Hello NLs!
Please, I want your sincere views on this cultural aberation.

A colleague of mine lost her husband some weeks ago. I couldn't go to see her due to some peronal engagements.
Later, I called her on phone to condole with her and she told me ''it's well''. When she resumed work, almost everyone that comes to condole her would say '' it's well''.
This got me confused. Is it well that her husband is dead? is it well that her husband was shot three times at the head on his way to Onitsha from his village? Is it well that her husband was killed by armed robbers or assasins? is it well that her only child/daughter is just five years? Is it well that the woman is now left alone to bring up her child?
I mean what is well there? To the best of my knowledge, when a woman lost her husband, especailly in Igboland, vis-a-vis Nigeria, people will try to tell her that worse things has happened to other people. Or as a christian, she should not weep like someone that has no hope or that God will reward those that killed her husband. But telling her it is well, seriously, it is confusing me.
Is this part of our culture what could be responsible for this?

Definitely not part of African culture. African culture expects here to be in mourning mood, wail whenever anyone pays a condolence visit and reply "I'm lost/ dead" for every word of comfort/soul lifting she gets. Why?! She is a woman. Women can't get a grip of their emotions and should not outgrow their sorrows.

The "it is well" phrase is a fad that originated from the church. . . I daresay, a good one. What's the point moaning, soaking in self pity and wallowing in depression when something unpleasant/unplanned for befalls you?saying "it is well" is healing. To the soul and body. Repeating it consistently gives you an inner hope. There's strength in staying positive.

It is well. O digo nma already for Ify.
