Whats Next?

With the current uncertainty created by the dismal economic outlook of Nigeria and coupled with the current level of insecurity in the country, a lot of young Nigerians are asking what is next?. The situation has created a cloud of danger which has a knock-on effect on every sector of the country.
Japa! Japa! Japa Go Canada!
Japa is a popular slang in Nigeria that means to run away from an uncertain situation and in this case, the current cloud of danger that surrounds Nigeria. Everybody is japaing, your neighbours are japaing , your partner might be japaing without even notifying you.

Why are people leaving?

According to a BBC article, the reasons for migration can be classified into economic, social, political & environmental. Economic migration is moving in search of work or to follow a career path.
Nigeria is currently ravaged by several socio-economic issues, some of which include insecurity, high cost of goods and services, and unemployment, amongst others. Nigeria’s inflation rate as of August 2022 was 19%, one of the highest in Africa and the highest on record since 2015, while the unemployment rate stood at 33.3% as of December 2020, with an estimated 40 million Nigerians without jobs.
Kunle, a zenith bank staff member, was asked why he left Nigeria for Canada; he replied, “I felt underpaid and overworked. Inflation was also eating into my salary, so I was getting poorer".

The Implication of the Japa wave

There are benefits and downsides; the benefits include increased diaspora remittances, an upgrade in remuneration for loyal employees, and a decline in unemployment in the country. However, skill gaps and reduction in productivity outcomes remain downsides.

Are you working towards Japa?

Recently, one of my friends in Canada hinted to me about a new immigration technique used by Nigerians to relocate to Canada that doesn't require IELTS, Many Nigerians are already taking advantage of it. If one of your 2022 goals is relocating to Canada, then you might want to try this new technique watch the video below

Not everyone will make it in Nigeria.
Not everyone will make it in Canada.

Sometimes it is better to live as a prince in Nigeria than a slave abroad.

If you have the skill set to "survive" in Nigeria of today, you would definitely "thrive" in the abroad.
Life abroad is simpler, you do the work and enjoy the benefits.

I pray that Nigeria gets better so people won't have to think of japa. But right now, in my opinion, if you have the capacity to japa please do.

I agree that not everyone will make it in Canada but I can guarantee that with the way the system works here, and if you're wise in cutting your coat according to your cloth, the odds that you will make it here is higher than staying back in Nigeria.

Just today, I took time to study the bus and subway routes of the regular places I go to see how I can minimize my transit cost. I realized I've been spending so much on going to school, placement agency, and work. Taking buses and subway within a particular city transit costs less because you get free transfers within the hour so for every place I go now, I'll try make sure I stick to the same city bus where possible and also try avoid intercity bus routes.
