Have you recently converted to christianity or i-slam? Are you sure you have done the right thing? Were you satisfied with the answers to the questions to asked when you were considering converting? I don't know about you, but if I was presented with an opportunity to convert to a new religion, here are are some of the questions I would like to ask the proselytiser; 1) What is the epistemic method for determining truth, knowledge or the nature of god? 2) Can these methods be validated? 3) How do we get to know god's attributes and how are we sure it is the REAL god and not some other impersonator? 4) Does person experience constitute an objective method of assessing evidence? These are the ones that have come to mind right now, but I can certainly think of more. I would like to know what pre-conversion questions you people have got to assess the validity of the religious claims of the proselytisers. ================================================================================ Some of my other threads The Dangers Of Religious Fundamentalism To Intellectualism https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=110955.msg1929006#msg1929006 Only For Those Who Know Their Bibles And Some History: Who Was Jesus? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112697.msg1954632#msg1954632 Only For Those Who Know Their Bibles: Old Testament Stories https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112679.msg1954426#msg1954426 Human Sacrifice In The Bible: Lev 27: 29 & Judges 11 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112584.msg1953340#msg1953340 Please, Please, Please: Christians - Read Read Read Your Bibles https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112578.msg1953311#msg1953311 When Was Jesus Crucified? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112557.msg1952665#msg1952665 On Conversion To A Religion (christianity Or I-slam) https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112547.msg1952353#msg1952353 Faith-healers And Tele-evangelists https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112398.msg1950528#msg1950528 Where Did Sin Originate? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112377.msg1950291#msg1950291 For The Non-beleivers Only, 1 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112262.msg1948957#msg1948957 Would Christains Be Criminals And Offenders If They Were Not Christians? https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112259.msg1948919#msg1948919 On The Authenticity Of The New Testament, Part 1 https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=112240.msg1948631#msg1948631 Has Atheism Got Principle? You guys (christians and m-uslims ) have had it easy for far too long, propagating your falsehoods to simple, vulnerable, credulous and gullible people. It is about time you are challenged by the discerning minority who can no longer stand by and see the world dragged yet again into another Dark Age. |

hi all what is the use of prooving to someone whose mind is made up on an issue? please this is what peter said 1 Pet 3:15 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: (KJV) he said reason not argue the reason of my hope. Remember Jesus Christ doesnt have to prove to the Pharisees that He resurrected. He finally said that blessed is anyone that believes even though He has not seen becos it is given to those that grace has been given to understan. for instance, i cant use scientific tools to prove love yet i know love. so i dont have to prove anything, if u believe good if you dont its upto you JESUS CHRIST IS GOD!!! |

therationa: @therationa That is my point. This question was asked and answered over 800 years old. Are you taking us back to the Dark Ages |
Re: On Conversion To A Religion (christianity Or I-slam) by olabowale(m): 5:04pm On Feb 15, 2008 |
@Therationa: Have you ever been able to proof the non existence of God, you esteemed friend? At best you are not certain that all that you see around you just happened by accident. Then the possibility that your limited knowledge of your enviroment, is a proof that you do not know everything, or do you? Then Gods nature is in what you do not know. And you do not know whats happening in the next room to you. Let me show you how poor your knowledge of yourself is: you have never seen your back, except if you set up mirrors to give you imagery of it. And then, it will be the opposite and your brain will have to adjust to it. If your knowledge about yourself is limited how then you think you can disprove the unseen? Afterall, you are not more than a semen and an egg! And truth is the absent of falsehood. And truth is always one, but falsehood can be many: each time changing to adjust to new ideas. Knowledge that is beneficial is very direct and is always complete according to the needs of the one who seeks it. 2) Can these methods be validated?Sure. If you put each to a test, with complete desire to find truth. But of course you must devorce yourself, first of all preconceived notions, that could be detrimental to your getting the truth directly. For example; when I was on the part of cerifying that God is ever existing, I first asked myself this Question: How did I come about? Then I came to the time of the first man, Adam. I dis covered that Adam did not come from Ape as the darwinist will want us to believe. I asked myself, if I were from Ape, why hasn't another Ape become a man since then? If I were not from Ape, then the whole Darwin idea is dead and I must have been created anew. Then I must have a Creator. I called mine Allah, because I am a Muslim and I believe He is One: Indivisible. 3) How do we get to know god's attributes and how are we sure it is the REAL god and not some other impersonator? One of the most important thing is His name: Allah. It is His proper name. Then He lets us know at least 99 of His attributes. One of them is Alqahr: The Irrestitable; simple means everyone need Him and He need no one. Another is that everyone will perish, including all known and unknown beings; except Him. And He is the Lord of the day of Judgement. He also says He is the only One who can protect and the only One who can punish (Both, in truth). 4) Does person experience constitute an objective method of assessing evidence? If you divest yourself from all that you have known, then you should have no problem with your heart letting you know the truth. You should try finding truth yourself. |

olabowale: Many, many many thanks Olabowale. This is how I expect to see responses to these questions. Unlike the evasion I am seeing from my Christian friends. Looks like they have something to hide. Or maybe them do not know. Let this be a lesson for those Christians out there. I shall need to time to digest your response though. Many thankx again |

therationa: This is another oft overlooked flaw . . . the propensity for dishonesty from wannabe atheists. I doubt that these "discerning minority" are afraid of us dragging them to the dark age . . . i think the real problem is the spiritual war that rages in their restless souls. Religion, especially christianity, has been so relegated to the background of mainstream society that it is laughable that ur main fear is that christians are looking for the nearest opportunity to drag u to the dark ages. The world is more likely to experience WWIII over oil resources than to fear the dark ages. Therationalist pls face the truth . . . u people are too afraid that God indeed may exist that you are struggling so desperately to force the rest of us to toe ur line of reasoning. A lot of people have focused solely on religious fundamentalism but are ignoring an equally if not more potent danger, that of areligious fundamentalism . . . the gradual rise of a powerful group of people whose sole goal is to wipe out all traces of religion from the public sphere. They have replaced AD, BC with CE and BCE (2 ambigous terms that have no coherent meaning except to wipe out christian influence from public consciousness), they have scrubbed the Lord's prayer from public circles, it is becoming an offence to teach creationism in school . . . pretty soon it will become illegal to own a bible. These from the hypocrites who pretend to be afraid that we are taking them back to the dark ages. |
