A poultry farmer, Mr Wale Ojo, has appealed to the Federal Government to assist poultry farmers in stemming bird mortality rate during the dry season.

Ojo, the Chief Executive Officer of Adewale Nigeria Limited, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that farmers often lose many birds during the intense heat.

“The Federal Government should come to our aid in this heat period so as to help reduce birds’ mortality rate.

“The major problem of poultry farmers is feeding and until feeding is subsidised, it will be difficult for farmers to increase production.

“Many farmers are leaving the business because of high cost of poultry feeds. The Federal Government has not given us enough attention,’’ he said.

Ojo also complained that banks were not giving credit facilities to farmers, leaving most of them to source for fund on their own.

He suggested that government could assist by buying off the birds from the farmers to encourage them to increase their production.

According to him, in other countries, farmers are given needed assistance to produce maximally but in this country, we are left on our own.

“The basic facilities are not available so most farmers lose millions of naira on daily basis and this is forcing them out of business.’’

He urge the Federal Government to give more attention to poultry farmers to enable them contribute to the nation’s economy.
