A New Commandment For Believers – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
08 May 2022 | 3:48 am

"He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him."

Those who claim to know God, but do not obey His words are liars. Although, they have knowledge of divine requirement of love in the Bible, yet they hate fellow believers. Such people do not usually take offence at sins or the absence of moral values around them, but they take offence at their fellow believers on their duty. Such a despicable attitude has caused many to forsake Jesus Christ and His work.

If we are truly living in the light, we should not create any "occasion of stumbling" for others. For want of love, Cain killed his brother. But today, many use their pens, phones, information and tale to assassinate other believers' character and kill their courage. Such compromisers are liars. They can only hurt their victims here on earth, but they will surely burn eternally in hell, except they repent. Joab, Absalom with his worldly-wise woman emissary, Amnon, Ananias and Sapphira among others who traded in lies have their part in the lake of fire.

Liars come in different categories. The first are pulpit liars: They share fantastic testimonies to encourage people, but their stories are all lies. The second are religious liars. This group use the Bible to tell lies. The third are the latter-day hypocritical liars; they package false doctrines in attractive colours to deceive the people.

The fourth are service-rendering liars. This group of people render eye-service. Fifth are praise-seeking liars. They lie in the process of seeking the praise of men. Sixth are position-seeking liars. Seventh are market liars; they lie and even swear to get what they cannot get by plain truth.

Those who lie for earthly gains will surely end up in hell fire. "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone…"

Those who keep the word of God are perfected in His love. Many people think that they have no need of exhortations or preaching. But the Apostle’s encouragement was not to unbelievers. He wrote to believers, not because they are weak, but "because (they) are strong, and the word of God abideth in (them)." Satan and his cohorts have no power over any believer because he is saved and conformed to the image of Christ.

Amidst trials and temptations, we are able to "overcome them: because greater is he that is in (us), than he that is in the world." We gain victory over them because they have no power to subdue us. We will overcome all the challenges that come our way through Christ who loved and sacrificed Himself for us. “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world."

In spite of the enemy's threats of death, we should not love God less; we should rather keep standing on the truth of His word. Satan cannot terminate our lives; he does not have the final say over our lives. We should always be consoled by the fact that God has promised to satisfy us with long life and show us His salvation. As Christ’s word abides in us, we will overcome all the challenges thrown at us by the devil. "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord."

Transforming Power Of God's Grace – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
15 May 2022 | 4:05 am

Onesimus is one man in the Bible whose life aptly captures much of the transforming power of God’s grace and Christ's redemption. Before his conversion, he was undependable, unprofitable and a runaway slave who had stolen from his master, Philemon. But after his conversion, he became a dependable and trustworthy believer who had the privilege of labouring with Apostle Paul. Grace transformed him from being a guilty thief to a righteous son who was ready to obey God by doing the necessary restitution to his estranged master.

Paul, the Apostle, surrounded himself with other transformed people who were profitable to the Lord and the church. Epaphras was faithful in the ministry and fervent in spirit. Marcus was formally a failure who became the favourite in ministry. Those who failed in the past should not throw in the towel, but make effort to become useful in God’s kingdom. Aristarchus demonstrated fearlessness of true friendship in ministry.

Sadly, Demas, who once stood for Christ, displayed faithlessness, fickleness, foolishness and folly, and fell in ministry. We must never allow dull, weak, lukewarm and lethargic persons around us. Like Luke, we should be focused and be firm in ministry.

Paul had confidence in Philemon’s obedience to his requests, especially to receive back the transformed and now profitable Onesimus. As believers, at all times, we should be obedient to the word of God and remain fervent, faithful, fruitful and firm to the end.

A truly converted believer who has left sin is always marked by a new life of righteousness. Regardless of the past years of living in sin and ignorance of Christ, grace, the gospel and His demands, God commands "all men every where to repent."

When Onesimus met with Paul and was confronted with the demands of the gospel and the evidence of God’s grace, he surrendered to the Lord. And “being made free from sin, (he became a servant) to God, (and had) fruit unto holiness."

Realisation of one's sinful state and the eternal consequence of a life of sin leads to confession and repentance, which marks the point of conversion in the life of a sinner. This produces a change of mind and attitude to follow the Lord. Sinners who are yet to be saved should repent immediately because without salvation, they have no hope of eternal life. A change happened in the life of Onesimus after his conversion. He became born again and a new creature in Christ; old things were passed away and all things became new for him.

When a sinner meets the Lord and reconciles himself to Him, his new life in Christ will be visible to people around him. The guilt, punishment and condemnation that have been taken away will give him hope to get to heaven if he dies in the Lord or the rapture takes place. Believers who have benefitted from the grace of God that brings salvation to all men must ensure that they stay away from sin. "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not."

Transforming Power Of God's Grace – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
22 May 2022 | 2:55 am

God requires obedience from all believers. Obedience is the central evidence that we are saved. However, there are people who are obedient to things that are not commanded such as tradition, suggestions and customary observances in the community.

Apostle Paul, in his letter, pleaded with Philemon to forgive and "receive" Onesimus. Although God had forgiven him, he had to be reconciled to his master. He was willing to return and make restitution but had nothing to pay back for what he had stolen. Therefore, Apostle Paul offered to pay on his behalf. Yet, he personally had to go back to confess, apologise and submit to his offended master.

Restitution is not the Law of Moses as some people think and has not been abolished. Restitution was required long before the Law of Moses when Abimelech took Sarah, Abraham’s wife, unlawfully. God revealed to him through a dream that he must make restitution. "Now, therefore, restore the man his wife … and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die. And Abimelech … restored him Sarah his wife." Restitution is still required today.

To maintain a living relationship with God and be right in His sight, we must make restitution wherever necessary. God emphasises this doctrine. In making restitution, it is proper to do more than is required. Abimelech and Zachaeus gave extra, but also restored what was demanded. For our offerings and services to be acceptable to the Lord, we must ensure that we resolve every pending grievance we have against others and “be reconciled” first before we come to offer before the Lord.

While salvation reconciles us to God, restitution reconciles us to our fellow men. It enables us to "have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men." We should keep our minds free of anything that anyone will legally, logically, faithfully and truthfully say they have against us. When we obey God’s demands and the indispensable truth of the Scriptures, which our leaders preach, we bring joy to them.

Comprehension of divine ownership makes believers willing to surrender their possessions for the worship of God. The believers of old gave wholeheartedly because they knew everything they possessed belonged to the Lord. God owns our life, time, talent, money, intelligence and properties. Therefore, the language of every true believer should be "My Lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have."

Apostle Paul realised that Philemon understood divine ownership; therefore, he asked him to prepare a place to lodge for him. When Philemon eventually read the letter, he received, forgave and restored Onesimus. He also realised that Onesimus belonged to the Lord; therefore, he released him for service. “But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself." As believers, we should live for the Lord and give ourselves to Him without any reservation. "And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God."

Power Of The Excelling Christ
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

The Lord Jesus Christ is the excellent and exalted One. As He leads us according to His promise, we are "filled with all the fullness of God" and given grace "according to the measure of the gift of Christ. For the perfecting of the saints… the work of the ministry… (and) the edifying of the body of Christ."

Many people think that the gifts of Jesus Christ are only for the early century Christians. Today, He still gives gifts. He wants His power to manifest in us "till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."

Our lives, spirit, soul, body, language, character, behaviour and interaction must be reconciled to Christ so He could "present (us) holy and un-blameable and un-reprovable in his sight." He is our hope of glory. His grace, power, partnership and the gift of the Holy Ghost should make us "continue in the faith grounded and settled …" so that we will get to our glorious destiny.

Christ has promised to give us the fullness of the goodness, grace and glory of God. For those who have strong desire and hunger for righteousness, "they shall be filled.” These are the people who feel they do not have enough righteousness that flows from Calvary. They are conscious of their lack of righteousness and desire to be saturated with it. Unfortunately, many who claim to be members of the visible church do not have any desire or passion for righteousness. They seek many things, but fail to "seek… first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness…" Christ has promised that when we seek His righteousness first, all other things "shall be added" to us.

God is not stingy with His grace and righteousness. "And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace." He gives more grace, saving grace, sanctifying grace, sustaining grace, abundant grace and sufficient grace for every need of our lives and every spiritual challenge. He also promises to give us the fullness of righteousness, power and joy, but He wants us to ask. "And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you … that your joy may be full."

Christ gives the power to bear fruit more abundantly. He manifested the fulfilment of this promise by giving His disciples power "against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease." Christ's desire for believers’ success in life and ministry has not changed. Therefore, we can also experience the fulfilment of His promised power as we connect and associate with Him, follow Him and willingly do His will.

As believers, we have been freely given power by Christ for fruitfulness and we must manifest it. His command is, "go, preach, say, The kingdom of heaven is at hand." Furthermore, we are "endued" with power and authority from heaven to "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils" as well as “bring forth fruit” that will abide. We must begin to act confidently as people who are saturated with the power from on high.

Christ calls us to partnership with Him. He assures us of His presence "always, even unto the end of the world" and promised to give us the strength, understanding, courage, insight, enlightenment and all that we need to bear fruit. We come to the church to be enlightened, empowered, and energised to "Go … into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Christ did not speak to the world to go into all the churches. Rather, He spoke to believers in the church to go out and preach the gospel.

After obeying the commandment to preach, we need more powers, encouragement and freshness. For those who come to the church, but refuse to reach out to sinners with the gospel, the purpose is defeated. However, if we obey, Christ has promised to work with us, "confirming the word with signs following." As we comply with His directive in our partnership with Him and remain faithful to His course, God will supply all the anointing, boldness, enthusiasm, money and motivation we need to succeed.

Prayer That Prevails – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
05 June 2022 | 3:51 am

The subject of prayer is common, but not understood by many. The prayer of Solomon in particular was recorded to teach us how to prevail with God in prayer and possess unlimited blessings. Some people pray, but do not prevail and possess because their prayer does not please God because they do not know the bases and conditions of answered prayer.

God has given us the same open request He gave to Solomon: “Ask what I shall give thee.” However, many believers do not receive because they ask wrongly. “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”

Solomon received and possessed because he asked without selfishness. Also, when he made his request to God, he did not regard iniquity in his heart. The scripture warns: “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” Those who go to prayer camps and special services with high expectation, but pay little or no attention to the word of God will not be able to prevail or possess their inheritance through prayer. Such people who turn their eyes from the promises and precepts of God’s word should understand that: “He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.” To receive from God, we must approach Him with a pure and sincere heart, mind and motive, like Solomon.

God granted Solomon the privilege of asking and the promise of answering. The young king’s attitude and approach to the Lord’s request is instructive. One, he did not seek a prophet to ask for him. The Lord has given us many direct promises in His word such as the promise of salvation, sanctification, Holy Ghost baptism, healing and deliverance. He wants us to ask without resorting to any prophet or intermediary.

Two, he did not cry and plead, “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me,” Genesis 32:26.

Unfortunately, some believers remain at the primary level of prayer and ignorantly practise the old pattern of Jacob’s intercession. Three, he did not go to a mountain to pray. Four, Solomon did not observe a seven-day fasting. Those who do not understand the truthfulness of God’s word think the only way they can receive from God is by subjecting themselves to a rigorous programme of fasting. Five, he did not doubt God or question His faithfulness. Six, he did not delay and wait for a better mood. Seven, he did not keep quiet in assumption that God knew his needs.

Solomon asked wisely and “the speech pleased the Lord.” Two, he asked promptly. Those who hear God’s word, but delay to pray until they get home should learn from him. Three, he prayed humbly. Four, he asked directly. Five, he asked freely. He did not hide anything in his heart. Thus, there was a connection between him and God. Six, he asked boldly, but not rudely. He asked confidently, with faith and assurance. Seven, he asked simply. His words were not complicated.

This same request was given to other people in the scripture. Elisha, for instance, asked for the embodiment of all blessings when he requested a double portion of his master’s spirit. Sadly, some people who do not understand their privilege in Christ limit their request to minor things. Our prayer should always be centred on things that will profit us in this life and in eternity. Christ assures every believer: “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
