The “food poisoning” condition that landed Mrs. Patience Jonathan in a hospital in Germany reportedly started in Dubai eleven days ago where she had gone to see a doctor because her hands were twitching.

Presidency sources said she had gone to Dubai after the recent African First Ladies Summit in Abuja, an event that imposed an unfamiliar and grueling schedule of meetings and late nights on Mrs. Jonathan, saying she needed some rest.

Her visit to Dubai was explained as a vacation but our sources said it involved a medical procedure, while in Dubai, she reportedly had "food poisoning" alongside her medical doctor, soon after she returned to Abuja last Monday, the emergency broke and she had to be airlifted to Wiesbaden, Germany for food poisoning.

Since SaharaReporters broke the news yesterday, the Presidency has officially kept mum about the First Lady's condition. Despite a media arm recently fortified to give Mrs. Jonathan a more aggressive press presence, it has provided neither denial nor confirmation.

Last night, Ayo Adewuyi, the First Lady’s media aide, told us that he had himself only just returned from vacation, and pleaded for time to respond to our inquiries.

When we called him today to find out if he had found out Mrs. Jonathan’s whereabouts, he confirmed that she was in Germany and pleaded to let him send a press statement regarding the issue. Several hours later, he insisted that he was still working on a statement.

There have, however, been half-hearted denials and spins in some newspapers and blogs claiming that Mrs. Jonathan is only resting, but none of those outlets have provided her location or shed light on her condition.

Nobody is blaming our beloved First Lady for being ill - in fact every Nigerian is wishing her quick recovery.

The special adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati has denied reports indicating that the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan was indisposed and flown abroad for proper medical attention.

While responding to reports which emanated from an online news platform, Abati said the story “was a rumour and there is nothing like that”.

According to reports from the first lady’s spokesman, Ayo Osinlu, Dame Patience Jonathan did actually travel abroad, but she was only away to take a “moment’s rest” given that she has not taken a rest since President Jonathan’s election last year.

“If you look at her itinerary in August, you will be wondering how she was able to accomplish that. In the course of this week she will be back home. But remember, it all depends on her plans,” he concluded.

In earlier reports, the first lady suffered from food poisoning and was transported in an air ambulance to Wisbanden in Germany for proper medical attention.

His prompt response to the widespread speculation is intended to put the rumour to rest but observers remain skeptical about the quality of information emanating from the seat of government.

Official: Nigeria’s first lady Patience Jonathan hospitalized abroad with food poisoning

ABUJA, Nigeria — The wife of Nigeria’s president remains hospitalized in Germany following a severe bout of food poisoning that’s lasted for days, a government official said Tuesday.

A government official told The Associated Press that Patience Jonathan fell sick about 10 days ago, following her hosting a summit of first ladies from across Africa. As her case of food poisoning worsened, she was flown to Germany for medical treatment, the official said.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as information about Jonathan’s illness had yet to be officially made public, despite numerous newspaper reports and rumors circulating on the Internet. Ayo Osinlu, a spokesman for the first lady, did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

President Goodluck Jonathan has made no public comments about his wife’s health.

AS controversy continues to trail the absence of the First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, from the country and her health condition, the Presidency has indicated that no date has yet been fixed for her return.

When pressed for an update on her matter in Abuja on Tuesday, the Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, Ayo Osinlu, said he had no idea yet on when she would return to the country, as he was not in the position to find out.

Even though there had been no official statement from the Presidency on her situation, Mrs Jonathan was reported by an online medium to have been flown to Germany to undergo treatment for food poisoning.

Presidency sources had only explained that she was taking a long overdue rest, following her gruelling schedule during last year's general election and the recently concluded African First Ladies’ summit, in Abuja.

On Tuesday, Osinlu maintained that he had nothing new to add to the information he had given out a few days ago to a national daily but dismissed as lies, various online reports which had claimed that the First Lady was airlifted to Germany for medical check-up.

Even though Osinlu had confirmed that the First Lady was abroad, he, however, insisted that she was there to rest and not to seek medical attention.

When pressed further for details, the First Lady's spokesman insisted that he could not be forced to speak, saying: "Nobody is going to put a gun on my head and force me to talk when I have no fresh information. My position is not different from what I told Daily Trust".

Asked to speak on the possible return date of the First Lady, he said: "I don't know. I don't have any information on that. You don't expect me to call her and ask her, ‘when are you returning?’ Is she my mate? Ours is to ensure everything is in order to receive her once her return is made known to us. I do not have fresh information on that."

While accusing the Nigerian media of relying on online reports, he declared: "I can tell you authoritatively that the First Lady was not lifted by any air ambulance to anywhere. All those things are lies.”

Jonathan Angry Over Leakage Of Patience's Illness

President Goodluck Jonathan is said to be angry about the leakage of information concerning the sickness of his wife, Patience.
Investigations by Punch Newspapers in Abuja on Tuesday indicated that the President and those closed to him had planned to keep Mrs. Jonathan’s trip “a top secret.”

Mrs. Jonathan is presently in Germany, where she was said to have undergone surgery for ruptured appendicitis. But the Presidency had denied that the President’s wife was ill, saying that she was only resting abroad.
