So, here are the things the minister said

1.
He said the sum of $10 billion is needed yearly for the next ten years to revive the nation’s power sector and nip in the bud the challenges bedeviling it.

“For this sector to be revived, the government needs to spend nothing less than 10 billion dollars annually in the next 10 years

That amounts to 100 billion dollars over 10 years, 10 billion a year, in keeping with the estimate from Arise in 2022, although they stated it was over 20 years.

Also, Nairametrics put it at 100bn, though timing was vague from them

2.
“This is because of the infrastructure requirement for the stability of the sector. But the government cannot afford that. And so we must make this sector attractive to investors and to lenders.

“So, for us to attract investors and investment, we must make the sector attractive, and the only way it can be made attractive is that there must be commercial pricing.

“If the value is still at N66 and the government is not paying subsidy, the investors will not come. But now that we have increased the tariff for A Band, there are interests being shown by investors,” he said

Above kind of makes sense.

Remember that the NERC boss put our cost reflective tarrif at 184 naira per kwh. I doubt that investors would be showing interest with a cost reflective tarrif being paid by only 20% of the populaiton, but we shall see..

3.

3.The entire sector will be grounded if we don’t increase the tariff. With what we have now in the next three months, the entire country will be in darkness if we don’t increase tariffs.

Remember that government needs a subsidy of at least 3.7 trillion naira to pay to ensure that power is sufficent. And they can't afford it (even if they cut government costs, it still won't measure up...and they ought to really).

Ill leave readers who don't want to read with this summary of the power sector issues

1.Solving the liqudity crunch in the power sector
Below image is from a page from the report.

2. Cost reflective tarrif as panacea for Nigeria's electricity woes.

In 2013, Nigeria decided to privatise the sector. But 10 years after, the expected yields from the privatisation of the NESI have been hampered, in part, by the inability of the Distribution Companies (Discos) to charge cost-reflective tariffs.

As a result, all operators in the NESI value chain have been affected, effectively constraining investment in the downstream, comprising the Discos; midstream, where the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) holds sway and upstream segment, comprising the gas producers and Generation Companies (Gencos).

With such constraints, although total national installed generation capacity stands at 13,000MW, Nigeria barely manages to get a third of that to where power is needed. The rest is stranded
.

Thus, what this means is that there’s a misalignment of the entire value chain from gas to consumers. Without cost-reflective tariffs, the federal government has been forced to subsidise the real cost of electricity

Re: Adebayo Adelabu: Accept Electricity Tariff Hike Or Face Total Blackout by nairalanda1(m): 11:42am On Apr 30
The quick and dirty summary of the above is

1.Power in Nigeria needs a lot of money for fixing

2.Investment and money inflows are being hindered by lack of cost reflective pricing for power.

3.Changing the lack of appropriate pricing means more income and more investment, and eventually improvement

As seen in the GSM sector.

If there's anything like a referendum for those Britico to come back, I'll be among the people to gladly support the idea as we have fantastically failed to govern ourselves properly since 1960.

However though, the British are partly responsible for the problems we've been facing since, for having lumped together nationalities with very dissimilar political & cultural backgrounds to form this dysfunctional entity Nigeria.

I think kicking out the British was a big mistake, Nigeria is ran by fools.

If the money were stolen and government is aware, what have they done to recover the stolen money. If they recover stolen money and reinvest, they won't need to saddle citizens with so much burden. Are they not part of the same people who have stolen the money?

Avoid it been stolen than thinking of getting it recovered...With a good defense in court, such case can linger for 10yrs or more and they aren't foolish not to jump into the available party to discuss a soft landing.
Electricity ,Water Board, Sewage and all should be privatize and thr government should focus on increasing all wages... The money used in paying Subsidy for all this should be added to workers salaries, moreover the Subsidy paid are inflated by certain individuals.
most Waterboard usually spend nothing less than 200Million monthly in water production, all this are subsidized by the government and certain individuals are only just stealing and not providing the needed services, while the end users are just wasting the treated water...Subsidy should be removed in all sectors ,if you ask me.

The Minister of Darkness on the beat!

It has become obvious that this fellow is a square peg in a round hole!

He knows little to nothing about the office that he is occupying.

He has become so overwhelmed by the demands of the office that he thinks the only solution to electricity crisis in the country is merely to increase tariffs.

What a misfit he is!

Expect nothing from this dunderhead!

That's a shettimanic order from the fake bishops of the Agbado diocese. This is where the privatisation of electricity distribution has landed Nigeria. Private refineries will be like this.

It is so abnormal that their keyboard warriors see nothing wrong with the administration. They will rather raise one topic about Obi than to complain about their paymasters.
when we talk of import issue stop bringing Obi into it. People dey complain of light u are here bringing Obi name here. Is Obi d solution to Nigeria? Nah people like u makes Obi dey get more enemies. Any little thing like this u go mention Obi. If tinubu fans dey talk of Obi, nah u people cause it

I am not surprise at all, the caliber of person leading an organization determines the rest of the leaders that will be in his team, this man is just a clueless dumb foolish slowpoke, Fashola came for 8 good years and did nothing, but talk, talk and talk, here we have another Yoruba demon again, i thought they said Yorubas are very educated? where did all these morons came from? this idiot better resign or be kicked out, how did the senate even approved of his candidacy as a minister? Oga you want to spend $10B every year for the next ten years to make electricity stable? $100m? when we have enough gas, sunlight, and wind to get alternative electricity? you must be the biggest political thief to have been appointed since 1999. it used to cost $1m to construct 1 kilometer of gas line to generate about 50mega watts of electricity, so Oga thief do your math and explain why we will need to cough out a whooping $10b in ten years to sustain electricity. Go ahead and shut down the nations electricity and see who is going to suffer, we are used to the light issues, this statement alone shows how clueless you are, a lot of persons including me is longer subscribing to digital television, i am enjoying my Netflix and the social media. shut it down lets see who lose, but remember to shut down the Aso villa also, slowpoke. you don't have electricity, you don't have petrol you are here gapping mouth that you want to shut down the little we are managing, must you increase tariff to inflict pain on Nigerians to proof your foolishness? wetin we do una sef?

Don’t threaten us with total blackout.
Some Nigerians are experiencing and enduring it already.
You want people to pay more for what they do not enjoy.
Thievery of the highest order.
Ordinary poor Nigerians must always be the ones to pay for the ineffectiveness and cluelessness of the ruling elite class.
