elampiro:

2 Timothy 4: 1-5

New International Version (NIV)

4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
Hmmm.... I dare anyone to quote this text to your MOG. If this doesn't open your eyes what will? On OP...... well written and on point. Not everyone will hear you so...those who have ears let them hear.

People wake up and smell the coffee!

These "Men of God" have been running the biggest scam in Nigeria for years, this is just the tip of a very cancerous iceberg. They prey on the weak minded and gullible.

Have you all ever wondered why there are more churches in the under educated and underdeveloped areas of Lagos than in the more swanky areas?

Have you ever seen someone preaching and ringing bell at 5am in ikoyi or or VI?

Education, enlightenment and freedom from anachronistic dogma is our only way to be rid of this "Cancer". angry

ATMC: Practical ways to put a stop to the problem facing d christian today is what my ear is itching for

The practical steps u seek can be found in the Holy Bible, simple. "Hos.4:6. My people perish for the lack of knowledge." Am guilty of this too.

Our so-called "men of God" need help from God, but won't admit it. Cos they are too busy being Scribes and Pharisees. Infact, we all need help. (2 Chorn. 7:14.If my people, which are called by my Name shall humble themselves, and pray and seek my Face and turn from their wicked ways: then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land).

The church in Nigeria today lost its purpose the moment it decided to abandon its primary assignment - seeking the lost and bring hope to the hopeless. The Nigeria church is now a commercial entity in a religion garb. The most saddening part of it is that, a lot of people are so hopelessly blind to reality of the situation of the Nigerian church today that any attempt to point out excesses of some the modern day pastor/bishop/GO is met with a loud condemnation of "touch not my anointed" chorus. In my opinion (note that I said in MY opinion)Pentecostalism has done far more damage to Christianity in Nigeria than good and here is my argument.

There are more church now (due to explosion of Pentecostal churches) than there were 30/40 years ago - Yet Nigeria is far worse that it was 30/40 years ago.

There are more Christians than there are 30/40 years ago - There is nothing to show in our national lives for this increase.

We are where we are, because the Christianity has become so commercialised that it has lost its appetite for raising genuine and true worshipers of God. The blessings of God today are being peddled to the highest bidder and we continue to bring the standard of God down to level of man, instead of bringing men up to the standard of God.

Despite my criticism of the Pentecostal churches above, the orthodox church are not fearing any better as they seem to have caught the commercial virus/bug of the Pentecostal churches, the health and education systems referred to by the OP were product of orthodox churches back in the day. But how many of the orthodox churches now operate not for profit schools or hospital? most of them have seen how the little cousins (Pentecostals) are reaping bountifully from their ventures and have decided to travel down the same route. They all seem to have forgotten that well being of the community is at the heart of gospel.

May God help his church in Nigeria

Sisi_Kill: Don't know about everybody else but the Nigerian Church lost its purpose for me the day one pastor stood on the pulpit and and thought it was okay to tell this story....

So apparently the church has been trying to acquire its own building (Have you noticed Naija churches are always in the middle of one building fund gimmick or the other...wassup with that? ) Anyhoo, they have been collecting money since January and they haven't even gotten to the half way point (No surprise. . considering the state of the Economy).

One day one of the parishioners a young widow whose children are still in Nigeria was having an after service conversation with the pastor and she just happened to mention to him how much she's saved for the tickets to bring her children over and this wicked man tells her to donate the money towards the building fund. . .oh wait, I didn't get that right, he told her God told him to tell her to donate the money towards the building fund (let's just ignore the fact that "God" did not instruct him before the woman told him how much she had. Yes, Yes I know it's hard to ignore but we will just pretend okay.) Like any normal human being whose brains have not turned to mush from lack of use, she balked...she was like "Ah pastor, not this money oh" so of course she didn't.

The moral of his story is that if something bad happens to her now, she will forget when she didn't heed the voice of the Lord. Of course now it goes without saying that deep down, he will be hoping something bad happens to her just to prove his point. If this is not evil I don't know what is. . .and this is the man I am supposed to shout Amen to his prayers? I don't think so!!

Can you imagine how long that poor woman woulda been working, probably taking all sorts of jobs to make enough money so she can be reunited with her kids? If the church wasn't so upside down shouldn't it be a refuge for the oppress. . .a place where people like her can go for respite, shouldn't the church, who is all about love and family, try help this woman bring her broken family together?! Seriously, look at the way your church treats the poor, the orphans, the widowed, the elderly, the weak and it will tell you if they are truly serving their purpose (Please don't mention the one one bag of rice they dash them once a year. . .even devil worshipers can afford to do that, so that's not impressive).

Worse than the total disregard they have for the weak, hopeless and helpless among us is the way these churches are making people hard hearted to people's suffering. After this wicked pastor finished his story, see the congregation tsk tsking away like he just told them she stole money from the vestry and when he said if something bad happens to her now, she won't remember how she didn't heed God's voice. . .these sheeples actually crowed in agreement. I swear I might as well have been in the middle of a witch and wizard's coven with the way these people were relishing the thought of something bad happening to this poor woman.

You know, on second thoughts. . .I'll have to disagree that the Nigerian church has lost his purpose. We say that only because we still think the purpose of the church is to do God's work when it is obvious it is actually to pave the way for the devil to enter people's hearts and on that. . .they are doing a FANTASTIC job.

I saw a quote somewhere..."The closer you are to the church, the farther you are from God".

My only problem with topics like this is that people tend to generalize. I know of churches that preach godliness and true righteousness. In the Apostolic Faith, for instance, there is no collection/donation. The leaders live humble lives.
Even Jesus, the owner of the church isn't happy with all that is going on in His name. The excerpt below is what he revealed to somebody recently who wrote it in a book. I am quoting

"For Church leaders, one of the things Jesus showed me concerning some of you was that after the rapture had taken place, I saw many of you from different denominations and Churches running helter-skelter with members of your congregation who did not make the rapture. Then I was shown where all those leaders who did not preach salvation, sanctification, baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire, and did not get it themselves and preach the truth to their members were crying and rolling on the ground, blaming the earlier missionaries for misleading them from knowing what it really means to be born again. Jesus said that all of you still have time to repent and be born again and preach and teach it in your Churches. He opened my eyes to see some of those churches but I was not told to mention names in this book. Church leaders who preached the gospel but did not do as they preached, were in hell too. They will not correct some rich people in their Churches when they commit sin because of their money".
He is sick of people making merchandise of people with His name. But the congregation is also responsible for looking for religion without sacrifice: where another person will fast for you, see God for you, prophesy for you, choose your life partner for you.
God's judgement is coming on the Shepherd and the sheep

This corruption now permeates all the churches in Nigeria...orthodox and pentecostal. Christians are being deceived everyday by inglorious men who calls themselves men of God.

They keep their worshippers dis-satisfied so that they will keep on coming, knowing fully well tthey wont come to church again once their problems are declared over..... Christians are blindfolded to perpetually fight imaginary spiritual battle against the devil and they cast, bind and curse the devil even in the house of God....Jude 1:9 But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

When Jesus fed 5,000 people, he collected the food from a young boy....if it were to be our Nigerian Pastors, they would have conned the boy into giving out the bread as either special offering, seed sowing, tithe or prophet upkeep...promising him a reward that never existed and quoting Matthew 10:41 The person who welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward.

I hardly post on this topic, but what i have seen lately in the church is the fulfillment of the bible. Iniquity is abounding, I read Psalm 50 (The message version) and i began to see giving in a different dimension. It is true that it is more blessed to give than to receive, but giving out of compulsion is not acceptable to God whether it is tithe, offering, vow, or any kind of giving.
Christians should stop depending solely on what they hear from MOGs, open the Bible and read for yourself. Christ paid for everything about our life, He became poor so that we might be rich, He was crushed for the inequalities in our lives, He made life simple and free for us, but we have chosen to still pay with our own acts for what has already been paid for. The soil upon which fear grows is IGNORANCE, the Tree itself is called FEAR and the leaves are sickness and disease. IN ALL THY GETTING GET WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING.

If the Government wasnt corrupt, i would've suggested some churches start paying tax.
they occupy vast lands and have so many bizness interest tax free.
Imagine how much the government will rake into its coffers.
at least if the churches cant contribute to charity, they could do so through paying taxes that will be used to better the country.

In thee bible, John 12:3-7

3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c] but you will not always have me.”

[b]Replacing Mary with "the congregation", Jesus with "Oristejafor", Judas Iscariot with "Nigerians", nard and perfume with "Jet", we have:

3 Then the Congregation took jet, an expensive jet; they gave it to Oritsejafor. And the house was filled with the delight of the jet.
4 But some of Nigerians, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this jet sold and the money given to the poor? Nice thread OP.
I opened a thread on this section to discuss the proliferation of churches in the land and yet there is so much corruption and evil in the land. A fanatic came on that thread to call me an idle fellow for being able to notice the number of religious houses on a street. The pitiable fact is that the church in Nigeria has completely lost the plot,as the so called pastors and daddy GOs are as much a part of the corruption and wickedness as the politicians.
Was in a church recently and the evil pastor was fleecing the poor congregation as usual-the congregation was being coerced to each buy a bundle of native broom that sells for fifty Naira in the open market for two thousand Naira. The purpose of buying the broom was to sweep all forms of sorrow and misery and sin out of the congrregations households. You needed to see the scramble as poor members of the congregation bought these brooms and indirectly contributed to pastorpreneurs next four wheel drive.
The pastors are as much a part of Nigerias problem as the politicians!

Really the nigerian church has lost its purpose, the day i heard ayo oritsejafor was given a jet by his members i screamed what! shocked, a man who has his church in warri, who drives around the city and sees the plight of the people, the poverty in the land, the non existence of infrastructures and his members were able to raise about N3-5Billion for a jet, do you know what that money will do in the city of warri? how many schools, libraries, kilometers of roads, water schemes and jobs you can create with that money? i agree with sisikill, to blazes with the bags of rice they give widows once a year, the same money you take from them all year long, by their fruits we shall know them and they are really exhibiting them.

I have noticed a recurring trend in nairaland.
Posts attacking the church of God make front page.
Posts promoting Islam and atheism make front page.
Posts promoting the Church of God do not make front page.
Posts attacking men of God especially of the pentecostal extraction, make front page.
What is Nairaland's agenda? I can only deduce that there is something in the church of Jesus Christ that ticks the owners off.
Perhaps,it is the presence of the Spirit of God,whom the world does not know, and can never understand.
And for the foolish christians that go about bashing their constituency and exposing their family matters to the public,I pity you.
Know that Satan is fighting the true church, and is using you to do that.
And now say whatever you like and insult me,I don't care.
