Though the news of Lehmann being the emergency keeper Arsene said he was going to sign is not confirmed, we can all assume its a done deal. Heck, Arsenal never announces any transfer deal until the player has chosen a squad number and its sure not going to be different this time around.

Many people are quite surprised with this deal, going back to the now unnecessary and irrelevant blame game of Wenger not signing a “World Class” keeper in the summer. You would have taught Szczesny’s performances have been abysmal.

However, that’s not the reason for this transfer. With the now yearly injury course taking its toll, we are now down to 3 keepers with Almunia being the only one with any sort of competitive experience. The other 2, Shea and Martinez have a total of bugger all first team experience. An experienced keeper had to be brought in just in case the course decides to go extreme and takes Almunia for early summer vacation too.

So where does Lehmann stand? To be fair, I’m sure he realises he is past it. He was past it before he left Arsenal the first time. No matter how poor Almunia is, Lehmann is no better in my opinion. He knows all he is meant to do is keep the bench warm. He just wants to help out old friends in time of need. He definitely has a positive relationship with Arsenal because he has been taking a coaching course training the young keepers.

Some would say why didn’t Arsene sign a keeper capable of pushing Almunia. The sad truth is that there is no keeper out there that is good enough, not in a first team and whose manager would be willing to release. And signing Lehmann brings its own added advantage.

The nutter might be just what Arsenal needs to salvage the season. Jens is someone who would not take the rubbish from the players. I can imagine him putting Denilson and Diaby in their place after a shambolic performance. He should also bring in the mythical leadership this Arsenal team needs. And yeah, when was the last time showed glimpses of a quality keeper? Yep, when Lehmann was on his shoulders!

All I see in this deal are positives. Hopefully, it would be to our benefit. COYG!

PS: imagine Lehmann and Szczesny together. Total nutters!
