Car batteries are essential for the functioning of a vehicle. They are typically made of lead acid, containing lead plates immersed in a solution of sulfuric acid, and are popular for automotive use due to their ability to deliver high currents and low cost compared to other types of batteries. However, a fake car battery can frustrate you, as it won't last as long as a good one. It's important to know the signs of a failing car battery since turning the ignition only for nothing to happen can derail your whole day. In general, your car will usually need a new battery after three to four years.

Car Battery Lifespan

The lifespan of your car battery depends on several factors, including your driving habits and where you live. If you don’t drive often or only use the car for short trips, it's going to weaken your battery. Leaving the power on when the ignition is off, such as leaving an interior light on overnight or leaving the key in the ignition, can also kill the battery quickly.

Furthermore, the climate where you live is another factor to pay attention to, as driving in an area where it's hot all year will wear your battery down faster than driving in a colder climate.

Things That Shorten Battery Life

There are several warning signs that your battery needs to be replaced. If it's taking your car longer to start or the engine cranking for longer, the battery's charge has gotten weak. You may also notice that your interior lights aren't as bright as they used to be or that a dashboard light that looks like your battery will turn on when it's low or has low battery fluid. Additionally, if your battery is cracked or has started corroding, you'll be able to see it just by looking at it or even smell it since it gives off a pungent sulfur smell.

My car battery disgraced me recently.
I was running and decided to switch to service lane only then, the engine stopped and the dashboard asked me to switch to manual gear. It then told me to switch to higher gear but it's still not moving.

I parked and saw CheckEngine everywhere. I scanned it and saw Cylinder 1 to 6 misfire.

I called my rewire. Told him to bring 6 plugs and 6 ignition coils. Lol. As I thought they've all failed. He told me no need and that he knows the problem.

He arrived, used another battery and raced my car to his workshop.

I bought a new battery right away and serviced the plugs and he raced the car again. No errors.

I am still surprised a poor battery could affect my car. Lesson learnt
