Four-Week-Old Baby Bled To Death After Botched Circumcision by UNLEASHED(m): 10:07pm On Nov 27, 2012
A four-week-old baby bled to death after a botched home circumcision by a nurse, a court heard today.

Goodluck Caubergs died the day after nurse Grace Adeleye carried out the procedure without anaesthetic and using only a pair of scissors, forceps and olive oil, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The 66-year-old medic is originally from Nigeria, as is the youngster's parents, where the circumcision of newborns is the tradition for Christian families, the jury heard.

Adeleye, also a midwife, was paid £100 to do the operation as Goodluck's parents were not aware the procedure was available on the NHS.

The Royal Oldham Hospital was just a mile and a half from the family home in Chadderton, Greater Manchester, but by the time an ambulance was called the child could not be saved.

Adeleye, of Salford, Greater Manchester, denies manslaughter by gross negligence of the baby boy.

It is alleged she botched the procedure by leaving a "ragged" wound that bled, and her post-op care was also woefully inadequate.

Adrian Darbishire QC, opening the case for the prosecution, told the jury: "The allegation essentially here is that the care she provided in the course of that procedure was so bad that not only did it cause the death of that young baby wholly unnecessarily, but it amounted to gross negligence and a crime."

Mr Darbishire said circumcisions were routinely carried out in Nigeria amongst Christian families who have brought the tradition with them to the UK, and the procedure was an "ancient, well established and widespread" practice across the world.

But the court heard that up to three children a month are admitted to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital due to bleeding after home-based circumcisions - a danger the nurse should have been aware of.

Goodluck was born on 22 March 2010 in Rochdale and died on April 17, the day after the circumcision, aged 27 days old.

Adeleye was introduced to the family through a friend as she had performed many circumcisions over the years and offered her "experience and skill".

Most likely a case of hemophiliac, a bleeding disorder that affects mainly the male gender. Parents first notice this bleeding problem after circumcision when the bleeding fails to stop despite conventional hemostatic methods.

Aside other possible causes of the bleeding, stress of the 'poorly' done procedure can cause the baby to bleed to that extent.

You are right Centje. But, how can you explain "bleeding to death"? Even if there was an amputation of the penile head; the child would still have survived.
I think that blood clotting disorder should be fing.ered as the possible cause. If we probe further, we might get a history of bleeding disorder in the family.

The most annoying thing about this story is that the nurse or whatever she claimed to be actually had to cut the foreskin. That's an old, outdated procedure. Nowadays there is a procedure that does not require cutting that is used to circumcise baby boys, been in use as far back as the 70s when I was born, so my mother says, and that's how my son was circumcised.
Re: Four-Week-Old Baby Bled To Death After Botched Circumcision by Nobody: 6:06pm On Nov 28, 2012
@ACM
That's possible too,i was judging based on the 'poor' technique.
Maybe autopsy and test on the relatives can give a clue.

This is really sad..
The scissors without anaesthetic part makes me shudder....
So much pain the poor baby must have experienced...
Careless parents and careless nurse!!

This is one thing i fear. Doctors and nurses should be extremely careful when dealing with issues relating to life and health. The nurse in question is said to be experienced, having done it over the years. I see carelessness and little mistakes causiog serious problems. These people will never take it likely, especially when they now know that she is a black woman from Nigeria.

it can also be done without anaesthetic. There's a debate/research on whether to use anaesthetic or not,i don't know the conclusion tho'

Ouch...what a sad one. It must have been a painful death...and could have been prevented if the midwife did she work properly.

I think that could be a possibility but this condition would probably have been noticed much earlier prior to the procedure.

Nigerian in the news again for the wrong thing

The parents are also quite fool.ish
Why should they allow such a thing
Assuming it was not covered under NHS,there are private practitioners and certified Rabbis that carry out circumcision
Why this back room 100 pound deal from a quack that is now stuck in their throats.I blame them more.

Looking for a cheap way out,you endanger the life of a baby shocked
I bet you they wished now the baby remained an uncircumcised philistine
Re: Four-Week-Old Baby Bled To Death After Botched Circumcision by Cyberknight: 6:20pm On Nov 28, 2012
centje: what do you think is cut instead?

The foreskin isn't cut away with a knife or other implement, a ring is used to constrict it and it sloughs off. The baby suffers no pain. Very common procedure, so if you have a son, make sure that's how they circumcise him.

In most centres if not all in naija, the poor babies don't get any anaesthetic agent and they tend to do well after one or two days of transient irritability.

Tis really sad and this kind of situation should not be heard of in this present age. However it is not good to rush to conclude.

There are questions to be asked-

It is possible to bleed after circumcision in some situation; why should there be bleeding to death?

She was said to have been carrying this procedure out for decades; how many babies have bled to death or developed other complications from this poor technique of hers?

Is she licenced to do it?

Even if licenced, is she permitted to do it at home?

The technique she used, is it recognised as one of the possible methods for circumcision?

If the technique is recognised, is it still acceptable anywhere in world?

If it is acceptable, is it acceptable in the UK?
