No fewer than 8,000 trucks conveying imported goods into the country have been stranded at Seme border owing to the establishment of a new order of operations and stringent clearing process. https://guardian.ng/news/8000-nigeria-bound-trucks-stranded-at-seme-border/amp/ |

It was also gathered that the cargo scanners at Seme were not in use, forcing the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to adopt the slow and time-consuming 100 per cent examination. Nigeria always finds a way to complicate simple issues. The EU donated a cargo scanner but its not in use because the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority hasn't approved it. You would think this would be sorted out before opening the post. Investigation equally revealed that the new facility, situated on the Nigerian side of the border, is yet to be completed, causing traders some inconveniences in the transit and clearing process. Whats left to be done? 1 Like |

All these can be sorted out by opening up the eastern ports 2 Likes |

aolawale025: Be sensible for once, we are talking about the Nigeria-Seme land border. |

Blue3k: This situation started sometime before the presidential elections, there's still no remedy at this point. While it takes less than one day to clear customs at other West African points, it takes close to one month now at the Nigerian axis. We just keep moving backwards. |

Connoisseur: Oh well till Nigeria gets serious about cutting red tape and illegal checkpoints the problem wont go away. I've read about Customs and NPAs lack of cargo scanners alot. It seems they like better this way to extort people. Other than that I dont see why they would make their jobs more difficult. If our neighbors do in a day what takes us a month. We should just copy. There's no need to reinvent the wheel. |

Connoisseur:He is being sensible. The congestion is Lagos is due to all clearing being done in Lagos. There is no competition for clearing revenue. If other regions had active functional ports, all this would not be happening. Have u been to Seme border? The Nigerian end is woeful. So is the Benin end. If you check the Benin-Togo border, you will wonder why the contrast. Nigeria no send, so dem no send too. 1 Like |

tiwiex: He is not sensible because no one can create land borders. Its a geographical issue. Do we have to route our cargo from Mali, Senegal or Burkina Faso to Delta State or Calabar through an imaginary border. Emphasis should be on how to make movement easier as it used to be prior 2019 elections |
Re: 8,000 Nigeria-bound Trucks Stranded At Seme Border by Connoisseur(m): 10:58am On Mar 28, 2019 |
Blue3k: I witnessed this first hand because I had two trucks that passed there recently. I think it's a decision by Benin Republic officials that led to this logjam, while the Nigerian officials accepted such policy is the question. Scanner issue has been there a long time but has not affected operations. |

Warship:I understand his point but question the relevance. The Seme land border caters for imports mostly agro through the West African corridor. If it were to be Apapa congestion, I could understand his point better. Meanwhile, where did people get this assumption that the ports in the east are closed? |

It seems Amaechi is inspecting the border post today. Hopefully he does something after seeing problem with his own eyes.
