French weekly publishes Mohammad cartoons

Reuters - 30 mins ago

PARIS (Reuters) - French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad on Wednesday, a move criticized by the French authorities which sent riot police to protect the magazine's offices.

Issues of the magazine hit newsstands with a front cover showing an Orthodox Jew pushing a turbaned figure in a wheelchair with several caricatures of the Prophet on its inside pages, including some of him naked.

The front page cartoon had the wheelchair-bound figure saying "You mustn't mock" under the headline "Untouchable 2", a reference to a hugely popular French movie about a paralyzed rich white man and his black assistant.

The publication came amid widespread outrage over a short film, made with private funds in the United States, that mocks the Prophet and has ignited days of sometimes deadly protests in the Arab world, Africa, Asia and some Western countries.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius criticized the move as a provocation and said he had ordered security beefed up at French diplomatic offices in the Muslim world.

Charlie Hebdo's Paris offices were fire bombed last November after it published a mocking caricature of Mohammad. In 2005, Danish cartoons of the Prophet sparked a wave of violent protests across the Muslim world that killed at least 50 people.

Many Muslims consider any representation of Allah or the Prophet Mohammad offensive.

"Is it relevant and intelligent in this environment to add fuel to the fire? The answer is no," Fabius told France Info radio. "I'm very worried... and when I saw this I immediately issued instructions for special security precautions to be taken in all the countries where it could be a problem."

The government has called for restraint over the cartoons, restating the principles of free speech in France and urging those shocked by the images to take action through the courts.

Muslim leaders in France, which has Europe's largest Muslim population, have appealed for calm.

As outrage over the anti-Muslim film continues to fuel violence and protests across the Islamic world, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the authorities had rejected a request to hold a march against the film in Paris.

"There is no reason for us to allow conflicts that do not concern France to enter our country," Ayrault told RTL radio.

Social media had circulated calls for a protest on Saturday against the film, after police arrested about 150 people who tried to take part in an unauthorized protest near the U.S. Embassy in Paris last week.

Its now so obvious that such offensive aimed at Muslims is a new war using a different weapon/mean.I think this will only justify and strengthen the resolve of muslim mobs to cause more violence and attack western interests and diplomatic missions however regretable that may be.

^Things are looking bad for the world. Everyday I listen to the news I feel like I am in 1912 not 2012. The global system is practically collapsing before us and I just wonder what the outcome will be.

The west wants to dominate by all ways.I only blame the muslim governments for their subservience.the "goodness" of the west always needs an "evil" to fight.so after communism and the fall of the soviet union, they are targeting muslims.

We muslims have no choice but to pray hard for Almighty Allah to send us Imam Mehdi (ajtfs) soon and make way for the decent of Prophet Jesus (as).this is regardless whether you believe Imam Mehdi (ajtfs) has already being born or would be born.the ummah needs a divine leader to unite it and for muslims to speak in one voice and in fact humanity at large.too many satanic and selfish leaders are causing problems.

What the French cartoonist has done is not the wisest but and a big but Lagosshia, you have just subscribed to what the french cartoonist is saying by saying violence is justified for any insult or perceived insult to the prophet.

If nothing happens as a result of this silly cartoon because even I admit its totally unnecessary, then the Muslims especially in France can actually stick two fingers at the cartoonist. We'll wait and see

Compare to this story in the Daily Mail today. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2205235/Jesus-married-Proof-God-spoke-wife-Mary-Magdalene-ancient-papyrus.html. You can almost guarantee that nothing will happen.

We know Christ is divine, wasn't married, is the Son of the Most High God, so this story doesn't really bother us. Let the intellectuals keep making a fool of themselves.

But I thought its Islam that wants to dominate by all means. Perhaps you are not aware of that but I doubt it.

Please stop that game of trying to put words into my mouth to make your point and build an accusation.

I never said violence is justified.read what I said and do not interpret it to mean any other thing than my statement sound.

Islam will only dominate if God will so and we believe Islam will only prevail in the four corners of the earth with the coming of Imam Mehdi (ajtfs) and the descent of Jesus (as).

You need to take note of Islam as an ideology and muslims as people.I said the west wants to dominate in all ways.if you got problem with my statement, you should've accused muslims instead of Islam of wanting to dominate.I didn't say for instance democracy wants to dominate because the west claim to speak in the name of democracy.and really the imperialism and colonization of the west to the detriment of africa and other places are not secret.

France shutters embassies, schools over new Muhammad cartoon

By NBC News' Nancy Ing and wire reports

France has temporarily closed its embassies and schools in 20 countries after a satirical magazine in Paris published insulting cartoons of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, a move it fears will add “fuel to the fire” of global tensions over an anti-Islam film.

“We have indeed decided as a precautionary measure to close our premises, embassies, consulates, cultural centers and schools,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman told Reuters.

Riot police were also sent to the offices of the weekly magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

The publication came amid widespread outrage over a crude, provocative film, made by anti-Islam campaigners in California, that mocked the Prophet and ignited days of deadly protests including an attack in Libya in which U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed.

The front page cartoon had the figure in a wheelchair saying "You mustn't mock'' under the headline "Untouchable 2'', a reference to a hugely popular French movie about a paralyzed rich white man and his black assistant.

Salafist Muslims in Paris has already called for a protest this Saturday at Trocadero, near the Eiffel Tower, against the California-made film.

A small group of about 100 were prevented by riot police from approaching the US Embassy in the center of Paris last Saturday.

French authorities have refused to authorize any demonstration.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said the authorities had rejected a request to hold a march.

"There is no reason for us to allow conflicts that do not concern France to enter our country,'' Ayrault told RTL radio.

The west seems to be going through a resurgence of far-right ideologies. Hence the emergence of all these videos and images. Today its muslims, tomorrow its blacks and next tomorrow: the jews.

Evidently they are saying in principle we are not fazed by your protest or "rhetorics". And this brings to mind muslims reaction to the video, they are simply trying to tell us that whether we attack their embassies or protest or speak out they will not be intimidated, yet they fail to realiaze that their hate material ends up bringing more people to Islam, one of the reason Islam is spreading in the west is that sometime negative propaganda ends up getting people to learn more about Islam, Allah is using their own tricks against them.

Subhanallah! Indeed they plot and plan, but Allah is the best of planners.

This has always been my take, they come all out to paint Islam bad, but still help to propagate it even though its not their intention. They give the ummah the opportunity to tell people about the real Islam.

They show to the world that islam is archaic and barbaric, they tell lies about the Qur'an and the prophet(saw), they slander muslims and stereotype them as being violent, this raises consciousness of the people about these "bad" set of people and their beliefs and in turn, those who Allah wishes to be guided find true faith and happiness in Islam.

There is always a good thing about a bad situation, afterall, precious stones are always buried in dirt...
