Ijebu And Oyo-who Speaks Yoruba Language Among The Two? by bamac(m): 4:19pm On Nov 08, 2012
i was in a bank at ijebu-ode when the argument started whether or not to create ijebu state. Later it developed to the argument of who speaks yoruba between ijebu and oyo, i was shocked when sentiment came to the party, the ijebu's in the bank said they speak the real yoruba while the few oyo's in the bank claimed to be the real yoruba speaker. Please i want nairalanders to give a say about this argument.

What is called Yoruba people or Yoruba language is Oyo. The Ijebus according to the Awujale are not Yorubas and came from a different route from the Yorubas e.g Sudan.
The Awujale also said that the Ijebu people should look forward to a cooperation between them and Itsekiris.
The ancient Ijebus did not speak Yoruba but a language similar to what the Itsekiris speak today. The Awujale having gone through the chronicles of his ancestors on the Ijebu throne noted that they did not even bear Yoruba names then.
To know more about the wonderful people of Ijebuland, visit the Awujale or search for his recent speeches.
