BY CLIFFORD NDUJIHE

UMBRELLA body of Igbo living in Lagos, the Ndigbo Lagos, has described as unnecessary the flickering controversies trailing Professor Chinua Achebe’s comments in his new book, “There was a country,” that late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was part of General Yakubu Gowon’s cabinet that initiated pogrom and genocide as a policy that killed millions of Igbos especially children during the civil war.

At a time Igbo and Yoruba leaders of the South-East and South-West as well as their counterparts in the South-South were forging an alliance and hammering out solutions to the country’s protracted socio-economic, political and developmental problems, the Professor Anya O. Anya-led group said what was needed now was sustaining the unfolding harmonious relations between the Igbo and Yoruba nations.

“Ndigbo Lagos deems the ongoing heated reactions to Elder statesman and world renowned writer, Prof Chinua Achebe’s personal chronicle of his experience during the civil war as being very unnecessary. The issue of what roles all actors on both sides played during the events leading to the unfortunate civil war and the prosecution of the war itself have for a long time been in the public space,” Ndigbo Lagos said in a statement by Chief Chuma Igwe, publicity secretary.

Noting that Chief Awolowo had spoken for himself in response to similar issue in 1983, Ndigbo Lagos said Awolowo’s response was enough to close the matter.

It said: “At this point in time the South-East, SouthSouth and South-West are in consultations working together for a better Nigeria to ensure that such a situation does not arise again. Ndigbo Lagos believes that the commendable quality of interpersonal relationship between Ndigbo and the Yoruba Nation should be sustained and translated into mutually beneficial political, social and cultural relationship for the progress of our country.

“The ongoing demand of the South-East for the creation of additional one state, the serious infrastructure deficit subsisting in our geopolitical zone and the Igbo Presidency project are areas Ndìgbo Lagos believes the South-West should come out with unequivocal support for the Ndigbo position.

“We should focus on how the two nations and indeed the entire South can cooperate to enthrone fairness, equity and justice in the Nigerian polity. That is the legacy we should aim at, moving forward.”

Honestly i don't understand it.I have never heard where someone feeds his foe in war?Abi held liable for lack of food in the foe's territory. The Igbos should have used there ever super powers(which they boost of,to tackle there needs of food during the war.) Abi Ojukwu and the brainy Igbo race acquired weapons and forgot the critical stomach of her people.
Did the Nigerian army continue to starve the conquered territories of Igbo people? If no,Its war!the Igbos must understand its war and don't expect roses from the enemy.

Awolowo had to do what he had to.To bring the war to an end and save the dying Igbos.A solution that reduced the life span of the war is welcoming.

What does one person describing the actions of another person (alleged or real) have to do with Igbo and Yoruba relations?

Why do we Nigerians like to act so *headache-inducing* in this matter?

Come to think of it - how many Non-Igbo Unions have declared support for Igbos or have reacted in conciliatory tones when a Non-Igbo says something negative about Ojukwu, for instance?

Such double standards!

That's because Ojukwu was a cowardly fool. If you don't like their stance, tell them to take their Ndigbo gang and their subjects across the Niger. We don't need their conciliatory tones, we want them out.

I don't even know why Yorubas are fraternizing with Ibos, they are the second enemy after the hausa/fulani. I'd rather we go with Ijaws, middle belters, and Edos. Ibos are useless.

Can you remind me, please, when someone wrote stuff like Achebe wrote about Awo on any Igbo? Tick tock tick tock. . .

Now don't even dare to mention the juvenile rantings that go on in fora like these.

Yorubas don't even concern themselves with such nonsense.

One thing that is certain is never will an Hausa man trusts an Igbo man. The rallying point for an Igbo man should have been Yoruba people in Igbo aspiration to rule Nigeria.
Achebe has successfully drawn the confidence of a Yoruba back to 1970 when the civil war ended. It will take another 42 years to get back to where Igbo relationship was before Achebe's outburst. I want to let an average Igbo man knows that without them an Hausa man will rule Nigeria so a Yoruba man, but this is not thesame with the Igbos, without Yoruba vote an Igbo man will never rule Nigeria.
The latest outburst and counter reactions have shown that, at any slightest opportunity an Igbo man will want to avenge or revenge the civil war episode on Yorubas. This was demonstrated during June 12, 1993. The Igbo thought Yoruba will declare a secession like in 1967 but this was averted because Yorubas do not act foolishly.
To whom it may concern, Yoruba people have known that they are not safe in the hands of an Igbo President or Ruler.

What is Ndibo Lagos? This is how war starts, a little here a little there and KABOOM! ibo are in the landlocked state of Nigeria doing petty business in the north, west, mb, ss, etc. There is nothing like Ndibo Kano, Lagos, Oyo, etc. When will ibo develop Orlu? Ama-ifeke? Mgbidi? Mbaise? Onicha? You hate the SW, and I think they should speak for themselves NOW, but you are joining yourselves to them by force but yet I see you abuse them. When will the SWesterners tell ibo not to pack everyone in their villages to the SW? Is it when yawa gas again they will be whining for 4200 years with seniles like Aschebe leading the charge? Anyway, the truth is here, see bragging of the biggest ibo general since their beginning in 1914 (iboz were not known to exist before then). And see the lamenting run away ibo "non-Lieutenant" just 2 years 6 months and 9 days after. Weigh in with objective comments only ===>

No one is jealous of ibo, for what? Is it the petty business they use as cover up and supplement to their real business of kidnapping, ritual money, drug trafficking, counterfeiting currency, pharmaceutical drugs, ritual killing, fraud, corruption, ALUU, etc??
