@OLA, from your post i think the only problem you are having is spoken english, my one advise goes thus: 1) watch lots of educative programmes 2) speak english often 3) challenge yourself by speaking in public not minding the fact that you might be mocked 4) get yourself a job that will make u speak english a lot at least for the main time not minding the remuneration 5) don't mind what comes out of your mouth, just speak, let it flow but be watchful (i.e. note people's correction not minding the source) because where your are today is not necessarily where you will be for the rest of your life. 6) finally, go to conferences, seminars and always participate in any discusion you find yourself in with good speakers of english language, make contributions with these you become so bold to speak in public, above all be brave to express yourself. The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago and the second best is now. best of luck sir. |

@ Purist, Well noted points and good debating skills as well. Kudos. @ Poster, The basic rule is to work hard on your shortcomings. I am not going to dwell exceedingly on how to overcome your English language deficiency, because many forumers here have made some invaluable contributions. However, I suggest the following: 1. Do not attempt to learn how to speak proper English from watching movies. 2. If you are privy to the Prime Minister's question time in England, that is a good programme to watch to learn and to polish off your skills. 3. Read good books. Not novels. May I suggest authors such as Brian Tracy, Napoleon Hill and John Maxwell. 4. Get a book and write down phrases that you hear. Once in a while, learn practicing these phrases and repeat them often. Best wishes. |

Kemjisuper, I heard a comment recently that the screen set is the last dictatorship in the civilised world. It came from a movie diector. So you are right the guy might come out with more than better spoken english. Like you said a brain wash. On the flip side he may have more than one opiniuon on any issue. At least he gets to see the world from two different sets of eyes. |

Purist:So pray tell me Professor Purist, when an adjective can be used interjectively or rather in substitution with a noun with the same sentence having the same meaning as to what the writer intended to pass across to its readers? Did you bother to read the context in which the adjective was used in place of the noun? Purist:As far as you are concerned it is neither ''sound'' nor ''unsound'', this rather again smacks off the degrading of educational quality when silly mistakes can be effectively swept away with the excuse that pundits as well fall into such. Silly mistakes made as such the one above is more than enough to get you a fail in an academic setting. Purist:You are such an hypocritical tool. It is either word ''harangue'' is lost on you, or as usual your recourse to reading sentences without a mental grasp of it is at work again. You ask a question here in which you are found to be in same line of fire. You decided to extemporize without knowing what exactly you are saying. What is a forum? Forum:
[li]A public meeting place for open discussion. [/li] [li]A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website. [/li] [li]A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation. [/li]
Open discussions are subjected to criticisms and counter criticisms, which you have as well decided to do with my postings and I so choose to retort with my own ground or stance in response to your posts. If you don't want to be harangued based on your posts, then do not post I retort again. Or at best ignore! Purist:I am the quintessence of arrogance? What an outlandish and bovine statement to emanate from you. Well, to cut you short, summary of me from you on a forum, does not bug me! I have long gone past the era of being moved by the baloney of what peanuts like you who skylark with words have to say about my cyber-entity. But then again if my arrogance (which every human being has), annoys your inanity, accept my apologies. Purist:There are two sides to being factual. Either you are subjective or objective with it. My opinion to which you belong to or you don't even belong to, will not make or mar your day. Purist:So when you came attacking me for no reason here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-90950.192.html you never knew you could apply the same drivel of being ''behaviourally uncouth and morally improper to harangue people'' to yourself? Sanctimonious preaching, keep on with it. I, of all people know you better. Cheers. 1 Like |

@mrpataki, I'm not at all surprised at your rejoinder, as I am already used to your circumlocutory manner of debate. I will oblige you nonetheless. mrpataki: Lol @mrpataki. I must say that it is rather amusing that you cannot even grasp the simple message behind the post I directed at you. Even more amusing is the fact that you are pushing so hard to prove that you are right. First of all, niceuzor did not use an adjective interjectively with a noun. Rather, he used it interchangeably. Secondly, my contention here is not about his own grammatical blunder, but your own proposed correction which supposes that he did not get his tenses right. Perhaps, you should look up the meaning of the word 'tense' in a dictionary, and explain to us how niceuzor's blooper translates to him not getting his tenses right! Obviously, you seem to incorrigibly believe that every grammatical blunder committed, stems from the offender's inability to get his tenses right, even if it's just a spelling error! mrpataki: It is not a case of silly mistakes being swept away, rather, it's a case of intelligent people being able to overlook superficial issues like minor spelling errors, especially on a discussion forum like this one. But even then, corrections offered for such minor errors should rather be offered jokingly and in good spirit, rather than in a contemptuous manner as evidently done by you. By the way, it is "smacks of", not "smacks off". mrpataki: No one asked you for the definition of a forum. All the time you spent digging that up could have as well been spent on looking up the meaning of the word "harangue". Your case here is even far more pathetic than that of niceuzor that you look down on. Nothing is worse than a man who thinks he is right (when he is conspicuously wrong), and keeps arguing blindly while making a fool of himself. For one who once thought KVA was a product, it is little wonder that you think it is okay to harangue people based on their posts! mrpataki: And this is what I call, 'an agglomeration of balderdash'! I'm sorry, but you have just said NOTHING SENSIBLE here. Besides, how is it possible that arrogance can annoy one's inanity? I know you've got your way with big words, but please, learn how to apply them correctly! I think this is what is deceiving you - just because you have crammed some big words which you obviously learnt from people's debates here on Nairaland, you now think you have the authority to deride people who you feel are "below your standard" in written English. Perhaps, you may as well want to exhibit your "grammatical prowess" here. Enjoy. mrpataki: Lol. . . and what's with the lecture now? mrpataki: Are you now trying to play the victim here or what? In all honesty and fairness, can you tell the whole house who started all these vituperations between us? The "attack" on that thread was simply a response to that which you initiated elsewhere, prior to that moment. Regards. |

Purist:Neither am I a stranger to your usual verbose. Purist:And once again it is rather amusing that you as well come with your silent belligerent method of posting. Purist:Thanks for the correction. You got me there. Purist:It is called an oxymoron slowpoke! You really have a long way to go when you try to engage me. Purist:I am way above playing the victim as you usually do. Seeing that you are totally bereft of what and where my stand is or was, I was simply showing where you have erroneously fallen into what you were preaching against. Which has become your trademark on this forum. Cheers. I would have replied you fully, but she won't allow me to post further than this. So I leave you for now. She is more important to me than you. |

Since you said you are graduate, you should simply pay attention to conversations. Get some tutorial pronouciation Disc & CD player (mobile): People from non English speaking countries learn using this device. Listing to news broadcast always; but some of the newscasters make mistakes sometimes. Note: It depends on your line duty. If you are into sciences & Engineering, I am damn sure you will know how to use the terms in those areas perfectly. Little English is requried in that area. Note: Check yourself may be you are fluent but you have difficulty of talking in the midst of people. I also have the same problem. You feel people might crucify you if you make mistake. Secret: Talk more in the presence of your friends, people who will take their time to correct you. Lastly, reveal your secret to a younger person. If you associate with kids of may be primaries trust me before you know it you are going to change and feel different about yourself. The only disadvantage of the line that comes before this; your way of conversion might turn childish. You can mend it before it gets out of hand. |

@pataki mrpataki: You really are a clown, and I sincerely apologize for overrating your cognitive abilities. Pray tell, what do you understand by oxymoron? Even a JSS2 student can clearly differentiate between a figure of speech and the gibberish you wrote there. Next thing I will read here now is you telling me "Aspersions of Stupidity" is an hyperbole! I guess you're right - I really do have a long way to go when engaging you. Sheesh! mrpataki: Sigh. I weep for you. |

Purist: Lol. . . . . I have promised her that I will not reply you back in kind. I can see that you are nothing but a recusant cyber being. The word oxymoron is lost on you again! I love you too with the love of Christ, just a brotherly love and nothing beyond that. Oxymoron:
[li]a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect[/li] [li]A rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined[/li]
So when I simply state that,
[li]If my arrogance annoys your inanity, please pardon me[/li]. Thats an oxymoron! [li]Politely rude[/li] [li]I hate to love being banned [/li]
To you it is another form of claptrap, but it is simply a figure of speech called Oxymoron. How much more can I afford to teach you Piriton? Regards. |
Re: How To Improve My Spoken English? by Purist(m): 1:54pm On Jan 15, 2008 |
pahtahkee: After constructing a catachrestic sentense, you now turn around to try and paint it like it's some figure of speech, hoping that your blooper will go unnoticed. Sorry dude, but that doesn't work on me. One thing I find quite interesting though, is that you specifically chose a figure of speech which you most probably learnt from me, and now, you try to make it seem like I don't know the meaning of the word myself. Nice move, but not good enough. pahtahkee: ROTFLMAO! So much for one who condescendingly corrects others. After reading this line of yours, I've come to realise that there really is no point engaging you further in this discourse. Besides, enough damage has been done to this thread already. So on this note, I humbly rest my case. Peace. |
