ASYLUM-SEEKER Bernard Mboueyeu has avoided being deported to his African homeland – after it is believed he self-harmed by drinking a chemical.

Mr Mboueyeu, who lived in Wincobank with wife Sharon until being detained by immigration officials, was due to have been flown back to Cameroon yesterday.

But, instead he needed emergency medical treatment after he is suspected of ingesting cleaning fluid.

He was being treated in the medical unit at Campsfield Immigration Removal Centre, Oxfordshire.

Mr Mboueyeu has been fighting to avoid deportation because he fears he will be taken into custody on his return. He fled Cameroon in fear of his life after criticising the current regime.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, leader of Sheffield Council’s Lib Dem group and a supporter of Bernard, said: “It is a shame Bernard has ended up needing medical attention and there is concern for his welfare.
