Forget ancestry it will be betrayal for them not to represent the country that took care of them . One fact is if they were in Nigerian they wont have been where they are. And talking about ancestry for all I care may be if you go like 200 years back half of nigerians ancestor were in another country. Let talk of the future and learn from the past.

i don't actually see anything wrong, if the country actually supports their dream and pushes them forward then its only right they nationalize, Nigeria should invest in the Sport industry, but sadly i just wasted characters saying that because it will never happen.

igbo2011: Look at Christine Ohuruogu and Lawrence Okoye they are of Nigerian ancestry. If Nigeria had more economic opportunities their parents would have stayed in Nigeria and they might have been able to play for the Nigerian Olympic team. We also need to INVEST in the sports industry and we can have more Olympians!!! We need more track and fields, well maintenance football pitches and more state of the art basketball courts. We can start a huge billion dollar sports industry.

Those both are representing Great Britain. Who else is representing other countries?
Hey op stop making it sound as if Nigeria is the worst country in the world. As u have Nigerians representing other countries so do u have nationals of other countries representing other countries. Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose etc have Polish ancestry but rep Germany, Sami Khedira, Mezut Ozil are Turks but play for Germany, Pepe, Deco are Brazillians but play for Portugal, Mauro Camorenesi is Argentine but played for Italy, Zidane, Nasri, Benzema all have Algerian ancestry, Ibrahim Affelay is Moroccan but plays for Holland. If you go to French speaking African countries u will see many of them representing France not to forget Marcel Desaily of Ghana for France, so u see it is not all about Nigeria and BTW outside of Ohuruogu which of does athletes u mentioned have done anything remarkable?

And my kids will NEVER represent another country apart from my ancestry..

Hakeem Olajuwon played for America - but they still refer to him as a Nigerian.. So, he's more of a paid mercenary...

All the ones who represented the UK, are still black Africans when they fill employment forms tomorrow after the olympics - but I'm not here to critique anyone, each to their own..

if they were in nigeria, most of them would have never become that good as we all know how our sport facilities here are.we should be Glad they became so good whatever flag they choose to carry they are still nigerians. And we still have a lot of atletes here in nigerian with so much potential though they may not improve as well untill they find their way out of nigeria unfortunately.
But whatever happens i know that although i may never get to celebrate Nigeria , i know there will always be Nigerian to celebrate.

Hakeem " the dream " Olajunwon made tens of millions of dollars playing in the NBA for Houston Rockets. He was invited to play for US dream team at Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. Hakeem was Nigerian born, but that never reduce his popularity in the US during the 90s. He was on Larry King live talking against Abiola's arrest during Abacha's despotic regime.

Please!! Most of them were probably born there and may have not even visited Nigeria once or they are immigrants of some sort who preferred their immigrant countries to Nigeria. Frankly they are entitled to where they want to represent and it's really no big deal. Nigeria also has athletes of all sorts, we've won medals previously and we will also win in the future to come......like!! Lets get This straight It's not a do or die affair!!!

Most of the people mentioned were born and raised abroad so its no surprised why they play for other countries and can careless for Nigeria. Anyway when it comes to sports it comes down to the individual not the nation. A nation can spend billions of dollars on sport and still fail at the Olympics. Just look at Argentina, they have a huge sporting budget that rivals that of Great Britain but so far they only have 1 Olympic medal(bronze) and on the other hand 3rd world Jamaica has a tiny sports budget with crappy facilities but yet produces the best athletes every Olympics. When it come to sports its the individual training of the individual athletes that matter and not the nation they represent.

Also, those athletes choose to represent other countries because, for most of them, thats the only nation they know. Why should they represent Nigeria when nigeria has no meaning to them. just because they have nigerian blood doesn't mean mentally they are nigerian.

If we were to count all the medals won by Nigerians at this Olympics (whether representing Nigeria or not), what would our position on the medals table be?

That can help us know exactly what we are missing, if we are missing anything at all by not having them compete for us.
Re: Nigerians Representing Other Countries In The Olympics!! by NaijaNaWaa: 8:59pm On Aug 06, 2012
I don't mean to be parochial but you just can't help noticing how Southern Nigeria takes the lead in competitive environments where merit rules and things work. Imagine only one mallam made this long list. Imagine that these athletes had no opportunity of plying their trade in other countries. They would have long been frustrated by a system that breeds and celebrates mediocrity. God bless excellence. Long live Southern Nigeria.

Why is everybody whining about men/women OF NIGERIAN ORIGIN representing other countries. Is it wrong to do so?

I think its pure selfishness and greed to assume and conclude that just because they have Nigerian Heritage, they have a responsibility to represent Nigeria. When these athletes were training 24/7, dreaming big, enduring all the stress and rigor of traning, working multiple jobs, applying for scholarhips up and down, getting their lifes put together, I wonder where all of you were. Now that they are at the top of their game, we have the time to start researching their surname and parental heritage.

Is Barrack Obama representing Kenya?

If His father was Nigerian, I'm sure by now we would have stoned him with our Nigerian Heritage stones and he would be out of the white house. We would have blamed him for all the woes that befall Nigeria just because of what doesnt even concern him.

Many of those listed are actually not Nigerians. That you were born by Nigerian Parents, but bred abroad and lived there all your life does not make you a Nigerian. We can be ofcourse mild to say they hold dual citizenships, etc. What would you all say if it were these foreign bones and muscles that represented Nigeria - if all our homegrown talents were booted out. Wont we be the ones crying cruelity and partiality?

And for those athletes who change their nationalities just for the purpose of pursuing their dream, why cant we look inwards as a nation and ask ourselves what makes them leave. If the American Embassy opens its doors to just about anybody, even the Agberos will apply for American citizenship.

Rather than counting those who at least made it to the Olympics even if on the shoulders of another flag, why dont we ask how many Nigerians did not meet up to expectation in their quest to represent other nations. I know for this one, we would say "good for them". Thats the selfishness and greed again.

Are there not foreigners that live amongst us? do we consider them Nigerians? regardless of the color of their skin, the # of years they have been domiciled in Nigeria, lived, studied and done business in Nigeria, does the Nigerian government consider them Nigerians? do we allow them to have their own Nigerian breathing space?

Mind you, Mr. President Goodluck Jonathan went to bombard Trinidad and Tobago with a 70-member entourage, meanwhile we Nigeria has 53 athletes to represent 150million people at the Olympics. that indeed is the Nigerian dream!

shymmex: Hakeem Olajuwon played for America - but they still refer to him as a Nigerian..

Uh. . .no.

This is almost certainly false. I've had discussions with ordinary oyibos here in America on sports. They have no idea where he's from and a few of them assumed he was originally from Kenya (and this was before Barack Obama was running for president and brought Kenya even more into the imagination/consciousness of westerners than it already was).

The only people that would know he's Nigerian are those that have read that about him specifically in sports magazines or sports reporters/commentators that go out of their way to dig up the personal history and details of each athlete.
Re: Nigerians Representing Other Countries In The Olympics!! by PhysicsQED(m): 9:35pm On Aug 06, 2012
@ SmoothCrim

Dude, stick to what you know (Ghana). Within Nigeria, southerners also dominate sports. It's not about traveling abroad, but about interest in competing at the professional level. Traditional Hausa boxing (dambe) is popular in some parts of the North, but that hasn't translated into anything at the professional level in either boxing or kickboxing for Nigeria.

And most of the bad stereotypes about Nigerians emerged as the country deteriorated under backwards Northern military rule. There are bad stereotypes about other groups or countries around the world but at least many of them have something to balance it out developmentally or in terms of good governance. That said, I think Northerners can excel in sports if they make more of an effort, but they really need to focus on education in the North before even investing heavily into sports. In fact, all parts of Nigeria need to improve in education.
