First, I must congratulate you on your admission...

Now to your question...

Civil Engineering from my perspective, is the oldest branch of the engineering profession. its goes as far back as the bible age...construction of pyramids (Egypt) even the tower of babel (if I can remember correctly) are clearly the works of civil engineering.

Also Civil Engineering is a broad field that deals with a wide variety of projects. Therefore it covers basically all forms of other engineering courses...

Now as fresh man, I would list down possible courses which you're likely to encounter in your journey to become a successful civil engineer.

1. Highways and Transportation Engineering: This can be defined as the study of design and maintenance of the structural facilities involved in the movement of people and cargo from place to place...as an intending civil engineering student, this particular topic would enable you understand the basics of the course (Civil Engineering).

2. Water Resources Engineering: To become a successful Civil Engineer, you must familiarize yourself with natures most affordable gift...water.

In this topic you would learn about harnessing water, transportation and storage of water for development of domestic use, recreation and amenity facilities or uses etc...

3. Sanitary Engineering: As a Civil Engineer, you would also be taught about sanitation...a topic which I believe we Nigerians need most...now this topic I above, deals with the problems of proving safe and adequate water supply both for domestic and industrial use, controlling and preventing air and water pollution, and collection, treatment and disposing of all types of domestic and industrial wastes etc...

4. Structural Engineering: Wao...now you're entering into heart of civil engineering. You've got be serious here. Usually, this topic begins from your 300l, when you must have PASSED all necessary and borrowed courses.

In this particular topic, you would be taught the analysis design and construction of all types of structures such as buildings, bridges, storage tanks, dams and electric power transmission towers...very interesting topic if you ask me.

5. Foundation Engineering: Also a crucial topic which you must pay attention to...this undertakes the study of ways and means of using soil as a material of construction.

6. Construction Engineering: Another tactical course if you ask me...its concerned with the process of developing efficient and economic methods of construction operations such as earth moving and erection procedures.

Good luck.
