A lot has been heard about this popular Eastern Nigeria city which should occupy its place in the committe of cities.

The people of the south east are traditionally hard working. Our zeal and determination for commerce is unquenchable. Young men and women leave school at an early age to engage in all sorts of commercial activities, especially wholesale and retail trading in high capacities.

It is from here we offload hundreds of containers daily and forward goods to all parts of the country and beyond, we have Camerounians, Lagosians and even Niger republic traders coming to Onitsha to buy goods.

I will post lots of pictures about this city as I am in Onitsha now on a working visit.

Please, these pictures are not all good looking as I intend to tell it the way it is, nothing to hide. We should bare all so that the authorities will be pressured into doing what we elected them to do. All Anambrarians and Igbo people should prevail on Peter Obi to do something about Onitsha.

Picture to be posted at night, I will first go back to the site and pay my workers, plus all the other evening activities that sustains social life in Nigeria. Keep cool my people. cheesy

I really would have loved to, but am always in a haste, maybe another day. But the places I passed are the most used, most seen, most accessed places in the city.
I urge all Onitsha residents to join me in telling the story, everyone should post good pictures of this city so as to counter the bad ones in my list. It shall be well with us all.

Lest anyone see me as being uneccessarily hard on this city, maybe because I am not an Anambra man, well.....

Let me start by expressing my respect for the Anambra people. I have not seen any other group of people in this world that are as hard working and progressive minded like the Anambra man. If not for the enterprising spirit of Anambra people, Enugu will not be as beautiful or built up as it is today. Most Anambra big boys own properties in Enugu, choice properties and prominent locations.

Anambra people have millions of millionairs grin yes that is not a joke. But Anambra, unu ana arazi oke na mpe?

I want a robust Onitsha, a well planned Nnewi and a cool capital in Awka. My people in Anambra deserves better than this!

Word!

Spyder you can not just go and take pictures of the bad area without corresponding ones of the good places. That will leave much to desire. So i will suggest until you area fully ready to cover all don't post those pictures cos it will amount to one sided and incomplete job.

You have said it all. I challenge any sub-group in the whole of Africa to come out and tell me they have more harworking people than Ndi-Anambra or thaat they can boast of more millonaires than Anambra. Anambra is homw to the most educated and at the same time the most illiterate people in Igboland. Anambra is the shining light of Ala-Igbo and a state of firsts.

Having said all these things, the truth has to be said about the social and economic well being of Anambra. Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka are the three most important cities but they've all under-performed and that is because Anambra has not being able to give technocrats the opportunity to turn those places into first world cities. I see no reason why Onitsha cannot thump Lagos as the commercial center of Nigeria or even compete with world class commercial and financialcenters such as New York, LOndon and Frankfurt. But first let's vote for someone in the mould of Soludo.

Anambra Kwenu!!

Are we not in a democracy? Lets vote on this.

Option 1. Show it all
Option 2. "Dress the city"

Voting stops by 9pm when pictures comes up. Vote either 1 or 2.

Personally, it will be nice to see from your pictures the reasons why governor Peter Obi and any other governors, that have governed that state in the past and "could" not deliver should be really ashamed of themselves. Throw everything in the open, there should be no room for being economical about the facts anymore, anyone who disagrees should balance or counter it with proof lol!

Now this thread gets to the front page and it carries the title "Is Onitsha the commercial capital of west africa??" Common, is that the purpose of this thread?? Why are the MODS just insensitive at times. People will run here now and start giving reason why JIgawa is the commercial capital thereby defeating the purpose why this thread was opened.

Please kill the idea. This thread is something everyone (Igbos, I mean) will regret in the end as it will derail and gain unnecessary attention. The Yoruba notorious tribalists are waiting on the wings to send you (the thread) to the gallows. There are Igbo forums where you can discuss this without any external interference.

I once heard that Onitsha is the largest market in West Africa. The ranking I got is this:

1. Onitsha
2. ABA
3. Alaba International Market, Lagos.
Re: Onitsha, The Commercial Capital Of West Africa by Emperoh(m): 4:36pm On Jul 27, 2012
I feel Onitsha, for all the revenue it generates for Anambra govt, has not been given priority development.
This is the same for Awka and Nnewi which are, to my reckoning, glorified villages.
Nothing has gone into planning these cities, decongesting the central areas and pushing development to virgin locations
Anambra deserves more than it's getting. Our trader governor has only done what he understands governance to be.
It doesn't end with building roads and equipping schools.

Exposure and experience is not a thing to be taken lightly.
We boast of the skills and resources to make the best cities in the world.
I bet you, Onitsha is even better off now. Imagine as it were in past administrations.

All things being equal, i think we will get it right.
The good thing is that this administration has set standards. No one can go lower and have it cool with ndi Anambra.

I also think that poor development of critical cities are synonymous with states created in and after 1991; in no particular order
Abia, Anambra, Kogi, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Osun, Ekiti to mention a few.
I don't think, as things stand in these cities, some of which i have passed through, they are any better than glorified villages.

Spyder, please post the pictures as it.
What Anambrarians like me will now have to do is to post pictures of other parts of Awka and Anambra in general
With this, we can then make a better, holistic assessment and judgement because for all i know, Onitsha is not the true picture of Anambra state.
But that's about the first city a first time visitor to Anambra by road, will see.
