I need to know more on this issue. I know a friend in school in the US for graduate studies, and he says he didn't have to pay any fees before leaving Nigeria. Instead he depends on stipends given by his dept. as well as money he earns by working.

Is this really a most feasible idea? What about the UK? Can this also work. What are the consequences, or any disadvantages, or any reasonable advice I should have.

I intend to pursue a PG in either UK or the US next year.

Hey Rare,
I am not the most knowledgeable person on this subject but this is what i know. In the US if your GPA as an undergrad was really good and you do the GRE's and score really high in them as well.

Depending on your major they have Graduate assistanships and fellowships available, these are programs that pay for your studies while you go to school.  You can also be a teacher's assistant and get like half of your tuition paid for.

You can get more of this information online, by searching for it by the schools you are interested in or you can just google, fellowships and assistanship programs for your major and which colleges participates in them. Hope this helped. Good luck in your endeavors.

Hi Rare,

Yes there are people who go to school in the US without paying directly out of pocket. However, it depends on the school, as well as your course. If you do an MBA in the US at a top 20 school, chances are you will either get a full scholarship or a loan, but you have to score in the 650-750 range in your GMAT. The same goes for a masters program in a good school. I did an MBA myself and got a full scholarship - i only had to take care of my living expenses while i was in school. Unfortunately in the UK, these kinds of opportunities are much rarer, but are available nontheless. I run a website where i give advice to Nigerians who want to study in the US, you can check it out. The URL is www.usastudyinfo.com.

Yeah rare,

i am one of those on the "too free to be true" phd programs in the US. I have been here more than a yr and the only thing i've ever had to pay out of pocket was my one way flight ticket to the US. Everything from books to living expenses to tuition is paid for by ny school. all i do is eat, sleep and read!
They actually exist, it depends on the school, your GRE or GMAT scores, your discipline and your undergrad scores. If they are very good, you've got very bright chances. Opportunities are very rare in the UK so i advice u try the US especially if you had good school and test scores!

Welcome aboard the new mode of free education! grin
