Anti-Cameroon group protests in Abuja

A group from Cross River state was in Abuja to protest the ceding of the Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon
ARTICLE | SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 - 2:03AM | BY SHOLA AGBAJE

The Cross River State Political Network (CRISPON), were in Abuja yesterday to protest the ceding of Bakassi to Cameroon.

Members of the group were at the Radio House, where the office of the Minister of Information is located, and a few metres from venue of the National Awards ceremony, to press home their demands.

The members carried placards with inscriptions like: "The Ceding of Bakassi is Unconstitutional," "Give Us Bakassi Please," "Federal Government Appeal Bakassi Case," among others.

The Director-General of CRISPON, Michael Nku Abuo, said the group came to Abuja to stage a peaceful protest in order to put pressure on Federal Government to revisit the Bakassi case at the International Court of Justice (ICC).

"Because on 10th of October 2012,, it will be the deadline and we may not have opportunity to revisit the case again. The ceding will be a breach on the fundamental human rights of Bakassi people which is against the chater of the United Nations and which is also against the constitution of Nigeria especially Sections 2, 8 and 12," he said.

Abuo, who said the group had protested at the Cross River State House of Assembly and Governor's Office, also said that CRISPON will take the protest to the National Assembly tomorrow (Tuesday).

What do you mean by "there is no weight"? Is it because there are not carrying AK 47 and some IEDs?

How will this guys feel? Bearing a cameroonian citizenship, I am a Cameroonian. Na waoh. So when they cut off by Oct 10, 2012, would they be entering Nigeria as illegal immigrants? Do they need Ecowas passport? Was the strategic intent to surgically extricate Mama Bakassi (that PDP Senator from Nigeria). What would OBJ benefit by taking this decision? Where is Prince Bola Ajibola? Would we have a constitution review to remove this guys? Any plans to absorb them by the Cross River State government? What currency would they be using if they decide to cede? Any plans for them to continue to buy Ijebu/ Yellow garri in that region.

it is a fact that the people living in bakasi are nigerians while the land belongs to cameroun. the mistake Nigeria made is going to the court and judgement has been given, if Nigeria tries any war , the UN and the entire comity of nations will give the blame to Nigeria. have you ever wondered why UK did not go to court with argentina on falkland, it is because they know that the land belongs to argentina while the people who are mostly english are settlers. I think the best thing for nigeria is devise a way of rehablitating those nigerians in bakassi that are willing to come to Nigeria and move on.

Bakassi youth vow to surpass Boko Haram

Warn the federal government to act now or face chaos
ARTICLE | SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 - 2:17AM | BY IFERI ETUK

Enraged youths from the Bakassi area of Cross River State continued beating war drums on Tuesday, vowing to surpass the Islamic militant sect, Boko Haram, if the government failed to appeal its ceding.

The Bakassi community is seeking an appeal against the International Court of Justice 2002 ruling that gave Bakassi to neighbouring country, Cameroun. The window for such appeal is 10 years lapsing October 10.

“What is happening now in the northern part of the country is a child's play because we will ensure justice is given to us,” a youth leader from the area under the aegis of Cross River State Political Network, Michael Nku, said during a protest at the National Assembly.

“We will perpetuate more mayhem than what Boko Haram is presently doing in the north."

Whether the threats are empty or backed by capacity remains to be seen.

But the federal government has ignored such warnings and dismissed past threats from Bakassi agitators the Ogonis as merely “attention seeking.”

Both areas have declared self governance and the Bakassi youth announced last month the launching of a new radio station and state paraphernalia including coat of arms and anthem.

At least one hostage case has been recorded in the area since the clamour started.

“Bakassi as a people have always been Cross Riverians in particular and Nigerians in general and they speak Efik, bear our names and share in the culture of the Efiks,” Nku said.

“Bakassi is a Local Government in Nigeria and no such entity ever existed in Cameroun.”

The House deputy media committee chairman, Victor Ogene, who received the youths, said the House will take a decision on the matter later.

actually you are wrong.. The land today known as bakassi has always been part of nigeria, until idiotic obj and his thiefing friends gave it to camerouns ...Corruption...they forgot that they gave part of the south Eastern protectorate away so, lets be real here, This people have a right to protest anything they want. Because of how obj gave away the land about more than 350K nigerians, are today camerounians by nationality, but tribally are full of nigerian major tribes like igbo, kalabari, yoruba and so forth. So do your research before you talk nonsense. I praise this people for asking for their rights, after all what obj did is illegal, people didnt care because of the corruption in the government. At the end of the day it is good that our youths hungry or not are standing up for what their parents refused to stand up for. We determine our own future..no longer our government... During the European scramble for Africa, Queen Victoria signed a Treaty of Protection with the King and Chiefs of Akwa Akpa, known to Europeans as "Old Calabar", on 10 September 1884. This enabled the United Kingdom to exercise control over the entire territory around Calabar, including Bakassi. The territory subsequently became de facto part of the republic of Nigeria, although the border was never permanently delineated. However, documents released by the Cameroonians, in parity with that of the British and Germans, clearly places Bakassi under Cameroonian Territory as a consequence of colonial era Anglo-German agreements. Interestingly, even after Southern Cameroons voted in 1961 to leave Nigeria and became a part of Cameroon, Bakassi remained under Calabar administration in Nigeria until ICJ judgement of 2002.[4]
[edit] Bakassi People

Bakassi people are mainly the Calabar people, the people of Cross River State and Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, including the Efut, Efik, Ibibio, Annang, etc. As you all can see the colonial leaders caused this rubbish, but traditionally the land has always belonged to kalabari..efik people of south eastern nigeria.. so lets know history...and learn from it.. i will tell them to write up a petition find a good lawyer and sue the nigerian government in international court for indirect selling or stealing of property, because we all know that unlike uk, NIGERIA IS NOT A 100% DEMOCRACY..MOST OF THE TIME TRADITIONAL LAWS OVER POWER COLONIAL POWER LAWS....
