I am an Urhobo from Okpara Inland(Agbon Clan) your piece may have been an eye opener to more research and fact finding about our lineage but i think the theory that we migrated from Egypt is not in anyway right i would rather go with the myth that we migrated from Benin and some part from Igbo but the closeness in language between the Urhobos and their Benin counterpart makes me believe Urhobos and the Bini may have a common heritage and likewise the Igbo speaking tribe judging from dancing step to music. This is an attempt to trace the origin of the urhobo people with... 1. A small amount of names and things that sound alike and, 2. A big hot pile of horse crap. I would like to see the guy that actually sat down and started pulling names out his nose for those royal lineages. Example of a corrupt lineage. Sanchez01: @Efewestern: This thread is a kind of pseudo-history. The Op is not the first to venture into this waters. We have the likes of Dr. Charles Osume who wrote a book titled The Okpe People, as well as Bobson Gbinije, among others. Their argument is that Urhobos originate directly from Egypt. While the theory is plausible, it is inherently flawed because all Urhobo myths, legends and historians trace our origin to Aka (Benin) or Ife (in the case of some clans). I only appreciate this thread because it foregrounded Urhobo people. However, everyone should be wary of its content and regard it as purely pseudo-history. Urhobos are from Udo in Ancient Benin and we arrived our current lands at different migratory waves. Some Urhobo clans came from Isoko and some Isoko clans came from Urhobo. That is the standard academic history of Urhobo people. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Sanchez01: Your position that the Urhobos migrated from the old Benin kingdom, is more apt bro. Urhobo didn't migrate from Sudan or Egypt. If in doubt, why is it that majority of the Urhobos still refer to Benin as their ancestral home. Hence when a new oba is to take the throne, all mordern tribe that was part of the ancient kingdom send emissaries to identify with their ancient root. Most part of delta up to onisha, ifon and owo in ondo state, and the ishekiries all send representatives. The only part I am not sure of, is the ijaws . I don't know where they migrated from, but I know they are scattered all over Nigeri and their language is very very different from other Nigeria languages. From the core north around the lake Chad to the far west of the seme border in Lagos state, to the far south eastern part of akwa ibom and some part of the igbo land. The funniest thing is that thy speak the same language with different little or no difference as a result of dialects and inter marriage between them and their host communities. That's just my take. 4 Likes 1 Share |

jchioma: Nothing is factual about this. It is simply the Op's interpretation of history. What is generally accepted by everyone is that Urhobos originated from Aka (Benin). Some clans like Okpe claim Ife (Yoruba) ancestry but nothing connects us to Egypt directly. What you see here is a case of "You see exactly what you want to see". 2 Likes 1 Share |

marcondo13: Okpe's Charles Osume linked Okpe Kingdom to Egypt and many Okpes accepted it because the result was that Okpes are not Urhobos. I do not presume that you subscribe to Osume's thought but you and I know that this Egyptian connection is farfetched. I have seen many pseudo-historians attempt to link their tribes to ancient Egypt and their attempts are simply laughable. If you say Urhobo's roots are diverse, I'd agree because the same applies to ALL ethnicities of the world. We are not one people. We only became one by virtue of common borders, values and heritage. However, to say all Urhobos are from Egypt is a far stretch and should be left at what is it: "pseudo-history"! 2 Likes |

Sanchez01:Urhobo migrated from "AKA" not "EDO". At the time Urhobo left, the Kingdom and land of the Ogisos was then known as "AKA". The terms "EDO" and "BENIN" are recent names which came into use only after the collapse of the Ogiso Dynasty and the subsequent emergence of the Oba Dynasty. The collapse of the "OGISO DYNASTY" and its replacement with "OBA DYNASTY" brought a change of name from "AKA" to "EDO". In fact, the name EDO was believed to have been introduced by Oba Ewuare the Great to immortalized a certain servant who saved his life during his struggle to ascend the Benin royal throne. 3 Likes 1 Share |

IFNOTGOD: Omoni me! Mevwe ohwo r'Okpara o! Mavor? Urhu vor oyin vwon nurhe? Don't take this theory too serious. Ihwo r'Urhobo vren no vi Aka oke r'Ogiso! Urhobos are from Benin, specifically Udo, and we left in different waves. Avwraka (Abraka) was the last clan to leave Benin, at the time of Oba Egbeka. Urhobos have no Igbo connection as well, like you hinted. However, many Urhobo migrants passed through Igboland on their way to our present locale and we picked up one or two things from them as they too picked from us. Apart from that, some Urhobo communities share borders with Ukwuani towns and picked up some things from them, as they did from us as well. So, Oniovo, do not take this piece too serious. 2 Likes |

Afam4eva: That man in question wasn't a pure Urhobo. He's half Urhobo, Half Itsekiri, thus the reason for the Benin/Togo showing up in his dna result, which indicates his Itsekiri (Yoruboid) ancestry. I doubt if a pure Urhobo person's ancestry would yield that same result, until we see one. |
Re: The Origin Of Urhobo People by fratermathy(m): 6:06pm On Jun 05, 2017 |
bigfrancis21: Until we see one, we can't be too sure but I believe that the DNA test will reveal a diversity of roots because some Urhobo clans are peopled by those of non-Bini descent, notably Ijaws, Itsekiri and Igbo. However, the majority may be traced to Bini roots, and Bini DNA may be traced to Dahomey, from where many Yorubas are believed to have originated from. |

scionofurhobo:Story for the kids. Igbos and Ijaws are not related in any way. Igbos might be related to Urhobo, Beni, Isoko and Ishan but not with Ijaw. Most Igbos are fair while Ijaws are dark in complexion. Intermarriage, trading and living in the same geographical area do not entail relationship and same origin as you were trying to put here. Igbos and other groups in south south and Benue state migrated from east while the Ijaws migrated from sierra leone. Totally different from the rest. 1 Like |

ivolt:i wonder how they ignore all the similarities among neighbouring ethnic groups and jump far away to the middle east to find some little trace of semblance, for petes sake most languages have some similar words, even if the o.p checks some distant languages like japanese he would def find a couple of similar words to urhobo. The humam tongue has a limited amount of sounds, like the english alphabets, which is shared among all languages, thus there's always the possibility of finding similar words among distant unrelated ethnic groups. 7 Likes 1 Share |

B2mario: Urhobo, Bini, Ishan and Isoko have more to do with Yoruba than Igbo, actually. The colour of skin is not a yardstick for knowing the origin of a people. Africans are not fair or white. Some Igbos may have acquired a lighter tone over time due to "contact" with Europeans. 1 Like |

though as an urhobo, father from okpara inland and mother from okwagbe. i have gone through many write up about the origin of my people, this one sound seducive but still difficult to say yes to it. i have been told AKA is my ancestral home, but some of the names the op mention are right, which throw me off balance. seems the binis moved down from Egypt along with some of our ancestors, because we both bear some similar names like efe, ese, e.t.c just like what some one said, it may just be one of those pseudo-history. all in all in might later turn out to be true. urhobo wado, isi wado, urhobo isi kokori mesiaguare |
