Witnesess said the mangled Passat car with registration number AE 808 AKD was on top speed from Epe when suddenly the car’s engine fell off, causing the Reps member’s SUV travelling from Lagos to run into it headon.

MY QUESTION IS: WHAT could have made a car engine fall out?

FWD. Yes, that could make an engine of such configuration fall off.

Am not sure about the Passat, but i have heard of other FWD cars gearboxes that fall off the car. One was actually a 605 I4. By mere looking at engine bay of transverse positioned engine, one will see that the engine is just hanging on the engine mounts. Complete failure of those mounts can drop the entire engine or gearbox on the ground. Thats why i dont fancy cars with transverse mounted engines. But what can we do. Almost all cars now are FWD. But then, I could be wrong.

There could still be other reasons for engine falling, that i donot know.

Ikenna.

A load of bullsh1t. I won't take what the eye-witnesses seriously. If all the engine mounts failed, the engine still can't drop out. The transmission still has the driveshafts, so that ain't going anywhere. The engine is bolted to the transmission, so that ain't going anywhere either. I would be more inclined to believe the Volkswagen suffered structural failure, due to a bad repair job, or plain old rust.

And lastly, the most obvious thing - the Volkswagen isn't a Passat, it's a Jetta II. If the obvious can't be spotted, how can it be ascertained that the engine and transmission fell out of the car?

Rubbish!

So @Sienna, the claim here is totally impossible as disproved by you but Ikenna has some points especially with shoddy jobs the auto mechanics in NIgeria do.

I'm saying, if all three mounts failed - the one at the front between the engine and transmission by the starter motor, the one at the back on the passenger's side lower and the one on the gearbox end just under and behind the battery, the engine still couldn't fall out of the car. You've got both driveshafts bolted to the transmission, and in the absense of these, you've got the subframe, which would prevent the engine from dropping to the road.

And as I stated, I have very little faith in "Journalists" that can't tell the difference between a Volkswagen Passat, and a Volkswagen Jetta II.

@Sienna, his comments reeks of unfounded adulation of your auto experiences which are purely influenced by your stay in the UK. Some of these things you feel impossoble are outright possibilities with auto technicians here. would you say it is impossible for tyre with 5nuts to come off, i tell you i have seen this and it is down to the shoddy jobs by these guys.

Do you own a car and do you even seat and watch mechanics remove things and fix back here in Nigeria? Some impacts/pits on the road can jar out the additional holds you are talking about without the seats. Please educate yourself and don't be spoon-fed, here is another Jetta Car not in Nigeria with almost same incident http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=70929

I looked at both links.

In the first one, the nearside engine mount bolts failed, so the engine dropped within the engine bay. Note, dropped down in the bay, and was resting on the left of the lower subframe.

So, the engine didn't "drop out" of the car.

In the second link, the car involved was a Pontiac Bonneville. Again, engine mount faulure, but the engine did NOT fall out of the car. Think of an engine and transmission sitting on the road, think of the height. How would it drop out, and how would the car run over it? Unless the car had the ground clearance of an earth mover, it would be impossible.

I'm used to gross exaggeration, both on online fora, as well as the press, but I don't simply accept all I read. I always apply logic to such reports, and analyse what I've read.
