You can say that again. Many tech ignoramus in nigeria will jump up in jubilation. A feature on the smallest android device since time immemorial.

4llerbuntu: This feature "innovation" is dead on arrival. NO TELCO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WILL ENABLE THIS.

na wetin remain for dem na? BBM works with BIS and not bundled data on blackberries

unless as i suspect is going to be the case anyway, with the release of BB10 this idea of unlimited data through BIS will be a thing of the past.

warrhell, its not like d feature is novel, afterall nimbuzz and skype will do this. but that u will pay pittance and then dump all ur phone calls on the telco's data pipes for free? u gotta be joking

It is on Wifi so it bypasses the telcos networks all together.

Re: Blackberry Introduces BBM Voice Calls: Lets You Call BBM Contacts Free! by WhyAWhy(m): 8:19pm On Nov 14, 2012
techsuplex: BlackBerry have introduced the ability to make voice calls between BBM contacts. The Service which is called BBM voice lets you make voice calls over wifi to BBM contacts by simply tapping the call button while in a chat and you’ll start a voice call. BBM Voice will add some great depth to BBM, providing you the ability to escalate a chat to a voice call when the situation calls for it. This feature should be huge in emerging markets or for anyone calling long distance as there will be no long-distance charges.

Additionally, in BBM you’ll be able to see each users status as well so you’ll know who is available for a call and who isn’t. When on a call you’ll see a split-screen view and can still use any other apps on your device. So you can still use the chat function as well as send pictures within BBM or even check email or use the browser.

download the new BBM 7 (beta) with BBM voice here: http://www.techsuplex.com/2012/11/14/breaking-rim-introduces-bbm-to-bbm-voice-calls/

Dem talk say na over wifi oh my people, what has that got to do with telcos oh.

Remember SKYPE does this already

I have read a lot of comments and little wonder why Nigerians are not at their best??

This is a service that runs over wifi and would be great to have... na RIM fault say we no get correct internet for naija? What has carriers got to do with this? Sm1 even said "dead on arrival"....na wa o! why skype never die now?

The asperity of the nigerian mind baffles me.

If this is for you, rejoice and if it is not, parkwell... life is not always sweet on the fast lane.

sperony: I am sure Telcom cmpny will not support this to flow. if you actually check out the profit and loss implication, friends I tell you its DOA!!!
This is RIM try to introduce what has been on other phones since 2006, it is simply called VOIP,( voice over internet protocol). Its the technology that enables you make pc to pc calls on yahoo messanger, gtalk, skype etc. VOIP has been on the mobile devices for over 6yrs and Rim is just introducing it.
Note that it is only enabled on Wifi so it has nothing to do with our mobile operators as they don't give Wifi services. Other platforms enable it over data network and wifi, on data network it uses up your credit or your data volume if you subscribe for any.

Re: Blackberry Introduces BBM Voice Calls: Lets You Call BBM Contacts Free! by pak: 9:19pm On Nov 14, 2012
I have always thought about this but never had the technological or financial werewithal to pull it off.

The truth is, say what you will - This is the future of mobile telephony.

The earlier we realise that we actually are not supposed to be charged for talking !!!!
Its an anomally.

The worst that should have happened is to have a subscription based model where once I buy the phone/ and mobile line, I might only need to pay perhaps a periodic subscription fee nothing more !!!

Look at other business models like the TV or automobile. Once I buy them from the owners. I only spend to maintain the devices and in the case of TV - probably pay for cable TV subscription and Car - pay tax to govt for maintaining the road and security but I am not charged directly each time I switch on my fone or each time I drive my car.

It should be the same for phones too.

Kudos BlackBerry - maybe I might be eventually convinced to get one afterall

Its dead on Arrival cos its still very useless to the average nigerian Blackberry user who enjoys free unlimited BIS data plan.
It would have been useful to them if it was enabled on BIS as well, that way they can make unlimited calls just like they download unlimited illegal movies.

No need to resort to insult. You are actually the one who needed to read my post before posting your retort.

I don't use a BB and care less about them. What am actually sayin is that - in the very near future, we will all be making calls without necessarily being charged per call but rather on a subscription basis.

The issues of poor internet/WIFI in Nigeria are temporary issues. I work in ITand one thing I realise is that once there is a will, there is a way. Once a model is seen as viable. Technology will always find a way to align itself to suit that particular model
