change any time soon. Obiagu you can take a hike and look northwards for alliance. BH is waiting for your a.ss

we are all one, I beg. Edos, Igbos and Yoruba. There are traces of yoruba and Igbo in Edo language and culture.
Re: Myth or Reality: Yoruba is closer to the Edos culturally than the East is. by Afam4eva(m): 3:26pm On Feb 04, 2012
I think I'll subscribe to edogirl's position. I'll also like to add that the link between edos and Yorubas is more of a political one than cultural. They tend to tow the same part as the Yorubas because of their history politically. But I'll say that edos, just like any ND group seem to flow with everyday Igbos than they do Yorubas. Except the ones that have been alculturated.

hehehe!  grin

Me I also consider LOOKS.
Edo groups LOOK more like Eastern groups, especially considering COMPLEXION.  You don't need genetics there. Just look at them.

As for the language thing, I have always considered it incredible. However I leave that to Edos. lol
Re: Myth or Reality: Yoruba is closer to the Edos culturally than the East is. by GAR3TH(m): 5:08pm On Feb 04, 2012
If anything most edo people affiliate themselves with other groups in delta state because historically those groups came from the same Bini empire, hence why they share similar cultures. Culturally speaking, apart from the Oba, both igbos and yorubas don't really share anything cultural with edos.
Re: Myth or Reality: Yoruba is closer to the Edos culturally than the East is. by NINETOFIVE(m): 5:14pm On Feb 04, 2012
Osisi in Benin language means gun, osisi in Igbo means stick, "Ogba le gbe" in Benin means Police man, "ogba le gbe" in Igbo language means somebody that shoots gun, that is the way it is in benin language can you see the link? alj bokoharen stay away from southern affairs you don't Know a lot.

The Edos are great people and they can live with most of the other tribes in Nigeria very peacefully. They blend well with the Yorubas, Igbos, Hausas, Other Niger Deltan tribes etc. If you look closely, you will find a little of every culture in Edo land. However, it is a well known and established fact that the Edos and Yorubas have a very long history together. Indeed of all the major languages, Edo is closest to Yoruba.

Edo is more related to yoruba, both politically and culturally! In fact, every ethnic group in the West (Old west) are culturally related.

Here goes: The Mother of the Oba of Benin is called Iyoba. Their western counter part is Iyoba. They both bear Oba as king.
Also, going by the Oba of Bini's story, Oduduwa's son was from a Yoruba mother. He was called Oranmiyan (a Yoruba name) and he also produced Eweka who rule the Bini kingdom.

Some historians say, both Yoruba Obas and the Bini Oba's heads are buried in Ile-ife after they are dead!
In conclusion, a Bini prince ruled the Yorubas, a Yoruba prince ruled the Bini.

They both produced the Itsekiris and the Uhrobos directly branched out from them. Uhrobos and Itsekiris intermarry A LOT!
Dele Giwa was Edo. Enahoro (NADECO LEADER) was Edo. . . .

lwkmd! grin una no go kill person 4 nairaland. All, i know is wen the time comes for everybody to answer their fathers name the igbo speaking edo are off with asaba. The rest can go where ever they are comfortable.

OP, Edo and yorubas cultural similarities starts and finish with juju/agbero and even that is an African thing.
