With Nissan "Service Engine Soon" does not mean your vehicle requires the regular oil changes, etc, but an indication that there is some problem that needs your attention and which is to be detected by a scan tool.

Not true.

The Service Indicator in the Nissan Xterra is very different to an Engine Check light. The Service Indicator is based upon distance travelled and time elapsed. Servicing the car does not extinguish the light; the light does not know if the vehicle's been serviced or not. It needs to be cleared, either by suitable OBD equipment, or using the controls on the dash.

If the engine is serviced, and the Service Indicator has not illuminated, it still needs to be reset, otherwise it will illuminate well before the next service is due.

@siena, i beg to differ.
Costee is absolutely right.
as much as i know nissan cars, i drive a murano, the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" indicator is similar to the "CHECK ENGINE" indicator for Toyota, Honda etc. nissan cars have a separate indicator for regular engine servicing as per mileage driven on the trip computer. my murano has it on the centre console LCD display & this can be reset manually once service is done. infact, because i use mobil1 for my car, i sometimes reset the trip computer without servicin jst to clear the annoying warning indicator.

My apologies, you and Costee are right, I was unaware the Nissan's CEL was the SES warning.

@ Vitality: Please disregard my previous, and go with Costee's advice, hope you get your truck sorted soon.

the usual way of course. scan the vehicle, fix wateva is responsible, and voila!!!! although sometimes, a mere reset might be all u nid. u may also do well to invest in an OBD2 scanner. i have one for my personal use & dat helps greatly.

Car Gurus in the house, i scanned my xterra truck and the scanner displayed
P0705 Transmission Range Sensor Circuit malfunction (PRNDL Input)
Please what does this mean and what do i need to fix?
Thanks a bunch

I drive an Xterra and mine shows the service engine soon light.
I was actually worried about it and more so when it refused to go away after i'd serviced the car.
So I took it to a tech, who scanned it and cleared the code, but warned me it will return once i started driving maybe in a day or two, and in fact it returned 2 hours later!

However, I got a consolation when he told me it won't affect my driving experience or the car negatively.
The cause he said was that my Oxygen and Knock sensors were bad.
Once changed, the problem would go away and he asked for 40k to fix that.
Of course I did opportunity cost and postponed the fixing for another day! shocked shocked

Now I hardly ever notice the light even though it's still on the dash. And my ride rocks too grin grin
