SilentPrince: Literate in Arabic language and culture. In the 1970s during the reign of northern military dictators, a PhD holder from the south of Nigeria was equated to an Alhaji from the north who hardly passed through primary school. Going to Mecca then was all that was required for a northerner to be equal to a PhD holder from the south. 1 Like 1 Share |

I hope the op knows the meaning of being literate. A juju priest is literate in the act of vodoo. As it was in the north, so was it in every race and tribes in Nigeria and the world at large. They had an indigenous way of writing and reading. But what you show us is not indigenous but an Arabic writing which came as a result of Islamic conquest. If you need to tell us you are educated, you don't need to behave like the proverbial lizard that jumbs down from a height and starts praising itself. People would see it in you and you would exhibit it. The Hausa Fulani is far behind educationally in Nigeria 4 Likes 1 Share |

One can easily deduce from the comments, that so many lack understanding and reasoning, there is a big difference between being literate and educated,i didnt go to skool to be taught how to read and write alone, moreover whats inscripted on the slate is quaran and i was a muslim and can tell better,no imam teaches 1 plus 1 in makaranta instead its quaran,if you did history in the university, you wouldnt argue cause the system of kano is explicit pior before colonialism and independence,so @ silentprince is right. 2 Likes |

SaniSANOH: If you are going to write about literacy, the least you can do is spell correctly! It is LITERATE not LITRATE. I've taken the liberty of editing your post...now go forth and spell incorrectly no more 1 Like |

1. This picture is a Photoshop. 2. If its those years, they wouldn't be wearing singlets. 3. Those writings are Arabic and thats not the medium to measure the literacy level of an individual. 4. Next story pls! |

OP what you're saying is common knowledge, ask the haters what their kindred were doing in the villages at that time. This is Sir Ahmadu Bello encouraging girl child western education in the early 60's. 1 Like

The fact that the OP has to make a fallacious claim (where is the shock?) about a non-entity (why would anyone care for her opinion) shows that the OP is an intelligent individual. If you are so proud of being a Northerner why are you looking for external approval like a child? The facts are - northern Nigeria has some of the worst human development indices in the world. If that region seceded it would be where southern Sudan is, minus the oil revenue. |

TheAdvocate: And I'm sure you do not know Arabic is the source of the numbers you use (the one you chose over that of the Romans), and the source of the first ever computer (the Abacus). Mr Literate indeed. |

abdulaz:Biko say what you know. How could you assert that Western education was taught through Arabic? 1. Were the Arabs considered "Western" in the first place? 2. Please relates with your history texts and indulge yourself. It would be better to consider the ways Arabs spread Islam and the ways Missionaries spread Christianity. 3. With your claim about "copying" from the Arabs, would you please highlight some of the things "Westerners" learnt from the Arabs which are still in existence today? |

SilentPrince:I really didn't want to comment on this thread but what are you saying here? So they encouraged you to sell drugs in your school? Were you encouraged to sell hard drugs in your school? Were you encouraged to buy and steal arms and become militants in your country? Were you encouraged to rob others in your school? Were you you encouraged to rape others in your school? Were you encouraged to become pirates and make money off someones hardword in your school? Were you encouraged to always defend a person from your tribe even when he's guilty? So if you guys are well educated then why are these problems more evident in your region? Just like the north, every region has its own problems. 2 Likes |

Sanchez01: Terrorists are against western education, not northerners or Muslims. Furthermore, not all northerners or Hausa/Fulani are Muslims. |

OP, you are literate yet your leaders still claimed educationally disadvantaged states. Or is just to pocket our commonwealth? You are literate, yet you have a hoard of Almajiri that is a ready army for Maitashine, Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen, Malam El-Zalzaki, etc. By the way, the word is spelt LITERATE and not "LITRATE" as you have literately written. |

Xetima: How do you juxtapose that with those that sell their sisters wombs to baby factories, cannibalize their fellow humans, and take part in gory satanic rituals yet claim to be literate? Don't misconstrue societal issues with illiteracy. There are Irish extremists too (IRA). 1 Like |

SilentPrince: Says the person that doesnt know that to be literate is to be educated.. The question is in which aspect is the literacy or education if you will? Literacy is simply ability to read and write - now apply that to religions and languages |
