Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 2:20am On Jul 29, 2005
Just wondering if MTN is black or white owned? anyone know.? I know the CEO is black
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Bibi(m): 5:09pm On Jul 30, 2005
MTN is a South African company. It's African.........and not owned by an individual, its a public listed company owned by its shareholders....
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by kazey(m): 10:38pm On Jul 30, 2005
Point of correction, it might have an owner. That is if there is an individual who has the controlling shares.

But does it matter? Black or White? who cares.
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 2:57am On Jul 31, 2005
I care because i'm trying to see how the black individuals are doing in south africa regarding business. also since the company was accused of racist practices concerning nigerians, i was trying to find out if the black south africans also adopted the racist way of thinking.

If its black controlled, i'd be a good improvement. I like what they are doing out there in that country
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Hunter(m): 2:04pm On Jul 31, 2005
obong, I find that quite racist saying it would be a good improvement if it was black controlled, it makes no difference what so ever!
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Bibi(m): 7:25pm On Jul 31, 2005
Obong....be careful...you are threading the line of racism. I dont care who owns any company, black or white...as long as the company operates good ethics and moreso providing livelihood for my brothers and sisters in Nigeria. The so called black millionaires in Nigeria dont own anything to employ the common man, rather they stash their money away in foreign accounts, buying expensive cars and property. No income generating investement that employs the lots of Nigerians......If u want to talk of racism, talk about Nigerian millionaires who have no tangible investment in the economy.....they are the racists to their poor , suffering black fellows...
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 2:11am On Aug 01, 2005
Hidden Hunter, you can say that because whites have been able to kill people all over the world and obtained wealth in the process. So now race shouldn't matter? Gimme a break! I'm sure the aborigines in aus would think otherwise while wallowing in thier poor neighborhoods. If race doesnt matter whatsoever why are they the poorest in australia?

Fact remains it does matter who controls it. Especially in a country like south africa that was built on racist pinciples.
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 2:14am On Aug 01, 2005
I agree with you bibi that there are racist in both races. But truth be told, it does matter who controls a compnay. I dont know what fantasy world you live in. I wish it didnt matter but it does. If it didnt matter, why does the government of south africa have to force whites to sell the company shares to blacks

South africa has a formal policy now called Black economic empowerment because for hundreds of years whites made it policy not to allow blacks into key positions. So i don;t get your position at all. Same with Mr Hunter
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Hunter(m): 6:45am On Aug 01, 2005
obong, your views on aboriginals are clearly malinformed, aboriginals receive far more money from the government than any white person. (free housing (not small cheap housing but large 4 bedroom houses, pools etc) more money and free education)

Stolen generation is a load of garbage as well, I'm not denying it happened but it hapened to white families too. If people were unfit to look after children they were placed with people that were.
Vastly blown out of proportion by the opposition for propergander value.
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 1:42pm On Aug 01, 2005
I wasn't refring to the stolen generation. I was refering to thier entire existence and land that was taken. Why should they be happy recieving so much money from the government when thier very way of making a living was taken from them? They can feed themselves and did well before it was taken. If you told me today you would take my house land and cattle and give me government money instead, i'd shoot you. Giving me a government subsidies life is like death. I'll take your statement on the stolen genenation into account. I'd also liek to hear from an aborigine

anyway, i didnt want to get into this entire race discussion. I just wanted to know if the company is black owned as a way of gauging how far the new south africa has come.

From the MTN Group website, MTN is "one of SA's largest and most successful black-controlled companies." http://www.mtn.co.za/default.aspx?pid=9551
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Seun(m): 8:28pm On Aug 01, 2005
That settles it, then. MTN is a black-controlled company. We can now go back to other issues.
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 11:12pm On Aug 01, 2005
Thanks. Seun, were you suggesting I was promoting racial hatred?
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Seun(m): 11:22pm On Aug 01, 2005
Not at all. But you were dangerously close!
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 11:33pm On Aug 01, 2005
Have you ever lived in a country with various races? Thats a basic discussion. But i have noticed nigerians tend to be luck warm about racial issues. My mom was that way until she came the america
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by Vongauche(m): 12:29am On Aug 02, 2005
well, MTN might be "black-owned" but it's still South African. And it has been said by other africans(east, central and west) that black South africans are xenophobic. That, in a way, is understandable considering that they might feel other africans coming into their country are adding unnecessay competition to the job market/social climate which is already difficult for black S. Africans. However, this is no excuse for the alleged maltreatment of Nigerian MTN employees.

Anyway, what I really want to know is if Globacom is really Nigerian as they claim to be. I mean 100% Nigerian. How exactly did Adenuga make his money? People say from oil, but is he merely fronting for some one or some faceless people? It seems like Globacom has some Indians in quite a few key management decisions? why?
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by obong(m): 12:38am On Aug 02, 2005
I heard its fronted by IBB
Re: Is MTN a Black-Owned Company? by hotangel2(f): 8:14am On Aug 05, 2005

Well its a lot cheaper to bring in the indians than to bring some morons from UK or US..yeah agreed the indians are a bit more expensive than the Nigerians but hey...it pays to have people see some "white or colored" skin in your companies..it makes people think that ur company is actually bigger than it really is.

Agreed Adenuga had made loads and loads of money but men, the kind of money Globacom is spending today is even more than Adenuga will ever dream of having and nothing had ben said if he took a loan or not. MTN took some loan from some Finance arm of the World Bank and thats is why the world bank has abt 3% equity in MTN, this is in addition to the loan given MTN by a consortium of banks in Nigeria...again, Motorola and Ericsson provided some kind of equipment syndicated loan to V-mobile in addition to First Bank's loan. How abt Globacom? Guardian Newspaper even said that Globacom had laid over 2,500km lenght of optical fiber across the country (http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/compulife/article04) even MTN can't boast of that achievement.  The Question is; Who is fiancing Globacom?? Nobody knows, eveything abt the company is known except the fiancier which makes it easier to suspect that perhaps Adenuga is fronting for some money-miss road guys in the background. Why shld the source of Globacom's money be shrouded in secrecy or mystery anyway? why? What is EFFC doing? The source of Globacom's finace should be investigated to make sure that it is not from money laundered.
