I have a website that is pretty popular here in Nigeria in .com version but someone just bought the .net, .ws and .mobi version of it... in probably 2 years time, my site will go global and i do not want someone to own a separate version of my site or sell it to competitors.
i have a brand name already and this troll may benefit or frustrate my effort sooner or later

Do i make an offer to buy the site now or i should just wait?

You would probably be smoking out over $7000 to acquire .net, .mobi and .org(if registered).... Sorry bro/sis

You don't have to worry, trust me you won't even need it. Do you know that techcrunch.net exist aside AOL's .com? but who cares? NOBODY!

I tell will you from my personal experience, I wasted time and money to ensure that i have every domain aimtech realated. From aimtechng.com to aimtechnigeria.com and even all the .nets' - How has it helped me in any way? - This is five years ago and business has not increased or decreased because of those names.

One advice bro, just keep your head straight and your game tight, just keep bowling!

the problem is that if you dont but it and the brand name becomes popular, then the owner can capitalize on that and launch a rival product riding on your back or even competing directly with you.

Imagine nairaland.com as a forum and Nairaland. net as a porn site doesn't seem right

Get, ur site professional looking, with logo and no private who.is

you can check the net, apply for rights. As long as its a .net,.org,.com its usa jurisdiction. If ur really sucessful with the branding, u can apply fr a cease and decist.

This is one of challenges perfectionist like us face. The issue here is that there are hundreds of extensions out there, where would you start?
even big and popular brands still have many extensions unregistered.
All you need to do having gotten your .COM just have the name trademarked in Nigeria and put trademark sign(R) after it anytime you use it to communicate.
Meanwhile use (TM) in it now any where it appears.
