Was Jesus Christ's Death And Resurrection Really Necessary? by ajf(m): 6:07pm On Sep 21, 2012
Why must God sacrifice his only son to save the world? Isn't he the most powerful? Can't he just decide for himself to forgive the people he created without having to let his son die? Or is he sacrificing to a higher being?
If he's so powerful like the bible says, why does he need to make any sacrifice? Who is he sacrificing to? Doesn't that mean that he's not so powerful since you only make sacrifices in situations out of your control?
People please help me with this questions. I am really confused...

Isn't it obvious that you are not looking for an answer but an "opportunity" to ridicule the beliefs of christians? Surely people will come on here to contribute but they also are people like you and are simply waiting for the first christian to comment, so they can jump: on the attack!.

I am not looking to ridicule anybody. I am from a christian home and these are questions that have been brewing inside of me since my sunbeam days...

Good question. Thing is, the more you ask these questions the easier you can see through the hogwash that is religion undecided.

Lets put it this way.

He came to die for our sins and for the sins of the coming generation (basically original sin from Adam and Eve)
He planted a tree of knowledge of good and evil in the garden and asked them not to eat it (keep in mind he knows the beginning and the end)
They eat the fruit and he gets pissed (having already known they will eat it) and curse them

Now he sends his only son (who is himself by the way in another form)
To come and die for our sins (remember that original sin?) as a sacrifice to himself that will top all sacrifices.
So he sacrifices himself to himself for a sin he knew that we will commit? Strange

summary: No he didn't have to die and resurrect. If i were omnipotent, omniscient and all knowing I'm sure i can come up with a better plan to fix things.

Keep in mind that the preaching of Jesus was centred around the end (Following the Roman oppression) is near (2000 years on and the Joke is on us) undecided

@Op I hope my little write up would be of help...

1) In the begining, sin entered the world through one man: "When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. " (Romans 5:12)

2) Sin results in death - we know this from the verse above, as well as the well known Romans 6:23, "The wages of sin in death."

3) Jesus was the one man by whom sin is overcome. Romans 5:18 -"Yes, Adam's one sin brought condemnation upon everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness makes all people right in God's sight and gives them life. "

4) Jesus had to die and be resurrected because sin is death, therefore His resurrection shows His victory over sin. Romans 6:6 says, "Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. "

Paul summarizes this in Romans 6:9-11, "We are sure of this because Christ rose from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. He died once to defeat sin, and now he lives for the glory of God. So you should consider yourselves dead to sin and able to live for the glory of God through Christ Jesus."

I hope I've been able to answer you question.

Thanks for the write up. But my point is,couldn't God find a better way to 'defeat' sin than letting his only son die? Since he's all powerful, if he says sin is defeated then sin should be defeated...

God did not specifically send Jesus to die...

John 3:16.  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Note there was no death is this passage... God sent his son to reconcile the world to himself. It indeed was a risky enterprise but the intention of his mission was not to die...see the passage below.

Mark 12:1-8. Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 2 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5 He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

6 "He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

7 "But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' 8 So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

Now...Jesus death came as a sign of love. As a sign of love that the world has never seen before...he loved us so much that he was willing to die for us...

1 peter 2:20-25. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

22 "He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth."

23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 "He himself bore our sins" in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; "by his wounds you have been healed." 25 For "you were like sheep going astray," but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

The cross is an invite to come and become a son and a daughter of God like the one they killed.

To also come to God’s family. And as an eternal sign. He rose Jesus from the death and gave him a name above all names...that at the name of Jesus, every kneel must bow and every tounge must confess that Jesus is lord.

Cheers!
