Prayer That Prevails – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
12 June 2022 | 2:44 am

Our prayers must be based on the mercy of the Lord, not on feelings if we must get speedy answers. We must appreciate His kindness and greatness. When we pray, we must display humility before the gracious God.

The Lord appreciates our humility and not our merit or deservedness when we appear before Him. Humility in our motives, thoughts and minds grants our answer to our prayers.

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." So-called believers who go about with pride must submit themselves to the Lord, show honour and glorify Him for the privileges He grants them when they approach Him in prayer.

We should also ask for wisdom to fulfil God's purpose. Wisdom is very broad; it applies to and is required in every area of life. Thus, Solomon requested "an understanding heart to judge (the) people, (and) discern between good and bad."

As believers, we must focus our prayers on getting the wisdom that will help us accomplish God's purpose for our lives. "Take heed to the ministry, which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it," Colossians 4:17. Our prayers must be devoid of selfish motives. "And seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not." Unfortunately, most people seek their promotion, honour, benefit, and “not the things which are Jesus Christ’s."

There must be liberation and cleansing from covetousness and all other forms of sin that make our prayer potent. Our prayer, spiritual lives, request and conversation should "be without covetousness." We should display a Christlike attitude towards our enemies. It is unscriptural for any believer to pray for the death of his or her enemies because God is not willing that anyone should perish. "But I say unto you which hear, love your enemies, do good to them which hate you." We should ask for something purposeful to fulfil the will of God, judge and lead His people aright.

God wants every believer to fulfil His condition in order to possess great blessings through answered prayers. "And if thou wilt walks in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments…." The first step towards this is to get saved and live a life that confirms you as a child of God. Then you pray through for a sanctification experience and receive a new heart to love and keep God’s commandments. "And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God."

The instruction God gave Solomon was to walk as "David did walk." But for believers today, we are to walk as the Son of David, Jesus Christ our Lord, and follow His example. "He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." When we obey the word of God, pray according to His will and rely on His promises, we will enjoy "length of days, and long life, and peace."

Christ's Power To Cleanse From Sin – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
19 June 2022 | 3:55 am

Sin disqualifies man from fellowship with God. It brings defilement and reproach. The sins that the Lord mentioned in this text can be classified into four categories such as inward sins, outward sins, secret sins and common sins. The inward sins are those that other people may not see. They are sins that only you know about. They include evil thoughts, wrong motives, passion and pride, hatred and prejudice. Outward sins are sins that almost everybody can notice when you commit them. They are sins like murder, theft, blasphemy (malicious speeches meant to belittle the majesty, glory, persons, attributes and honour of God).

Secret sins are sins done under the cover of darkness, away from the prying eyes of people. They include such sins as adultery and fornication. Common sins are sins that almost everybody commits. They are sins that people don’t seem to see as a big deal when they commit them. These include false witness, lying, deception, suppression of the truth, and such like. But “these are the things which defile a man."

Involvement in any of these sins defiles a man and necessitates cleansing by the blood of Jesus. There is wonder-working power in the precious blood of the Lamb to cleanse, purge and purify a sinner from the guilt and burden of sins. To be cleansed from the defilements of inward, outward, secret or common sin, you need to repent of your sins and surrender your life totally to the Lord Jesus. To be kept from going back to the sin repented of and confessed, you need the constant application and obedience to the word of God. The blood washes you clean; the word keeps you clean.

There is no cleverness or ingenuity of man that can take a sinner, defiled by sin into heaven. The seed of corruption is from within. The very source of evil is the heart of man. If your heart is evil, your actions will be sinful. If your language is corrupt, your heart was first corrupt. If your behaviour is bad, it is an evidence that your heart is rotten. Thoughts precede action. Evil thoughts are the fountain of all other evils.

Those who appear innocent and righteous outwardly, and like the Pharisees, dress, talk and behave like Christians, may still be inwardly dirty and defiled in God’s sight. When a person is corrupt, his thoughts, words and actions will not be normal. The propensity to do evil will be the driving force of his life. Nothing can stop him from going downhill.

Sinners go down the slope of conflict and trouble because that’s what they are used to. Sin defiles, corrupts and makes a sinner guilty in the sight of God. Defilement is referred to, in many Old Testament passages as abomination. To have fellowship or remain in fellowship with God, we must turn away from things that defile or corrupt, such as envy/jealousy, malice, bitterness – anger, wrath/hatred, covetousness, pride, murmuring/gossiping, lust – evil desire, evil passion between men and women, evil thoughts, unbelief, evil imagination, evil association, wickedness, injustice, and attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to Satan. Whatever the nature of defilement, there is cleansing in the blood of Jesus. But there must first, be a realisation of one’s sinfulness before there can be redemption and reconciliation.

Christ's Power To Cleanse From Sin – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
26 June 2022 | 2:37 am

To be forgiven and cleansed from moral pollution and unrighteousness, we must confess and forsake our sins. We must pray the penitent’s prayer and be cleansed from the sin that has defiled us.

Confession precedes cleansing. If God is going to cleanse, forgive and make us whiter than snow, then, we must confess our sins. God will not forgive or cleanse unconfessed sins. It is the broken and contrite heart that receives pardon, salvation and restoration from God. Confession and forsaking of sin go together. Where there is deep grief and sorrow for sin, there will be no continued attachment to that same sin. If you hate something, you will not remain attached to it.

Victory over sin with a transparent life will follow acceptable confession and prayer. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." The Lord wants genuine and sincere confession. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up" into forgiveness and a relationship with Him. You may be a believer, but like Isaiah, if there are some things in your life that God is not happy with, things that you will not want those close to you to know about, pray for cleansing from such habits.

Christ has promised to cleanse us from sin and His promise is backed up by His power. The Lord did not promise what He is not willing to do. What He has promised may seem unattainable, but He is able to perform them. Hence, we should not stagger at the promise of God through unbelief. Like Abraham, we should be strong in faith believing that He will perform what He has promised – total cleansing and freedom from sin.

God wants us to be holy, humble, gentle, tender and obedient to His Word. Hardness of the heart hinders implicit obedience to the Word of God. But He says: "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh."

The blood of Jesus is able to cleanse, purge and purify us, and enable our lives to be well-pleasing in His sight. God has the power; all we need to do is to submit and surrender unto Him for cleansing. If we are not cleansed or living the victorious Christian life, it shows that we have not claimed the promise, trusted the Lord, relied on His promise or received the power that is able to break the influence of sin in our lives. To get to heaven, our sins must be purged and cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Then, we accept the sacrifice Christ has made for our redemption, make Jesus our Lord and Saviour and receive the power to live a righteous life.

Christ-like Obedience – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
03 July 2022 | 3:06 am

Among the many remarkable things about the Lord Jesus Christ, one stands out the most. It is His willing, constant and consistent obedience to the heavenly Father. The Almighty God wanted the ultimate price to be paid for the sin of the whole world. Only one sacrifice fits this bill, and this is in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. He volunteered to satisfy this Divine demand. By so doing, He “became obedient unto (the point of) death… (at) the cross," by laying down His life for the redemption of humanity.

In the same way, therefore, believers were admonished: “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."

The Lord wants sincere, scriptural, sanctified obedience that emanates from a Christ-like heart; obedience that makes us give all we have to Him in honour and appreciation for the gift of redemption. This is the kind of obedience that is acceptable to the Almighty God.

Sadly, there are people today who manifest superficial obedience. This is because they are afraid of rebuke and punishment or perhaps, they want to be in the good books of the society. This type of obedience is unacceptable to the Lord. If we claim to be followers of Christ, then, we must portray through obedience to the Lord, a pleasing and submissive mind.

Our self-esteem, our standing in the eyes of people of the world, usually stands in the way genuine acts of obedience to the Lord. This is the reason He wants us to shun all strife and vainglory. “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Proud people look down on others and never see anything good in them.

We cannot achieve success without the effort of other people. Yet, seeking the advantage, happiness, joy and progress of others is only possible when we have the mind of Christ, and not carnal minds like Lucifer, Saul and Absalom possessed.

Christ's mind was evident in the way He poignantly approached His crucifixion and death. This was the only way Christ was going to bring salvation to mankind, link them with God and eventually, grant them to heaven, in the after-life. Christ was positive about what promised to be a most agonising experience.

For instance, He talked about His suffering as being “lifted up.” He was in a sense, therefore, saying that those who have the mind of Christ should see everything from His perspective. All the labour and suffering for the sake of the kingdom of God would be seen as nothing since they would bring sinners to salvation.

When we have the mind of Christ, regardless of whatever reproach and persecution we may face, we would maintain a Christ-like disposition and learn obedience, meekness, gentleness, humility, submission, perseverance and steadfastness. This is often impossible without deliberately seeking God for the recreation of our hearts. Having been saved, we must strive for the second work of grace, which is sanctification of the heart.

When this happens, God puts His laws “into (our) hearts” and writes them “in (our) minds…” It becomes easier for the Spirit to control us from within, and influence us to obey the word of God and do His will. This is because we now have enough grace, gift, power, knowledge and revelation in our hearts. “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” If the Lord takes away our carnal hearts and gives us Christ-like hearts, we will obey Him like Christ.

Christ-like Obedience – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

[FILES] Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

The most unfortunate thing is that many people choose to be incorrigible and stiff-necked. They tread the well-worn perilous path of disobedience to God, which best exemplifies their carnal mind, with all seriousness. "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit the things of the spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

The carnal mind is stubborn, rebellious and always in disagreement with God. It rejects control, correction, counsel or directive from heaven, the scriptures and Christ. Therefore, those with carnal minds have a propensity towards evil and cannot be "subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be…they that are in the flesh cannot please God."

Besides, carnal people do not readily accept correction. They always have an excuse and give seemingly good reasons for their bad conduct. They are intelligent enough to disobey God, but not submissive enough to obey the Lord. Although they are responsible for their disobedience, they always shift the blame to others. The first King of Israel, Saul, best displayed these attributes when Samuel accused him of failing to obey the voice of the Lord.

In reality, disobedience, whatever the excuse one may give, is linked with a mind that rejects God. People with carnal, unregenerate minds are not born again. If they were born again at all before, they have now walked back or backslidden from their earlier commitment and consecration to the Lord. They do not obey or retain God in their knowledge; they love to "do those things which are not convenient." Their liberty, happiness and desires conflict with that of other people that love the Lord, and they “walk in the vanity of their mind."

In order to avoid the perilous end of those who reject Christ, sinners and backsliders must repent and believe in the Lord for salvation. Whatever they offer to the Lord in worship or service will only amount to “the sacrifice of the wicked (which) is abomination…” until the heart or mind is transformed through the spiritual experience of sanctification. After salvation, the converted persons must also seek the second work of grace to be accomplished in their lives. This is a spiritual operation through which the Lord purifies and takes away all the carnality of the heart. This is what enables them to show priestly, steadfast obedience to the Lord through their crucified mind.

The crucified mind is priestly, steadfast and obedient to the Lord who now lives in him and motivates everything he does. As priests unto the Lord, we “offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God,” and are devoted and steadfast unto Him in obedience. We become “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that (we) should shew forth the praises of him who hath called (us) out of darkness into his marvellous light."

Carnality, depravity or the old man cannot now rule over us because the second work of grace has been accomplished in our lives. This experience makes us peculiar and different from the people of the world. We also “live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved (us), and gave himself for (our)” transformation. Transformed, we now receive “the word (of God) with all readiness of mind,” and go forth with new grace and strength, as well as the mind of Christ to declare the totality of the gospel message to all that are in our community.

Beware of deceivers – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

These are perilous times of the last days. The last days refer to the period between the first and second coming of Christ.

In view of this, John the Beloved warns every believer to remain in the faith and be committed to the truth till the end. He reveals the soon and sudden coming of Christ and the signs that will herald the great event.

Regarding the last days, the Holy Spirit speaks expressly (1 Timothy 4:1,2), the Scriptures state explicitly (2 Timothy 3:1, 2), the society shows externally (2 Timothy 3:1-5), the scoffers scorn expectedly (2 Peter 3:3-7) and His servants speak extensively (Deuteronomy 4:30; 31:29; Ezekiel 38:16; Daniel 10:14; Jude 1:17,18) about its nearness and signs.

Among the signs will there be preachers who are influenced and possessed by the spirit of the Antichrist. They will serve as forerunners and prepare for the full manifestation of their master. Since the coming of the Lord is imminent, believers must be watchful, prayerful and live in holiness. They must not lose sight of the fact that in these last days, the Antichrists pose a mortal danger to all in the world, especially believers in the Lord.

In this divinely inspired treatise, the Apostle John reveals the emergence of the "antichrist" in the last days. This personality is referred to in the Bible as "the son of perdition," the "man of sin," and the "king of fierce countenance," who will oppose Christ, blaspheme His name and try to change the plans of God. He will outlaw the worship of God and sorely oppress the children of Israel.

However, "even now are there many antichrists." These are backsliders who became reprobates, degenerated into apostates and graduated to become antichrists. They are opposed to Christ and the truth of the scriptures.

"And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ comes in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." These forerunners of the Antichrist operate by his spirit, influence and power. They are antichrists because they are deceivers who oppose and distort the truth of the gospel. They misinterpret the scriptures and doctrines of Christ. They are hostile to the salvation that comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

They are wolves in sheep's clothing and motivated by the spirit of the Antichrist. They preach and spread the errors and damning lies of Satan. While many see them as Christ's servants, they are actually working against Him. Characteristically, antichrists deny Christ (2 Peter 2:1), desert the church (1 John 2:19) and deceive Christians (1 John 2:26).

Beware of deceivers – Part 2
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

Pastor W.F. Kumuyi

Those who will make it past the damning deception and cunning craftiness of the anti-Christ must remain devoted to God and refuse to buckle under the strong influence of what would become prevalent deceit. This is why the Lord wants believers to "abide" in the truth that they have learnt.

All children of God have the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit who inspires them to recognise the truth and enables them to live by it. Since the Holy Spirit ably teaches "all things" that are required to please God and make heaven, believers do not need erroneous and misleading literature of false prophets and teachers. We can only be identified as Christ's disciples when we "continue in (His) word."

Equipped with the knowledge of the truth from the Bible, believers know enough that will take them to heaven. So, we must refrain from those who have the spirit of anti-Christ, and abide in the truth we have already learnt. "Let the word of Christ richly dwell in you in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord…"

Salvation results in devotion to Christ and departure from deceivers and anti-Christ. The grace of God keeps those who are genuinely saved in the truth. Those who depart from the truth do not abide in Christ, grace and salvation. Denying Christ in doctrine, character and lifestyle before the world will result in being lost forever.

Backsliders who do not promptly return to the Lord will eventually be overwhelmed by the spirit of the anti-Christ and be lost. But for the believer, the Holy Spirit of God who shields and preserves him/her from error indwells in him/her and acts as a built-in lie detector, as well as prepares us for our destiny when Christ comes again in these last days.

"And now, little children, abide in him; that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming." The scripture reveals that the secret of continual victory, fellowship with the Lord and confidence at Christ's coming is abiding in Him. To partake in the rapture of saints, which is imminent, the believer is called to readiness "Now."

The uniform teaching of the scripture is that the coming of the Lord will be sudden and unannounced. This requires constant readiness on the part of all believers because, "when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, (it is our readiness that will make us) also appear with Him in glory." Jesus Christ is coming again.

As we await His coming, we must abide in Him and remain faithful. He will soon appear and only those who are made righteous through His shed blood and preserved by faith in Him will be received in glory. We are admonished to "hold fast" to our conviction and not allow deceivers to distract or shift our focus from Jesus Christ. "But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."

Vigilance Against Temptation – Part 1
By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi
31 July 2022 | 2:31 am

Pastor W.F. Kumuyi

Christ warned His disciples to "watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation." He was preparing them for the glory ahead because He knew that they would carry on with the work and ministry He had started. While the disciples thought it was a warning for that moment, Jesus was referring to being watchful throughout their lives. This would enable them overcome all trials, troubles and temptation until they get to heaven.

Although Christ was referring directly to His disciples, it is also a personal warning to every believer to be vigilant. Watching is keeping our minds alert. While we watch, we must also pray for divine strength to overcome the tempter’s wiles. Unfortunately, there are people like Simon Peter who raised their self-confidence above the Saviour. Such people must "take heed lest (they) fall." God moderates our temptation. He is faithful and will not "suffer (us) to be tempted above that (we) are able; but will with the temptation also make a way for escape that (we) may be able to bear it." Whatever happens, His sustaining grace will see us through.

Temptation is real and common to all: sinners and saints, young and old, rich and poor. Even the Saviour was tempted. Temptation is enticement or invitation to do evil. It comes through what we see, interaction with other people, flattery or offer of pleasure while the consequential pain, peril or perdition is hidden. Satan recruits those he has tempted and conquered to tempt others.

But we can overcome tempters and temptresses by faith in Christ and the word, which we have heard and believed. The practical, purposeful and positive use of the word enables us to defeat the devil. Therefore, we must be active in quoting the word during temptation and flee from it.

Believers' watchfulness against temptation and sin should be constant and not occasional. "Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Temptation comes to everyone. Just as God is no respecter of persons, so is Satan in bringing temptation to everyone. The same way we secure and watch over our precious earthly possessions, we must watch over our souls, salvation and eternal inheritance, which are worth more than earthly possessions. Those who are not watchful are tricked and defeated by the tempter.

As believers, we must, one, watch at the gate of Eden’s habitation. Adam and Eve should have been watchful because of posterity. Two, watch over our birthright. Esau lost his birthright because he failed to watch. Three, watch from the high gate of greed and covetousness as Achan. Four, watch against the lust of Samson. He was not watchful against his desire for pleasures with Delilah. Five, watch against the inordinate ambition of Absalom. Satan used his deadly ambition against him. Six, watch against the propensity for lust as with Solomon. Seven, watch against corruption and avarice. Prosperity does not replace purity in our lives and cannot take anyone to heaven.

Satan knew that he has lost his place in heaven, and he does not want anyone to get there. Therefore, we must not get into conversation with him. We must beware of anyone who confronts and contradicts the word of God, ascribes wrong intention to God and promotes idolatry in any form. When the tempter becomes your friend, he creates a mental picture in your mind, which he uses to conquer you. This makes the conquered person a tool in the hand of Satan to make the nearest person to him or her fall.
