Obi1kenobi: Don't listen much to opers though I enjoy Pavarotti's renditions but listen to a lot of classical music and it doesn't get better than Beethoven. His Symphony 09 and 05 are the greatest accomplishments in music. Amazing really.

He was the best of his era - the classical era. He has strong challengers in Telemann, Haydn, Molter, and the much-valued Mozart.

For those who are into Romantic and post-Romantic music, then you would be talking about Elgar, Debussy, and Ravel, who are responsible for much of the contemporary classical tunes we know today. Also Phillip Glass. But they all took anointing from the prolific Wagner.

Bach is clearly the outstanding baroque composer of his era, he took baroque music to a new level and opened the door to the classical era.

If you go all the way back to what is commonly called 'early music', but is actually music from the Renaissance (14th and 15th centuries), there are tons of good composers. Byrd, Ockeghem, Palestrina, Michael Praetorius, Tallis, Gaillard . . . so many works from that era are even unaccounted for. Most were religious compositions, the Kyries, Credos, and Glorias.

We should talk about Nigeria's contributions to classical music as well. Surprising, huh? Yes, Nigeria has produced quite a number of talented and well-schooled musicians.

We had composers such as Fela Sowande, Joshua Ozoigwe, Sam Akpabot (the flutist), Akin Euba, Godwin Sadoh, Thomas Ekundayo Phillips, and Laz Ekuweme (whom I think is still alive, not sure). They have a remarkable repetoire of published music.

As a boy, my dad used to make me listen every Sunday evening to Regina Anajemba's Concert Hour on Radio Nigeria 2, now known as Metro FM. This was over a period of 14 years or so, till I left university. I gained a solid appreciation of formal music just by listening to that one-hour program, unfortunately now defunct.

Yes, I am very surprised. Have heard of a Harcourt-Whyte whose music I never experienced, not even sure whether he was a composer or what. No contemporaries? I'm really interested.

Laz Ekwueme is still very much around. He is presently a traditional ruler in Anambra (Oko, I think). He still conducts his Orchestra at the annual FRCN Carol of nine lessons in Abuja. I have also spotted him on a handful of Nollywood movies.

Harcourt Whyte was as Rivers state man who composed virtually all of his pieces in Igbo language. He was a leper and a profound classical composer. His Igbo pieces were always in strict timing, resembling Handel's pattern. Only it was in Igbo. My former Choirmaster was his protege who experienced him 1st hand. Through him i came across a whole lot of Harcourt's compositions.

I have heard the name, but never heard any composition from him. Is there any way one can get access to his work?

Please, I know that this thread is an old one but please, I need some Classical/Opera piece for my Choir and I. I have been using Empire Anthem book. Please, do send as an attachment to Godskingsley@gmail.com. I would also appreciate if I have the video "OPERA CLASS" since my phone can't download it.

Spotify has a great collection but it's a streaming site. Wouldn't want to encourage piracy.

You can use it from anywhere in the world, I'm sure, as long as you have internet connection. You can save the songs you want into a playlist and select the 'available offline' button so that the songs are automatically downloaded to your phone.

What artists do you listen to?

I'm an ardent follower of TSFH and I know a couple of songs from Position Music and Audio Machine. Just discovered ES Posthumus recently and can honestly say I'm in love.
