I'd go with Yemi's suggestion. He should break it down further. But you'd have to be watchful though, cause in breaking it down, he will try coating his words to pacify you. But it was the truth he blurted out the first time. And whatever he says next, keep that TRUTH at the back of your mind!

IMO, he means that date didn't turn out as he expected it should be but that doesn't affect his love for you. He MAY give another try.
The way he put it shows he is likely to make a come back since he may have noticed that the time, location and your mood on that day didn't fit well.
But that's just English.

IMO , it Means that even though he has grown to love you and still do,that the r/ship is costing him and if he had known that it will be like this he would not have entered into the r/ship . In otherwords he was not ready/ prepared for the r/ship and its responsibility and now in,he does know how to stop without hurting you and hurting himself in the process. If he didn't love you ,he would have ended the r/ship .
