Attempted Robbery On Arik Air Flight: Suspect & Victim Arrested by yamunla(m): 3:36pm On Aug 10, 2012
Flight crew of Nigeria’s major carrier, Arik Air, were vindicated over constant allegations of stealing passengers money and other valuables, when a passenger was caught stealing another passenger’s N200,000 cash at the weekend.

The male passenger, who was seated in the business class cabin with his victim on flight W3 162 ABV- LOS, Abuja to Lagos, was said to have ransacked his neighbour’s bag on seat 3C and taken the N200,000, during which process he was sighted by another passenger, who immediately asked the victim to check his bag.

The other passenger (victim) quickly checked his bag and found out the sum was missing and he reported to the head of the cabin crew who alerted the captain of the flight.

THISDAY gathered that upon landing the plane at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the captain called the aviation security officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) who promptly arrested the suspect and the owner of the money and took both of them away.

Aviation security later transferred the suspect, the owner of the money, and the exhibit to the domestic wing police station of the airport for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Confirming the incident, a senior security official of FAAN explained that the authority was briefed about the incident and that the matter was taken to the police to handle. “Yes, I got the report that our men arrested the suspect and with his exhibit he was handed over to the police,” the official said.

However, when THISDAY visited the domestic airport police station, the Divisional Police Officer, Fidelia Victor, confirmed the incident but said that she did not have the details, promising that she would have more information to give when she has been briefed.

Another Arik Air source told THISDAY that such incidents were not rare and whenever they happened the cabin crew would be accused by the passengers.

“But this shows that there are passengers whose intention is to come and rob others in the aircraft. This is surprising and to think of the fact that he was in the business class cabin adds to the surprise,” the source added.

THISDAY also learnt that the suspect who was caught in the act did not deny nor resist arrest, but obediently followed the aviation security officials that consequently took him to the police.

i guess this is good news for the airline. My question is who puts that sum of money in a place where someone can easily get access? and was the owner of the money asleep when all this ransacking was going on?

we need to confirm if Omojuwa's Ipad was in a bag checked into the cab or those handled by ARIK staff/NAHCO .

In any case, there are many tricks for handling irate customers'like omojuwa, in Customer Services handbook. ARIK did not deem it necessary to use any of the tricks.

Do they mean they brought the victim in to give a statement coz I don't know why they should arrest him. . . except there is more to the story.

On a different note, I swear I don't think I have seen an article where they ask the Police something and they actually say the know the details. It's always . . ."We don't know the details will get back to you or we have not been informed about this yet" I tell ya, sometimes I wonder what they are good for. . .apart from harassing people, I mean. undecided

Why didnt they name the person since he 'allegedly' didnt deny it? and why was the 'alleged' victim not interviewd by the journalists, to explain what happened?

No statement from a named security/police officer, just random security officer 'who happened to be in the know'

You go fear nigerian companies making up stories, 'our sources' 'someone in the know'

Nigerian journalist are part time investigators/ part time nollywood writers!

Same here, and this pisses me off to an extent that cannot be described in words. The useless spokesman or spokeswoman for the police or military NEVER know about any crime that the media asks them about. Yet when the media publshes a report that is deemed controversial, the useless spokespersons and their superiors are quick to say rubbish like 'you should have cross-checked your facts with us before rushing to press'. Bunch of jokers in this country.

I don`t know what to believe but all the same it does not change the fact that Omojuwa`s ipad was stolen, be it by a passenger or the crew and he has the right to complain...Have always been cautious with my personal effects while flying, only at gun point would it be stolen.

I can see you are among those who doesnt know what to when an organisation or a company doesnt treat you right. It shows that you are a coward. How do you expect Nigeria to grow when something is wrong and you cannot do anything about....smh

Exactly what I was thinking. Omojuwa's ipad was actually stolen, arik actually admitted seeing the ipad, only to change their story after it mysteriously disappeared again.
