Niger Bridge may collapse soon – UNIZIK VC Written by Vanguard Thursday, 19 November 2009 10:09 The Vice-Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Boniface Egboka, has said that the Niger Bridge at Onitsha, Anambra State could collapse any time from now. Egboka spoke in Awka on Wednesday, as the Senate Committee on Works asked the Federal Government to take full responsibility for the construction of the second Niger Bridge at Onitsha. The vice-chancellor, who addressed journalists at the council hall of the university, said that as a hydro-geologist, he felt really sad about the state of the bridge. “The Niger Bridge is carrying the load it was not designed to carry. It is calamitous. It is ecologically distressing. There should be a situation where heavy duty vehicles do not stand on the bridge. The two checkpoints should be dismantled, while stalled vehicles on the bridge should immediately be towed away,” he pleaded. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Julius Ucha, has asked the Federal Government to take full responsibility for the construction of the second Niger Bridge. Ucha, who led members of the committee on the inspection of the first bridge in company with Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, said the National Assembly had appropriated N4bn for the second Niger Bridge project in the current budget. He regretted that nothing had been done about the project. The Federal Government had awarded a contract for the project in 2007, conscripting the Anambra and Delta State governments as joint financiers. But the two state governments rejected the conscription, saying they were not consulted and that they did not have the financial muscle to support the project. Ucha, who also decried the state of the terrible state of federal roads in the South-East, said appropriate sanctions should be meted out to failed contractors. http://nigerialatestnews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=265:niger-bridge-may-collapse-soon-unizik-vc&catid=1:&Itemid=20

The destruction attached to its collapse will be unimaginably catastrophic. May God Almighty save us from all natural and man created disasters in Jesus' name. But then our government should jump into swift action to avert disaster. |
