Havin driven a few cars with cruse contron I have always wonderd if it was really economical (fuel wise) using it . Yea makin it easier and less trouble acceleratin etc is welcome but hay what about my fuel!!! The dons in the house ie, sienna,promise, oyenit etc please lets have the techie part explained here as well as the practicals. So what say you? |

Cruise control is actually more economical than maintaining a constant speed manually. On a long run, using your foot to maintain a set speed involves opening and closing the throttle, it's very unlikely a fixed pressure on the gas pedal will be able to keep the car moving smoothly, especially when ascending / descending gradients. Cruise control is a lot more precise, in modern cars, it doesn't open and close the throttle to maintain a set speed, engine output is varied via the ECU and engine speed sender, which is the way it should be. Even older cars that had a less sophisicated system, are more efficient than your right foot. My Audi RS4 doesn't have cruise, compared to my Audi S4, which does. Both cars return very different consumption figures too, with the S4 being a lot better on juice. I plan to do a weekend break to France, and I know which car I'll be taking. I'm actually also looking to retrofit OEM cruise control to my RS4. |
