How Can You Compare Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) With Others? by Ameliarich: 4:30pm On Nov 12, 2023
• What is medium density fiberboard (MDF)?
It is an engineered wood product that is made by combining wax and resin binder with wood fiber. Wood fiber is the product achieved from breaking down of hard wood or soft wood residues. This process is done in defibrator. Once combined with wax and resin binder, they are formed into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is denser than plywood. MDF has certain qualities like it is denser, flat, and stiff, has no knots and easily machined that makes it better than plywood.
The MDF has plenty of physical properties and dimensions. This helps to design the end product with the particular MDF needed. To increase the properties of the panels, additives are added to its mixture. The analogous density profile of these panels requires complex and accurate machining and finishing procedures for making superior finished MDF products.

• Where is MDF used?
 Doors, Jams and Mill work
 Edge shaping and machining
 Embossing
 Laminate flooring
 Laminating and finishing
 Trim molding
 Office and residential furniture
 Pre finished paneling
 Store fixtures
 Kitchen cabinets

• Comparing MDF to other substrates:
MDF is extensively used than any other material due to its following characteristics:

 Trim waste is less when MDF is used than any other materials
 MDF can be machined into complicated patterns due to its strength and stability. It can tolerate anything because of being strong in its properties.
 As MDF is made from byproducts of chips and shavings, it is carefully tackled for each use. This results in cheaper product solutions than alternatives.
 One of its properties is that it looks beautiful wherever it is used. So it is most preferred to be used in kitchen cabinets and modern homes construction for beautiful woof work. It is used extensively in home interiors.
 Interior trim and moldings are easily machined and laminated or painted. MDF can be machined with tight tolerances and is used frequently in interior trims.
 As it is made from real wood, it is a renewable resource that it's not hazardous to environment and there is lowest carbon impact of all building materials. In America wood fiber is commonly taken from forests to make wood products. Due to the usage of recycled wood fiber in composite panels, the problem of burying them or burning them has been solved as they are now used in productivity. 97% of harvested log is used.
 The manufacturing process is clean and fast, leaving hardly a waste behind in the end of production. The raw materials are mostly used.
 As compared to other ply woods, MDF has the absence of voids or gaps that will give sharp edges with no tear out.
 MDF is well damped acoustically that makes it perfect for speaker enclosures.
 MDF is suitable for those surfaces that needs to be painted. This is so because MDF has a smooth and dense surface that is ideal for painting.
 It is an excellent building material, as it gets glued easily and joins securely.
 It can be cut and shaped with the same accessories used in construction and wood working.
 Special and more expensive types of MDF are used where moisture is present.
 MDF is comparatively stronger than particle board and is just like ply wood so it is preferably used other than any substrate.
 MDF has a lower cost than many types of hardwood lumber.
 It gives consistency throughout the board and is not susceptible to splintering
 It has higher rate per inch, less strength and inability to repel moisture and lack of wood grain as compared to wood. MDF is moisture resistant not water resistant and also not water proof and is still likely to swell or warp if comes in direct contact with such kind of elements. Such as it is unable to bear rain.
 The material is too absorbent for the stain and will not give a finished look to board.
 It also helps in resisting termites and insects.
 As MDF is made from a waste of wood so it's not only eco-friendly but it is also economically better than ply wood or solid wood. It's good to be used in wardrobes, tables, light weight beds, shelves, etc.
 If used in outdoors, you must paint it well with water resistant paints to protect the surface.

Putting all these properties in mind, you can assure using these wood panels in construction other than steel, cement, plastic and glass as it is environmental friendly.
