Why Are Food Trucks So Expensive? by FoodRelate: 11:13am On May 08
A food truck is a semi-movable restaurant or food store in form of a large trailer or vehicle that prepares and sells food to its customers. Food trucks are becoming very popular, especially in the united states of America.

Suppose you live in places like the US, Canada, Dubai, or any European country. You get to see a lot of these food trucks in the streets. They are good options to bring tasty food.

Although, most people that get their meals from these food trucks, say they are ridiculously expensive. And it is hard to believe that food from a small vehicle would be more expensive than a building restaurant.

Why Are Food Trucks So Expensive?

Here are some of the reasons why we think food trucks are expensive;

1. Rental Cost

Rental cost is one of the reasons that food trucks are expensive. In time past, food truck owners didn’t have to pay rent, they practically park their trucks at some designated area for free.

With the increase in demand and popularity of food trucks, the government, and the city, all want to be part of the financial flow from the business.

Food truck owners are given specific areas where they would park and do their business with a rental fee.

There are lots of misconceptions about the food truck being easier and cheaper to operate and manage because they don’t have to rent a building.

2. Work/ Operational Hours

The number of hours food trucks serve and sell food is another reason why food businesses are so expensive.

Unlike the food truck business, most traditional restaurants have more hours to carry out their operation and business activities. They have more customer traffic all day than the food truck business.

This makes the food truck business have fewer operating hours and turnover. And this makes them want to meet up and cover up any lapses or time they may lack, making their services and food more expensive.

3. Food Truck Loans

In the past when the food truck business isn’t as popular as it is now, you can get an old truck and renovate it to fit what you need or get a vehicle for a small amount.

People get good and decent loans to fix their vehicles and get them to meet their needs, thereby making food truck business owners easy to pay back the loan collected.

But this is not how things are anymore, with the advancement of food trucks nowadays with other special features added to them, food truck owners need a larger loan to acquire the truck making it difficult for food truck owners to pay back.

Food trucks are now very expensive to purchase. And with the expensive loan, they increase the cost of their services and food to meet up payment of these loans or have their trucks repossessed.

4. High Food Cost

As we all know the cost of things especially food items is really on the high side now. You don’t get as much profit as you can.

Restaurants make more profit because they have a larger customer base and they buy their foodstuff and goods in bulk. This helps them to get things a little bit cheaper.

Also, the restaurants have bigger storage spaces for the food item and other goods that could last for a while, this enables them to buy and store more goods and food items in bulk. While food trucks have limited space for storage, this limits them to buy goods and foodstuff in bulk.

But, food truck business owners, don’t buy their goods in bulk, and this tends to make the cost of their food more expensive.

5. Competition

With the increase in the popularity of food truck businesses, many people have to seem to venture into the business. And this has caused a lot of competition.

You know these food trucks are parked in the street, imagine a scenario where more than two food truck vehicles are parked on the same street.

Food truck business get their customers from passers-by, and they tend to increase the price of their food or whatever it is they are selling to gain attention from the competitors, because people believe the higher the price, the higher the value.

6. High Fuel Cost

High fuel cost is another factor that makes food trucks expensive because food trucks are mobile, they consume a lot of fuel transporting and moving their business from place to place.

Most food trucks can be stationary, but a lot of time they move from place to place to find a more suitable and profitable area.

This usually adds to and increase their operational expenses, thereby making them increase the cost of their food and services to be able to cover up cost.

Conclusion

Although food trucks can be expensive. But they are flexible and always have excellent and tasty food for you to try on because most food trucks actually hire a professional chef to keep standards and beat the competition.
