I think the Wikipedia page on the Igbo people need to be cleaned up.

Our population section is unclear as well as the number of Igbos in the Diaspora. We should not include the Igbos that were taken during slavery, because they have been assimilated into wider black culture within the Caribbean and North America.

The page really needs to be cleaned up.

You should be worried about your image in society and be less preoccupied about how you look online.

The Igbo people image is already solidified as a hard working/industrious people who have suffered much.

Now go somewhere else and stop bothering the Ndi Igbo.

Igbo is an Igbo regardless if they have been contaminated with other etnicities or not....what would you tell a child that has an igbo father and an Edo mother?? That she is not Igbo because she has been contaminated??

Ridiculous.

The population of Igbos taken in the Diaspora is very UNCLEAR. But we do know the number of Igbos who have recently arrived in the Diaspora.

Any child born to an Igbo man is an Igbo. Regardless if that child's mother is white, Asian, Latino or any other group. Stop overreacting.
Re: Can Someone Clean Up The Wikipedia Page For Igbo People? by ezeagu(m): 12:06am On Aug 20, 2012
The recent diaspora is also very unclear since there are many illegals and people who do not interact with other Nigerians, plus there are those in 'uncharted' territories for Nigeria, for example can anyone guess the number of Igbo people in Papua? The whole of the Igbo diaspora isn't in the US alone.

nigerian culture is patrilineal, meaning a child goes with his father's tribe unless there are circumstances that prevent him or her from doing so.

yes ofcourse. either you are 100% Igbo or just plain half-bred/mixed-race/mongrel. you akatas must keep out of his. these are tribal affairs pertaining to a certain people and you who who have been cursing African culture in other threads, calling us savage, backward, etc., have no right to decide on our savage culture. angry

it is not about your culture or my culture or Goodluck Jonathans' culture. The Universal unspoken tribal law dictates that if a person has no pure tribal blood, he is not tribal.

you add little bacterial culture to milk and it becomes curd. it doesnt stay milk.

I don't know about this "universal unspoken tribal law" (as if tribes didn't invade other tribes and absorb their women as full members of the tribe, like the Vikings), but in Igbo culture there's no such thing as "un-pure" Igbo.

did i say Igbos are unpure i just said that any half-Igbo is not an Igbo and tribal.

anyways, answer my question: do Vikings exist today?
Re: Can Someone Clean Up The Wikipedia Page For Igbo People? by tpia5: 5:55pm On Aug 25, 2012
the vikings were a subtribe of norsemen.

today, norsemen are known as scandinavians and are found in various european countries.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norsemen

the hairstyle, horned helmets, etc changed but that doesnt mean their descendants arent around.

are you saying otherwise?

share plz.

no you are wrong. Scandinavia is a territory and today any people who live in Scandinavia call themselves Scandinavians. They are not true Norsemen due to largescale imigrations into and out of Scandinavia by people from Central and Eastern Europe. why else are they not referring to themselves today as Norsemen or Vikings, (except the historians) Also where are their Norse traditional clothes, dances, songs, ship-building and other traditional craft, religions, or lifestyle isnt that what makes them Norse in the first place? how many of them have already assimilated with other Finnish people, Samis, etc.? however as to the Finnish peoples, i can say that most of their sub-tribes are the original pure ones.

ok lets say for the sake of argument that their are a few pockets of pure Norse population. and their might be. but what about todays british. they are a mixture of Britons, Normans(Norsemen), Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Romans & Celts. are you going to then tel me that Saxons, or Britons exist today.! !! !

let me tell you a FACT. after the advent of christianity, there was massive wave of de-tribalisation and assimilation across Europe to destroy the tribes and henceforth prevent a return to Traditional Paganism. europe has lost all her tribes, save those in the extrem Northern & North-Eastern regions.

ok now lets say many of todays akatas have Igbo blood , maybe 5% or 20-30% of their blood quantum. are you going to say that they are Igbo?! ! angry angry

"Igbohood" among the Igbo is not necessarily determined by blood. Most Igbo groups consider someone to be one of them once that person has been acquainted with their culture, traditions, and habits.

For example, a complete stranger can wander into an Igbo community like that of Ndi Mgborogwu (from Pita Nwana's Omenuko) and assume indentured servitude for a time period. After that time period, the man can acquire land and build a house of his own. With time, and with involvement in community affairs, the man will be accepted and regarded as a member of that community even though people know that he was not originally from there.

I believe this is the case with not only the Igbo but with many groups in southern Nigeria. Take Oduduwa (among the Yoruba) and Jaja Jabogha (among the Ijaw) for example.

The Wikipedia census should deal only with people who are of direct (up to great grand parents) Igbo descent. Trying to count everyone in this world that has a drop of "Igbo blood" is like trying to count the stars.

but that is the wrong way and i doubt many such cases have taken place if at all any.

also Oduduwa was one of the Niger-Congo peoples of the same greater ethnicity as the Yoruba, said to have come from the East, signifying the region of Ekiti and Okun sub-communities in northeastern Yorubaland/central Nigeria. Ekiti is near the confluence of the Niger and Benue rivers, and is where the Yoruba language is presumed to have separated from related ethno-linguistic groupings like Igala, Igbo, and Edo, during the early years of their formation.

who is Jaja Jagboha? can you tell me about him

I'm not an expert on Yoruba mythology, however I've seen many people claim that Oduduwa was Edo (possibly Bini), but that doesn't really matter. What matters is the fact that he was a foreigner (to the Yoruba) who was intergrated into their culture.

Jaja Jubogha (excuse my earlier misspelling) was an Igbo man who was sold into slavery and was absorbed into the ranks of the Ijaw. He founded the kingdom of Opobo and is popularly referred to as "Jaja of Opobo".

Lol. You said that it's the wrong way but that's how it's been for ages immemorial.
